This time of year I wear my blaze orange vest when I’m in the hills.
Beautiful area and boy did I get excited when I saw those elk tracks! I was actually a bit surprised that it was elk but knew for sure it was a big mule deer at the very least. Love to hear those bulls bugle! Glad you two are having fun in the sun. We had a skiff of snow in the Flathead today and it looks and feels like there's more to come tonight 🥶
It's been super windy here which is okay since it removes the leaves out of the yard. Looks like winter is here.... It was surprising to us too, to see all that elk sign and Linda is sure the ones she saw were cow elk.

Rick & Linda, When I saw that "TRACK", I could tell by the depth, that "YOU" had just startled it and it "dug in", starting a sprint to put distance between you and it!
As for the "E.T.Telephone Pole" or the "Electrical Power Pole" IDK ... I kinda see a MONUMENT to our "LORD JESUS"(maybe left by "E.T.")

How do you find your way back to camper?
We have a Garmin InReach along with us that has our camper as a way point. Also, on most of the hikes we aren't going far and we keep tabs of where we are with our compass and landmarks.
Boy you really have an adventurous Spirit you have gone where I don't think I would have gone.. do you have a satellite beacon should something happen in these very remote places? And how about a Garmin personal hiking GPS device do you carry one? Or what about a medical emergency.. do you check your cell signal before heading out?
We seldom have cell signal where we go, but we do carry a Garmin InReach satellite communicator.
Great video. There is all kinds of artifacts like that post out in the wilderness. Could of been the last pole of an electric line running too a now gone homestead or mine workings. Time has a way of eroding roads and buildings and mines. Back on 50's and 60's this country was doing much better and the Government Agencies had ways of wasting money even back then. They put up nesting sites and perches for the Birds of prey so they could set up really high and look for rodents. Was it a waste? Maybe not but I bet it was way overpriced.

There is a lot of history to be found out there amongst the pinions, junipers and the sagebrush. Mystery abounds and challenges the imagination with each new discovery. The beauty of the desert is in the eye of the beholder. Beyond the view which is awesome, there are the unmistakable odors from nature which are greatly enhanced by a passing visitor or a passing storm. Rick & Linda are living a life which is the envy of those who cannot. Thank you so much for sharing your travels.

POSTED sign Call the County Sherriff and ask if you should turn around. That is what I do.
No cell service there, but that's a good idea. With no gate and no sign of other people having turned around, I think the road itself may have been county, but I couldn't be sure.
You both had a great hike, exercise. No treasure, some days all like that. Enjoying the scenery.

I think I would’ve gotten out the drone and looked up and around the hill. I would also use that at the no trespassing signs to see how far that was to the road.😮🤔🤔👍💚
I got my DJI Mini 4 Pro a few days after that and I did start using it to check out side roads without having to drive up them. Super easy and convenient!

Maybe, but no other poles and no sign a building having ever been in the area. Usually we find old cans, glass, nails or something.
Hello, nice adventure, just think of what one could explore on a small motorcycle. My cargo trailer is basic, I can and do haul my duel sport in, and then once I get to my destination the trailer serves me as a place to bed down, I look at it like a tent, or a poor Mans Toy hauler.
This way I can keep my home and still enjoy the outdoors even more than the folks that have a $80,000 toy hauler, because for one I can go places with my cargo trailer they can not, and two I am not worried about a few scratches from tree branches. A bit more Bear proof than a tent and i can lock it up when I am off riding around on the bike to find a nice spot to have lunch and make a few contacts using morse code on the Short Wave set.
Rick , You and Linda over the years have showed us how to enjoy the Great Outdoors in comfort without throwing money away foolishley. THANK YOU!
You have a great set up! I've been looking at dual sport motorcycles lately and drool over them.
@@gonagain The duel sports are expencive and the seat height is redicules. The Yamaha XT250 , which I have now is 32 inches, and I can place both feet on the ground, but it is somewhat a strech. They sell lowering links to drop the back of the bike down 2 inches which I plan to do. For mounting and dismounting it is much easier to mount it like you do a horse, use the foot peg like a sturip.
But much more comfortable to ride than my CT90, and has ample power and I got 80 mpg on my first tank, I have put almost 300 miles on it so far, about half road and half dirt.

Loved your video. I really enjoy your adventures. I was driving north on 93 in Nevada heading home to Idaho about 10 o'clock at night and a huge bull elk stepped out in front of me on the highway as I was going 70. Fortunately, he stepped out of the way just in time for me to miss him. That's a lonely highway, I won't travel it again after dark.
We try not to travel at night because of the animals on the road, especially in Montana where people have collided with deer, elk, bear and moose.
Old telegraph pole?? I enjoyed your video once again. I don't know why, but I got a little creeped out for you, Rick, as you neared your turn around point on your hike up. I kept thinking mountain lion. Be careful.

My dad once came across a vertical mine shaft in the middle of sagebrush that wasn't covered. He mentioned it could have been his end; you are savvy to be careful and aware of your surroundings in wild places. The deer were most likely mulies in that area.
We've seen holes like that! No covering or warning except for the dirt piles in the area.
David Paulides has a series called missing 411, it spooked me out of my solo hunting trips and adventures. It came to mind as you pointed out the spooky lonely power pole.

Love your videos, I live in the high mountains in northern California. In my area we have the largest ponderosa pine , 10 ft wide , in the States, not the tallest. Been there many times. As for that funky pole you came across, how strange. Safe travels. Rhonda

Love the elk bugling @14:25. What a great adventure. I think the pole could be a remnant of a makeshift camp. Possibly a makeshift house/tent pole, unless it was really tall. Then maybe an identifier pole, flagpole. That is the beauty of it. It makes you imagine. Imagination has no age - Walt Disney.

That private property sign's back was to the range. I think had the road been private the sign would have been right next to the road and faced to road traffic. And it would have said No Trespassing, making clear the owner's intent. Could well be a situation where the road is public and the land surrounding it private. I would have stopped and walked the road out a ways to look for any signs of private ownership of the road. None seen, I would have proceeded. Had the sheriff been called you could have showed him the sign and the ambiguous nature of the situation. He would have checked you out and had you not been wanted ax murderers or terrorists, he would have let you go. Deputies have more important things to do than cuff and stuff senior citizens!
Was there an insulator on that pole? Good for electricity you know... Perhaps the pole is a locator for an old bank robber stash from Virginia city or Dodge city... Never did trust those do gooder Cartwrights.

Linda is correct, that pole is alien! Where is your drone? There is an elk feeding place near the intersection of Hwy 410 and US 12 NW of Yakima, WA. Hundreds of elk can be seen. Its been years since I was there but I assume they still feed. I have a video showing them being fed.
Didn't know that they did that. In MT, they've put out feed and water for the antelope in times of severe drought. The elk in that area had lots of irrigated fields to munch away in.

I stumbled across your channel and fell into obsession, not only are you covering places I have visited or lived, traveling on a budget (underrated), camping product reviews, safety tips, but most of all, I appreciate your western-American charm and unassuming personalities and the way you respectfully interact with one another. I've been recommending your channel to European channel communities, mostly because they speak of camping and traveling the U.S. but seem unaware of the dangers & expanse of the U.S. and they seem to absolutely misunderstand gun-culture.

I haven’t watched this one yet but I was watching one you did six months ago. In that video you talked about stopping for coffee. I always have bad luck with that. So, I started to use my Jackery and a coffee maker and make it in the truck. It helps if you have a partner that can hold things steady while still driving. It seems to work great. Plus you can stop if you don’t want to be driving. But what’s nice is you don’t have to setup in the camper. You can do it in your vehicle. Especially if you have a Keurig. But does work with any small coffee maker.
That's great! We have a rice cooker that will work as we drive although we've never used it while driving. Thanks for sharing.
That last story I posted about the stow away cat during that trip when my hunting buddy and I camped at the first spot on the east side of Sheephole Valley in CA we spotted a strange thing sticking up out of the desert. When we did our evening hike up the ravine we camped in the road we were hiking followed the ravine east all the way up to a pass in the hills then dropped down into a huge valley of just miles of wasteland desert with the Calumet mountains on the other side of way east of there then just ended below the pass. We saw something sticking up out of the desert several miles out there which looked like a lone telephone pole out in the middle of nowhere. The sun was going down so we didn't have time to investigate plus we had a cat in tow and were basically there to hunt rabbits.
Some months later me and another buddy a former Marine whom I had served with and had camped with in that area before went out there again this time with no cat hiding in my camper. We usually camped on the west side of the dry lakebed but he wanted to see the new spot me and my other buddy had found. My Marine Corps buddy is more nerdy, likes to hike and check out weird stuff. I told him about the weird pole we had seen in the distance so the next morning after our overnight camp we suited up in our deuce gear with our AR-15s of course and headed out. Once we got to the pass he had some expensive binoculars and yeah this thing looked weird. Sort of like a telephone pole and sort of not so we couldn't identify it at that distance. We took a compass bearing on it, wrote it down and headed out to it. As we got closer to it looked weirder and weirder. We got concerned a bit as we got real close to it to the point we took intervals and made an echelon right maneuver on final approach because it was now looking like some kind of exhaust pipe for an underground installation. When we got to it we found that it was a big bridge pilon made of cold rolled steel sheets that were welded together into a cylinder. It was about 3 feet in diameter and sticking up out of the ground about 20 feet. The top of it was cut at an angle like a hypodermic needle with a small square cut out of the tip most likely so a hoist hook could be attached. There was also a horizontal half moon notch cut out of the side of it about 3 feet off of the ground. There were no roads out there or any evidence of a trail made by a big tow boom truck in recent history either. WTF? We figured it was most likely put out there by the Army Corps of Engineers back in the day when that area was Patton's proving ground for a landmark but it had to be a real pain in the ass to get it out there. We looked around for a Army Corps of Engineers benchmark which was common for them to install at other landmarks we had found on other hikes but there was none.
After we got back to camp I noticed I had lost my knife sometime during the hike which pissed me off. My rifle sling most likely opened the holster and it fell out somewhere. We didn't go back and I considered it just gone.
The next weekend that was my regularly scheduled end of the month overnight weekend campout with my other buddy Ron. He was the dad of my hunting buddy in the first story and kind of my honorary dad I never had too. We had several secrete hidey holes within an hour and a half drive of Orange County that we usually camped in. He wasn't into hiking or hunting but liked to load his Chevy monster 4WD with everything including a basin to use as the kitchen sink. Generator, stereo, TV, VCR and the works. We would go out set up everything and him being an old 60's former hippy dude we would trip on acid, drink booze, jam out to techno, old school 60's rock, modern blues then watch goofy movies as we came down the rest of the night as well as eat all kinds of good munchies and chow all night. I told him about that spot and the needle as me and my other buddy had named it. The Hale Bop comet was also going to be on it's closest approach that weekend and that spot had really dark clear skies at night VS our usual spots so we decided to go out there for the night and check out the comet.
In the morning with me still tripping a little bit I decided to retrace my steps out to the needle to see if I could find my knife. I told Ron where I would be going and pinpointed the spot and path on the map just in case I got hurt or something since he wasn't into hiking. I was hoping to find my knife somewhere early in the hike since my footprints from the previous weekend were still clearly visible but it didn't happen. I hiked all the way to the needle with no luck.
While I was there though the wind started whistling through the needle and it was making a real low moaning sound like it was chanting ohhhmmm, ohhhmmm every time a gust hit it just right. No, it wasn't the L that shit had worn completely off by then. That got me wondering if maybe some trippy hippy types had put that thing out there back in the day as a weird piece of audio art to trip out on? I was now naming it the flute. It looked like a flute and played like a flute just at a way lower frequency.
The wind was starting to get nasty, visibility was decreasing and my tracks were getting blown away. I had my notebook with my compass bearing and my compass with me. Half way back to the pass visibility had gotten so bad I had to land nav with my compass since missing that pass would make for a nasty scramble over the hills and monzonite quartz formations to work my way back to camp. My compass skills were good though and I hit the pass dead on. I went back to camp, helped Ron load up and we went home. That area was later added to BLM's wilderness protection so now it is basically off limits unless you want to risk dying trying to hike out there from the 62. No motor vehicles allowed anymore.
A long but hopefully an interesting story. You can find all kinds of weird stuff in the desert. Particularly that area from Yucca Valley all the way to the AZ border.

No you check to confirm it’s a forest service road and continue. It probably is because there is no gate. If they had the legal ability to deny access they would have put up a gate.
This was BLM land. You are probably correct, but there wasn't any cell service and it wasn't worth getting cited for.
I suppose that Linda's 'Alien Phonebooth' theory is as good as any other out there. Great hike and thanks as always for taking us along!

The road isn't posted just the land on the right side of the road. If a road is posted the sign will be facing you and there will be a fence or a crain across the road.

How do you secure your trailer at camp, when you go exploring with the truck?
We lock up our trailer several ways whenever we leave it and we usually are close by. Normally we don't leave our trailer behind at all.

@@gonagain I think they were old "party line " phone poles or telegraph poles for early settler farms . Remember early boundaries of properties and settlements changed a lot over the years. A lot of early buildings and places became lost to time.

Well, we both speak Hawaiian Pidgin, which is made up of Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese and English and I speak a little French, but that's it.
