Run a chain through the wheel then around the axle. Usually can do that on both sides to slow them down more. Don't use one chain for both. Use two separate chains and locks.

Great video, thanks mate! I've been running a heavy duty steel cable through my wheel and then through a propane bottle, padlocked. Not impossible to steal, but like you said, slows them down and makes a lot of noise. Matter of fact, I need to go do that after dinner. With a beer.
You could also setup a trail cam in a way that the thief won’t see it, watching your trailer so if someone messes or does steal the trailer you have video of the person or persons and hopefully a license plate to give to the police.
brian olson UA-cam is full of “surveillance” videos where you can’t read the license plates or the thieves wears a hoody. In most cities cops won’t even bother to look at videos for thefts
These are great videos. I own a home but am seriously thinking of going off the grid and mobile. Your videos are a godsend and watching them is a great education on how to do it right.
I had my Popup camper stolen years ago. The hitch was locked, so they used the chains. I like your idea about making the chains removable! I am using the same wheel lock you are already.
Dan Lux True, but that draws attention. My camper was stolen during the day with neighbors watching. The thieves were bold enough to wave, neighbors assumed everything must be okay. Many trailer thefts are done by opportunists. They don’t want to work for it. You can read my story here, and the update at the bottom of the page where someone tried to steal my replacement camper. 2manytoyz.com/stolen.html

Someone stole my trailer right from my own property! I had a ball lock on but it didn't stop them. Thanks for the other tips. Sure wish I had known these things before hand. I traveled all over the US and was devastated when my little home was taken from me!
Sorry to hear that Toni. There's only so many things we can do to protect our property. I insured my trailer, but I had to switch companies to do it. Some won't insure a cargo trailer.
Ye my dads $30,000 trailer got taken and it pisses me off someone could get away from them. If we have the truck on video at night what’s the probability of finding it?
I had the brilliant idea a couple of years ago to run a chain thru the wheel around the axle, pretty much hidden from view all tucked up under the trailer. Neat idea except for the two times I was in a hurry and forgot I had the chain on. And of course, I couldn't see it to remind me. Got over a block one time before I wondered what that weird noise was.
Cable strung throughout wheels, (both), over springs is what I have seen at gem and mineral shows. Thieves seem to target trailers frequently at the shows.
cables don't offer much protection. If it's a VERY heavy cable, it'll stop those $25 hardware store variety of cable cutter but then the cable becomes difficult to manage. if the thief has time, something like side cutters will work through any cable in no time. For that idea, the best would be a heavy boron security chain or a pewag chain but they are very expensive and heavy. ..and then your weak spot will be the lock so you'll need a mega lock for that too which will be another $100+. I suppose it's nothing if you're protecting a $100K trailer full of your belongings.
Hey guys awesome video! My Pa always said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cures! Seems like a great deterrent. I'm glad it worked out ok... Thanks for sharing! Have a blessed one!

Great video......never really thought about some of what you covered. I have seen some trailer owners with tandems is put a chain thru both tires on one side....and/ or lock it to a tree or something like that.
The solution is to employ an old rancher trick. When a rancher had a coyote trying to work his livestock he would shoot it and throw the carcass over the fence as a warning to other coyotes. If society would implement such a system for thieves, thievery would quickly go down.
Good suggestions. I avoid WalMart like the plague in part because so many low lives hang out there. Most of the scary camping stories I've heard have come from there. Glad you got back in time and found simple yet effective deterrents. Great channel name!
I have cargo trailers that I leave on job sites for weeks at a time. I run harden chains through my tires around the spring. On my tandem trailer through both tires and around the spring. I place the lock (NOW) where it is hard to get to with a hammer or cutters (Behind the tire under the trailer) Once on my flatbed I did not have but one chain and lock with me so I pop off the hubcap and took the nut off the two wheels on the right side. Yep they beat the lock off however about 2 AM I was call by the city police asking if I was missing a trailer. They got it out of the job site and in the street before the wheels fell off. Cost me near $200 wrecker fee however I still had my trailer and the equipment on it With a 18V grinderthat are around now days; any lock will be beaten. I now have GPS trackers on all my trailers as well

I enjoy your videos, I am handy capped and cannot travel so am glad you take me along through your videos. I am a retired mechanic. Doesn't matter what or how a trailer is secured included chained to a tree, it can be gone in 5 minutes or less. Difference here with me I will not tell anyone how that is done. Your multiple locking and securing is preventing most thieves to keep going to find something easier. Very good advice you are giving. thank you for your videos!
Smart move I went to Philadelphia with my trailer in that exactly what I did I bought a boot locking lug nut for the tires I like the idea he mobile boat safety chain that will be my next step thank you 🙏...👍👍
Great ideas! Like you said, every one of the theft deterrent devices you installed takes more time to defeat. Most thieves don't want to spend a lot of time cutting items off a trailer. A simple car alarm with a motion sensor, added door contacts powered by a battery inside with a loud horn on the roof will deter all but the most determined criminals. There are even tracking devices that don't cost an arm and a leg. There is always a crook waiting for an opportunity. Great video.
I hadn't thought about those types of deterrence like the tire boot and locking lug nuts. Both are good ideas. I can't cut the chains off but I can wrap them around and put a lock on them. You gave me some great ideas! Thanks👍
This is the first guy I have seen on UA-cam that has used a grinder with a guard and proper eye protection. Great video and good information too. A lot of people can learn a lot from this not just about securing a trailer
That special tool needed to remove those gorilla lugs is called vicegrips. Also, the ball lock is only as strong as the lip around the ball receiver on the tongue. I've had mine removed on my boat either as a sport or maybe they were scared away by something else. ..probably the size of the boat. I've had and still have a set of the gorilla lugs on my wheels. They're the kind where every lug nut is a keyed lug nut. I'm told that they can be removed with vicegrips and a solution of ATF n acetone as a penetrating oil ..or heat n candle wax ...and the determination of a dirty thief.. Thanks for the tip about removing the safety chain. I've often wondered about it. When its hooked up to my truck, I use pad locks as the links
*Al good ideas, another thing is putting a GPS tracker on the trailer too they aren't as expensive as some of your deturants and there is always an indication on the software as to where the trailer is actually at once it's been taken*
Out here in the western states you would need one that uses gps and not cell service. I think they're more costly with a monthly subscription. Worth looking into though. Thanks for watching!
I've been ripped off B4. Not a good feeling. Anyway, I've made some changes to my trailers also. But at the end of ur video I noticed that you had a regular padlock on ur back door/ramp... BAD bad idea. Change it out to what some call a ' puck ' like a hockey puck. It covers the latch PLUS the shackle cannot be accessed. Just a added "peace"of mind !!! 🤗😉☺️
Popping a lock , once you get shown how, is just as fast as using a key. You grab the body with channel locks, hit the body on the side with a hammer while pulling and ...it's open. Sorry but it's that easy to defeat most padlocks. Even the "good" locks can be picked really fast. UA-cam educated me. If thieves really want something a padlock is just a minor slowdown. You gotta be redundant with locks locking locks.
I hunt in arkansas and camp at a very remote wma. Nearest light is 3 miles away. Think swamp. I have to lock up the boat like always. The engine is locked on with a cable. A good bike lock... the fort Knox u shaped ones. That will keep your trailer where you left it. One on each wheel locking rim to frame. My motor would be gone 3 times by now if it wasn't locked and bolted onto the boat.
Good ideas. And timely. The boot seems like a real deterrent. But, dang that's a lot of screwing around and weight. I do the hitch lock and I sometimes set up a trail camera. I'll do some more research on a GPS tracker device that can be hidden in the trailer. Thanks for the heads-up.
Put a motion censor alarm that can only be turned off from the inside with it own power supply loud speaker so people around know something is going on and hooked up to your cell phone to notify you when and if moved where it is...

Thanks very much; I appreciate the information. I am thinking about converting a cargo trailer to a camper, and I will consider the safety/anti-theft devices you showed when I build it. Thanks, again.
Great video! Unfortunately, some towns, like Calgary, Alberta have shady tow operators drumming up business and running a chop shop operation and it's perfectly legal. Just give them an excuse. I painted mine PINK. It's less desirable.
Miss Adventures, I agree with you on painting the trailer some color that is distinctive and not apealing to most. It's easier to steal a white trailer and hide it than a pink trailer. Thank you for your post.
Great video... a 100 videos ago I saw a custom anti-theft tongue. The tongue part where the bulldog hitch is was removable leaving a square female to insert the tongue away. I thought it was genius. Can't find it again so I'll have one built I think.
Loosen ALL lug nuts (very wobbly trailer) or remove all, but the 1 locking lug nuts... if they destroy it... not going more than 10’ ...in addition to other methods.
locking lugnuts don't work. none of them. if they stick out enough, they grab them with vise grips or pipe wrench (look around now as people have them on their steel winter rims, the "security" nuts that need a unique tool are 100% sticking out in front of the rim face, availble to turn with anything that'll grab a round object...thanks. As for the other ones installed recessed pockets in the rim, thieves get any socket that's similar in diameter but a tiny bit smaller. hammer it over and onto the lock nut. done, the points and sides of the socket will grab the nut enough to turn it off. takes seconds.
littlegoobie I am in yur corner... EVERYTHING can be defeated... proven. What I promote is discouraging... layering levels of prevention... Make them think out loud... “Now what ?” as they defeat 1 level, and now have to beat ANOTHER level...lol & move on to an easier, quieter to defeat victim. NO, 1 secure method is on the exists... ... but my .45 works... if awoken inside ! 🙀
yeah, that's the way to go. You should secure items using several different techniques where each method requires a different set of tools to defeat. But, like i said in another comment, if the thief is another mobile home person, chances are they have just about every power tool and hand tool with them. you never know what'll break when you're 300 miles from the next town. For them, all you can do is remove key pieces like the wheels, or hitch. or have the biggest trailer on the road and do all your travelling in mountainous terrains where only the biggest 450/550 pickup can move it. ...and then pull it on a gooseneck because not many seem to have them over standard 5th wheel hitches.
The trailer is manufactured by Stealth and I'm happy with the quality. There's nothing too fancy on the inside because sometimes I bring my ATV along and it just fits, but some of my videos show what's there. Try watching the one about the hula hoop shower.

BIG JOE, my particular trailer is only a 6x10 and is all aluminum, so it's very light. I suggest stronger links that are closed (shackles) and rated for the strength of the chain you are using. Thanks for watching!
I like your ideas. In addition to them, you could plant an "Arlo Go" camera, or two, on magnetic bases. They send instant notifications with images and video to your mobile phone and the very presence of them should make a thief thief think again.
Any one in Australia - you cant do the chain mod the video shows as it is illegal, and frankly, pointless. Anyone that is going to chain tow your rig is going to have a length of chain and a pair of D shackles and just bypass that idea altogether. This is an issue trailer boat and caravan owners have grappled with for years. The 'boot' and security wheel nuts works well. So much so the thieves are more likely to take anything out side the rig (generators, boxes, fuel cans, solar panels, LPG cylinders etc, even water filters! before taking the rig itself .
To the point, down to earth, concise, no games, no hype, and most of all a gentleman, with a beautiful wife.......now subbed and supportive...........STA
what i have done for all of my trailers including a 30' enclosed gooseneck. Yes using a device to cover or block the tongue is a must , a wheel lock is a plus as long as you do use the locking nuts. but heres where the elegance comes in. as long as your trailer has electric brakes.... inside the trailer where thieves cant get to it attach a car alarm to a house battery and tie the outputs to the trailer running lights so that the lights will flash if activated, place the siren in a hard to access location under the trailer, some simple pin switches on the doors to activate the alarm should a door be opened, as it has a tilt and motion sensor it will alarm is someone tries to break in or tow the trailer. When the alarm goes off assuming that you properly chose an alarm with an triggered output send the signal to a relay and then the relay to the electric brake wiring under the trailer in a non obvious tap. This will cause the wheels to lock up if the alarm is activated making the trailer nearly impossible to tow. no its not going to prevent the truly determined from getting your trailer or its contents, but it does draw attention to a thief (which they dont want) it is a great $300 insurance plan and my alarm has a transmitter and receiver so up to a mile away i will know if my alarm is triggered.
@@gonagain That is a good idea and to add to this create a simple circuit that closes a relay and supplies power to lock up the trailer brakes when the alarm is triggered So it cant be moved easily.
Most anti-left lugnuts can be removed (and in fact, often are, if you take your car/trailer into a tire service shop and forget to give them the key) by driving a heavy impact socket down over it. Takes two minutes, and it's gone.
You cab get 'hardened' wheel nuts that will not deform when the impact socket ( actually, any old socket will do ) is punched over the wheel nuts. The only way to get them off if the keyed socket is lost is to weld a normal nut over the hardened nut, or grind the hardened nut off. One boat owner I know has actually welded his wheels to the axle hub, but left the wheel nuts in place. Many marks and stolen wheel nuts show that a few attempts have been made to steal the boat. A bit of pain to change wheels if you cop a flat, but the reality is he has never had a trailer flat, and he has to change his wheels and hub every 5 years or so due to corrosion anyway.
@@ronpowell2373 nah we can still drive a 12 point socket over those "extra hardened" ones and they come off. We need to atleast once a week with these fools forgetting their keys

Wow you really covered all the bases. I hadn't even thought of some of those workarounds. Thank you very much for all the insights.
Great video. Made me think that I need better protection on my trailers.
I'm sorry to hear that you guys had to experience that situation, I hate thieves & that they take from hard vvorking people. TY for shovving the extra precautions that can be taken to ensure the trailers security as all I knevv of vvas the ball lock . I vvish you both many years of safe & fun travelling together .

And a motion detector to sound off if someone moves the trailer, and one that notifies you of the movement.
Lary Mayotte YES, and a LoJack for every state communication
Great video, thanks mate! I've been running a heavy duty steel cable through my wheel and then through a propane bottle, padlocked. Not impossible to steal, but like you said, slows them down and makes a lot of noise. Matter of fact, I need to go do that after dinner. With a beer.
It's beer time here too! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Bernie. I did an update to that video and you can see it here if you like: ua-cam.com/video/3tZNWzdYe34/v-deo.html
I had my Popup camper stolen years ago. The hitch was locked, so they used the chains. I like your idea about making the chains removable! I am using the same wheel lock you are already.
Those tongue locks are worthless. Cheap metal you can hit with a hammer and break, or shim it open.
ua-cam.com/video/FsanXdHX5c0/v-deo.html
Padlock can be cut in no time with a cordless grinder too.
Good video and lots a great tips! I’m with you on theft deterrence. It’s all about making it take more time and noise than it’s worth😀👍. I just finished making a coupler/hitch lock for mine and I’ve got a chain through one wheel and around the axle. As well as removable chains. But I still want to add a tire boot and maybe a tracker too. How do you like that boot?
It's fine as a deterrent, just buy the best one that you can and the best anti theft lug nuts to go along with it. Thanks for watching!
Was just gonna ask the same question!! Thank U!! We have 36' Toyhauler.....ALOT To move Anyway But all that we can do to make it more difficult.....What is the Price of the Boots approx?? 🤗
The idea of a tracker sounds very encouraging and smart!!!👍WISE YOU ARE!!!
I hope you're able to catch them.
Awww that sucks 😢
I had the brilliant idea a couple of years ago to run a chain thru the wheel around the axle, pretty much hidden from view all tucked up under the trailer. Neat idea except for the two times I was in a hurry and forgot I had the chain on. And of course, I couldn't see it to remind me. Got over a block one time before I wondered what that weird noise was.
Oh no! I'm betting you won't do that again.
Cable strung throughout wheels, (both), over springs is what I have seen at gem and mineral shows.
Thieves seem to target trailers frequently at the shows.
They think there's tools inside. Thanks for watching!
cables don't offer much protection.
You might want to consider replacing that cheap brass lock you with a more high security lock
Great Ideas. Here's one more. A cable lock through the hole in wheel and around leaf spring.
Hey guys awesome video! My Pa always said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cures! Seems like a great deterrent. I'm glad it worked out ok... Thanks for sharing! Have a blessed one!

And the really sad part is, the criminal has more rights than the victim.

Too many years of not hitting criminals in the head with a hammer until you see gray matter....
The solution is to employ an old rancher trick. When a rancher had a coyote trying to work his livestock he would shoot it and throw the carcass over the fence as a warning to other coyotes. If society would implement such a system for thieves, thievery would quickly go down.
Yeah but look at the lengths thieves go to steal stuff though..

Great advice tips. Thanks for this video. I will share it with all of my trailer friends and put it on our forum.

Good suggestions. I avoid WalMart like the plague in part because so many low lives hang out there. Most of the scary camping stories I've heard have come from there. Glad you got back in time and found simple yet effective deterrents. Great channel name!
It's a known hang out for low life people and why aren't the authorities doing something about it by now!!
I have a ct I am now building and you raised a damn important issue I have not been thinking about. Thank you so much for posting this information!!!!
I have cargo trailers that I leave on job sites for weeks at a time. I run harden chains through my tires around the spring. On my tandem trailer through both tires and around the spring. I place the lock (NOW) where it is hard to get to with a hammer or cutters (Behind the tire under the trailer)
Once on my flatbed I did not have but one chain and lock with me so I pop off the hubcap and took the nut off the two wheels on the right side. Yep they beat the lock off however about 2 AM I was call by the city police asking if I was missing a trailer. They got it out of the job site and in the street before the wheels fell off. Cost me near $200 wrecker fee however I still had my trailer and the equipment on it
With a 18V grinderthat are around now days; any lock will be beaten. I now have GPS trackers on all my trailers as well
gordless grinder ... it's gone
Hidden security cameras, a police force that actually cares and constantly patrolling, very strick penalties for doing crime.

LOL, removing the lug nuts? Genius! As long as you're not moving it...
A trailer is well over the levels for petty theft, and it is a vehicle... Thing is, if the police will actually follow up.
@@buslady6695 Most police are just like everyone else, they really don't give a crap about what bothers someone else, only what bothers them. We the good people must see and demand serious enforcement from a much better upcoming government. On another issue, I can't stand it when people who harbor dogs practically try to push their dogs on me or other people and don't give a damn about the leash law. Even a dog on a leash can be very threatening and dangerous. You think anyone gives a crap? I don't believe in FORCING your pet on other people.
All we can do is slow them down, hopefully they will find it too much trouble and move on. Thanks, James.
Great ideas that would work! Thanks udavidism.
I hadn't thought about those types of deterrence like the tire boot and locking lug nuts. Both are good ideas. I can't cut the chains off but I can wrap them around and put a lock on them. You gave me some great ideas! Thanks👍

You're welcome Jack. Just make sure that the fittings you use match the strength of the chain.

BUT it can be picked.
It can be cut just takes longer.
@@nathandean1687 Only if you buy a shitty lock like MasterLock. An Abus disc detainer lock is unpickable by anyone but an expert lockpicker...
Good ideas. And timely. The boot seems like a real deterrent. But, dang that's a lot of screwing around and weight. I do the hitch lock and I sometimes set up a trail camera. I'll do some more research on a GPS tracker device that can be hidden in the trailer. Thanks for the heads-up.
Hi Raven, the boot is actually not very heavy. I have it on my trailer even when it's in my driveway.
Put a motion censor alarm that can only be turned off from the inside with it own power supply loud speaker so people around know something is going on and hooked up to your cell phone to notify you when and if moved where it is...
If you also want to you can put on a pod on the trailer anywhere and if it is stolen it will report the position via GPS and a radio signal.

Loosen ALL lug nuts (very wobbly trailer) or remove all, but the 1 locking lug nuts... if they destroy it... not going more than 10’ ...in addition to other methods.

BudgetTravelGuy lol...tie a string on yur finger to remember... but me... would get peeved at the string....lmao
locking lugnuts don't work. none of them. if they stick out enough, they grab them with vise grips or pipe wrench (look around now as people have them on their steel winter rims, the "security" nuts that need a unique tool are 100% sticking out in front of the rim face, availble to turn with anything that'll grab a round object...thanks.
Make them

ANOTHER level...lol & move on to an easier, quieter to defeat victim.
Well done by making yourself a harder target. Its all about(smash & grab) time and you don't give the perps what they need.. Great job!

Crikey use the Mel Gibson trick and hook up some TNT to it. Problem solved mate.

Thank you, we appreciate your subbing and kind words.
what i have done for all of my trailers including a 30' enclosed gooseneck.
This is really great info!!! Thanks for sharing.
