I am one of Netduma's longest term sponsors so of course I was happy to get a chance to review the Netduma R2 Gaming Router. This Netduma R2 Review shows off the DumaOS, Geo-Filter, Ping Heatmap, QoS controls, hypertraffic, and a variety of cool software features. I do also talk about the hardware downsides of the device.

Just FYI even with a gigabit connection dynamic qos will improve your gaming because of buffer bloat. I doubt this router is good enough to do it over about 100mbps though, it takes good hardware to do dynamic qos buffer bloat control at gigabit speeds. Look up battlenonsense testing on buffer bloat if you want to get a basic idea of what it is and does.
I get 900/900mbps on this one. WiFi is 860mbps in the same room and 60mbps at the edge of its range. I will look into the buffer bloat thing. Maybe I should enable that feature.
@@Drift0r buffer bloat control does seem to help keep things much more consistent but the trade off is lower bandwidth... sometimes having to set a lower bandwidth of just 100mbps out of a gig connection to get buffer bloat under control.
@@codean909 You should only need to set it to speeds that low if your hardware cant handle higher speeds. A router with good hardware should handle much higher speeds than that while controlling bufferbloat. Bufferbloat is not always a problem, but it does cause big issues when you have multiple people using the internet at the same time, or when doing things like streaming.
@@Drift0r the net duma have had bufferbloat control for years. That’s why you set your speed to less than 100% of your connection speed and enable hypertraffic on your device.
@@JohnSmith-id6qm yeah I've used it since launch its great
Ay Driftor! Thanks for recommending the Astro A50s back when you did a review. While I’m happy with my current router this one looks really cool too. Thanks for the review, keep up the great work, and take care!
I hope you enjoy your A50s for years to come.
5:39 Florida men: Why must you hurt me this way?
Drift0r! If possible please let me know what ISP you are using. I just moved to the DFW area and am looking for a good provider
I'm sorry, router newbie here, is this router docsis 3.1 compatible? Im upgrading internet to mediacom 1 gig and trying to find a good router.
Just ordered the new R3 netduma with your code thanks man and im glad your health is so much better get to full health soon!
Thank you!
Is buying a router complicated? Like I have the FiOS quantum router. If I buy one cuz I just swap them out or will I have to call FiOS?
So can I just hook this up to my modem I have from Cox and use it just for my ps5 and everyone else in the house use the modem?
I have the Nighthawk model thanks to recommendations by you and Thunder and I love it. Just the server bubble and ping setter did wonders for my CoD experience. Can't fix how people play but I can fix how the game plays online.
You don’t get the latest version of duma OS if you use a nighthawk tho
@@ProjectRecon1 Should I get a R2 or an XR300?
@@Xierdan I had both and the R2 and was way better in my opinion
@@ProjectRecon1 You still using it and/or have any issues with it and should I look into any other brands? Sorry for spamming questions
@@Xierdan No I’m not. I recently moved and my new area had fiber available so I’m using that with the providers gateway which so far has been great.
Hey DriftOr, I live in the DFW area and am in search of a reliable network provider. I currently use cable and though their speeds are good (450 down) their ping is terrible. On COD I get no lower than 30 (ping) but usually connect to 42 or higher. I am interested in this router but if my provider sucks than this router isn't going to help much. I am currently using a Nighthawk but without the Duma OS. If you could recommend a provider that would be great. If your concerned about security and don't care to share or for other reasons, I understand.
How do you play in a server in australia for bot lobbies if youre in texas?
Would this work with an LTE connection? I have T-mobile Home Internet (LTE Modem), and I experience a TON of bufferbloat with my current Linksys Velop system. When I test my latency at the router itself, it shows 23-30ms. When I test on any device connected *to* the Linksys Velop, my latency is 70ms or above. I hardwired my xbox directly to my LTE Modem and bufferbloat went from an F/D to a C, but that's with the modem's built-in QoS, which I'm sure isn't the greatest. Just not sure if I would be wasting money if it wouldn't help out. My pings in Warzone are 120ms and above, which is not great at all..
was browsing on ddrwt to find! updates for my current nighthawk r6700v2 and somehow ended up on netdumas, purchasing the r2 ast night. reading the comments, I'm not sure if I made the right choice, seeing that rx500 seems to be the popular buy. any way, my real question is what's a good compatible or ideal cable modem (for spectrum, in so cal)? currently renting an sb6183 from spectrum..
Thank you for this review Driftor!
drift0r - "My upload speed is slow today "
Me - having an upload speed of 0.01mbps
How long does it take to deliver if u live in the US
If I already have a Nighthawk AX6 router, do you recommend this R2 for gaming only or the XR1000?
As you have an AX router which I’m guessing is the RAX50 the XR1000 would be the choice as it’s the same router but with a different look and Duma. The R2 can’t match its hardware so if WiFi is important you need to stick with NG.
You could if you wish use your AX router as an Access Point if you went for the R2 so that handles WiFi but the easiest option would be the XR1000.
Can you please twll me if it gets rid of packet loss??? Please
How do u go to that screen for the WiFi
Drifter, question if I bought this and set it up to maximize my internet does it affect the others that are playing with me in my party?
If your leader you can pick a server but remember that connection might not be their best server depending on their location. If someone else is party leader you will join the server they pick, Duma can’t influence some else’s selection.
what is the modem you have before netdumar2
hello can i ask you please. i make bridge netduma r2 everything good but i dont know if i have to put DMZ on my ISP modem (netduma r2 WAN ip or mac address) sorry for bad english. Thank you!
little did driftor know this video would later change the very world of warzone upside down lol
@b smigga so are you saying its worth buying 1?
Not really. Gaming routers have been around for years. Netduma's don't do anything different than other routers. They just do everything other routers do at a much more attractive price point.
How well is the Geo-Filtering working in 2023? Looking to use this for PS5 CoD MW 2. Anyone with a similar setup getting the Geo-Filter to work?
How do I open my nat for cod warzone?
Question for u guys, if u can afford the hawk version which is best. And is the software free on the hawk Netgear. I'm in UK too. Which could result in a big difference. I'm lagging in bo4 and it's not enjoyable. I'm.not looking for something to improve my gaming. Just to improve a nice fair game. With being £130 on sale from £150 on website. Bang for your buck or pound comes in to play too. Thanks, peace
If you are looking at a router to handle day to day life and you use WiFi too I would stick to a good router that’s basic. The R2 is a budget router hardware wise and with WiFi 6 now in full flow you have better security and throughput as devices appear that support the new standard.
Can you help me? I plugged everything in and I tried to connect on my phone and it says it cannot join the network
There’s an issue where the passwords are incorrect, the only work around is to wire in from a PC. Complete the setup but make a note of the password for the WiFi before you change it as any reset will default to this so next time it will be easier to set up.
Still using the R1 here and a couple of Ubiquiti AP's! Still works great!
Does this router work Spectrum? I have a spectrum router/modem and want to upgrade. (Cable internet)
Yeah it does, I had it. I return it to get XR1000
Can you get DDoS attacks when using this router? Or does it prevent them or something?
It can’t fully protect you.
Netduma r2 or XR500 NETGEAR Nighthawk what do you think?
Hey Driftor, do you know if the Nighthawks will be getting the update to DumaOS 3.0? I have the XR500.
This... I have one too
Sign up to the Netgear forum, you can download DUMA 3.0 beta for the XR500 right now, it's open to everyone.
Currently there's no adblocker on the XR500 yet but will be added later on :)
@@iTzHe4DHuNt3r I’m not sure it will arrive as NG promote Armor and it’s security. The problem is resets are required and all info is lost on what you white list which is a pain so many now simply use browser extensions that do a better job.
Is a gaming router such as that good for a home wifi router because it’s so fast? I have a net gear nighthawk Rax 80 or 120.
The 120 is going to give you way better WiFi, it’s a completely different router compared to the R2.
Would it work with google/nest mesh WiFi networks?
Also, is this even applicable to something like only using on the PS4 versus an actual gaming PC? I don’t own a PC for games.
Can’t answer your 1st question, but yes it’ll work with just your console, I use it on the Xbox only.
Not well :(
I have a question that really needs answering: please anyone who can answer this. Why does this router only use like 10% of my internet speed??...I have 500mbps internet and my main router will use all 500 most of the time but the netduma is only showing 30ish on speed tests....the benchmark thing says around 3-400 but when I do an actual speed test it says around 30. Please advise do I need to go into my normal router and turn off the Wi-Fi?? I have 4 pcs so I don't wanna have to run ethernet cables all over the place
who makes the router ? is it like netgear or some other brand?
Man I wish we all had this kind of router ugh I WANT that geofilter function so bad
Whoa there, I didn't know u lived in Dallas too Drifter? Would u look at that? Greetings from a fellow Texan my man, lol I'm actually from Dallas. Nice to see someone from the city doing impressive things. Keep up the great content my guy!
He isn't from Dallas, but he lives in the metroplex. I'm not going to say what town because he recently had an issue with a nut job showing up to his house after harassing him online. I live about an hour and a half west of you guys out by possum kingdom lake if you have ever heard of that.
@@birddog61999 This is definitely a first hearing about possum kingdom lake. I may have to visit with the Mrs, but regarding the guy who went to Drift0r's house, I can only imagine the type of headache that must have been.
I love the netduma I have the R1 and even though the hardware is slow it's still a great router.
The AD blocker is godly ! Will definitely consider buying it.
Even better, more customizable, and constantly updated, look into pi-hole with a raspberry pi. Very easy to set up, and super cheap.
hey Drift0r I just used your code and bought this router thanks for the 5% off!!
I have already ISP Router (Fiber optic) should I get rid of it or just connect from ISP router to Netuma R2?
set it to bridge mode or act as modem only and forward to a router. fyi, doesnt have to be netduma. any brand name router will work. netduma is overhyped and you will most likely run into problems in the future since the support is dwindling.
Just grabbed one! Used the code fantastic video!
Can I only have my PS4 plugged into the router, then keep laptop and everything else going straight to the modem? If so, would bandwidth allocation be pointless then?
If you set it up like that then you will not have an open nat and you cannot manage anything outside of the network created by the netduma
@@maperez12 So in other words, everything would need to go through the router?
Does this work on AT&T modem?
How do gaming routers even work? Do I have to plug it up to my regular router? I want one because I can’t get my router in my room and my speeds on my pc are low because I run a wifi adapter.
I would look at the XR1000 if you want WiFi connection. This is the new AX router with DumaOS 3.0 and would give you the best experience with Duma. Gaming routers though tend to be more hassle than a set and forget router.
@@Minpeace How about if you're looking for both WiFi and Ethernet? I need something that's good for gaming but that also holds strong WiFi for my phone and other WiFi devices.
Might be adding to my 2021 budget
I have 1000 up and down which router will be the best for me? Need it for competitive cod
Get an R2
I had the beta R1 for years. I just swapped over to the Netgear xr 300 that has the netduma software.
does using a cable makes the wi fi slower for people on the same network ?
That’s not easy to answer as you have QoS and a restriction for bandwidth built into the router. Modern high tier routers on a 64bit system are so fast that you would not notice a difference if all things equal.
The wifi on this router is straight garbage even if nobody else is using the internet.
Which server has the most noobs, then lock it to a 1 mile radius.
That's just a server with me, myself and I
Will this help with my 1GB virign HUB4 on Warzone...
I get massive packet burst and desync
save ur self headache and leave virginmedia ASAP. mofos are a scam
no, if your on wifi check for interferences on the band and change to a non-crowded channel and check signal strength. also do a stress test. if on ethernet, also do stress test to see if delay and jitter are 150ms, 30ms or less respectively. if all's good check if other devices on the network are hogging bandwidth. if they are then set qos per device allowing x amount of bandwidth. if all's well and still get packet burst it could be wifi adapter issue in the end device or router/ AP or just saturated line from isp.
I wish I had one of these. I love tinkering with my network settings, or rather, I love finding the sweetspot where my connection performs best... Alas, I am poor.
If my friends are in my city, and I have them in my party, they should have a better consistent experience too right?
No geo filter provides you with the best server you choose, your friends have no guarantee that they will see the same as they all use different paths and everyone’s lines are different. Duma only offer the user the ability to search for a server they want and it does not mean everyone else will see the same.
Yes actually, you can whitelist your friends IP
This may be a dumb question but does this run as a stand alone internet source? In other words, would i be able to buy this and cancel my regular internet that I’m paying over $100/month for and just use that router without my regular monthly fee?
@TheOne TrueStyle didn’t think so. But was hella confused with the whole thing
Lol this doesn’t provide internet service. It’s just a fancy router basically
Would have liked to see some sort of comparison between the R1 and R2 in this review. Not including that seems like a pretty big oversight tbh but I'm guessing it's because you'd basically have to admit that there's no real good reason to upgrade if you already have a R1 lol and they don't want you saying that because they wouldn't sell as many routers. I could be wrong of course but it looks like pretty much all the same stuff I already have with my R1.
So how does it work when you are playing with friends?
Good luck trying to eveb let them join your party or you joining theirs
XR500 VS Netduma R2? I really want to know which one is better.
XR500 has better hardware so better throughput, better WiFi standard as it’s a wave 2 device. The new XR1000 is out, that is AX and comes with 3.0.
Nice been waiting for this! No 🧢
Is it good as a base home router? I need something that's good for gaming as well as good for my WiFi devices. I'm using a stock FiOS router that I pay them to basically rent it and it's terrible.
No, to be honest the WiFi is very limited as it’s a wave 1 device so you don’t have the coverage or throughput that many AC routers nowadays have and with AX being pushed you might be better going with the XR1000 which has better hardware and WiFi.
@@Minpeace So the XR1000 has better WiFi and it's good for gaming?
@@Richy- it is, the hardware is much better but it’s not a top tier WiFi 6 router.
🤔🤔 I live in Htx and I play on 60ping on fornite. With this router can I lower it?
Maybe and if it does very little
Nighthawk has some CPU issues where the device turns off randomly due to heat. I can't recommend it personally, but when its not doing that, it's incredible.
This is not a Nighthawk router, they are Netgear routers, this is Netdumas router which is manufactured to their spec by a third party but yes it does get rather hot and seems to be an issue sadly.
This device seems very useful and im thinking about getting it. But im wondering will this increase my matchmaking times if i only allow servers under 40 ms ping for example? Or if i only allow servers in california where i live?
Most likely depending on the game.. a game like COD with strict SBMM will try its hardest to match you with similar players and once it realizes it can’t connect outside that range it will finally put you in a game. I say it’s worth it though
It depends on your needs, the WiFi is weak, far more than the XR500. This is an AC1200 where the XR500 is a wave 2 device and uses OEM drivers. All netgear routers use drivers from the chip manufacturers so performance will be better. XR1000 is a step up with AX.
Hardware makes a difference, it’s important
@@Minpeace Thanks for the reply, yea i watched driftor’s review of the xr500 and what you said makes sense. I live alone in an apartment so i don’t need great wifi range the R2 should be perfect for my situation and what im looking for
@@Gustavo-xz8os any issues just post on Netdumas forum, hope you enjoy the router 😊
@@Minpeace yea thx, just preordered it
why would you blur your DHCP settings? XD
I'm not well versed when it comes to this stuff (ping, servers etc). Could someone explain to me how this helps when I'm playing Modern Warfare?
lagerbeer1974 Ping (Lower is better, can be seen in the leaderboard) = Connection Stability, how fast your cod sees what is actually happening for everyone else in your lobby - Server = the thing your console or pc is connecting to that lets you play online cod - basically the DumaOS will find servers that are closer to where you live that have a better connection so you can have a lag free online cod experience
@@KortexAU thanks for the info.
@@lagerbeer1974 it works of a data base of known servers. The GUI shows connection rates and you can tell it what you prefer to connect too.
the R2 doesn't want to give me an open nat, especially on PC, the R1 would though so idk whats up
Using your code brought the price down to £130.75 delivered in the UK. Thanks.
@Jackary It does what it says it does. I'm locked to the main CoD server in the UK.
@Jackary Nothing can lower your ping apart from physically moving closer to the server [assuming you have a fast connection anyway] I ping 23-31ms to the London server which is fine and I've capped it at 40ms so I won't be connected to anything higher than that, ever.
I was wondering when this was coming
Yo... its on sale from $150, $175 base? That's actually a solid price for a router these days, especially with the insane software support - but it does depend on sq footage.
The software and features look fantastic. But you have a connection that provides a very high upload speed. What about most ISP connections that are in the range of only 15 - 20 Mbps for upload? Would this router actually help with gaming?
Buy a wifi6 router you'll be a lot happier the R2 was the biggest waste of money ever.
@@nucl3arboNg I have a good, expensive modem, but it doesn't have features like the R2. Why is the R2 a waste of money? Does it not really restrict connections? Or is there something else that makes it a poor value?
@@nucl3arboNg If you game on an Ethernet connection then I would assume Wifi6 becomes irrelevant? Or still worth it to get. What router/modem would you recommend instead
How does it work for playing with friends?
If your friend is the host and they connect to a game outside of your radius or ping limit?
Will you just disconnect? Or will it not allow the party to join?
And if you are the host I'm assuming that it pretty much would work as if you were playing solo?
very informative, thank you

And where can I cop some good gaming headphones?
Best Buy. For good headphones at a fair price I would recommend the Astro A20's.
Do you need modem for this?
Yes
Will this work with cable internet?
yes
I use a nighthawk 6500 and it’s a monster paired with my google fiber no lag or latency ever 😁
do any of you use netduma on ps4
Do you recommend this router for a player outside the United States?
This router can be used outside of the US, it’s a British based company so happily uses U.K. services, Europe and has a wide range of users across the globe. It does have at the moment no DFS channels.
You need to consider what your router will handle and if WiFi is a major concern.
@@Minpeace I live in the Dominican Republic and play modern warfare and warzone most of the time, but I don't know if this router would work as I think there are only two dedicated servers in Florida. In the case of COD, do you know if it connects to peers as well or non-dedicated servers? Or How many servers exists?
@@JorgeEncarnacion peer to peer it will connect to but as it’s peer the connection can move unlike a static server. Destiny uses what some call hybrid peer to peer and well it’s not great but you can still happily game but not all the features work.
That said as with all routers you need to pick a router that suits your network, coverage and so on.
@@Minpeace Thank you.

FOR CONSOLE GAMERS
I found if u use the game profiles with max ping set. it works GREAT. I play COD on PS4 with my ping set to 50ms max.
I own one as well and the only issue I have is that you have to have their operating system open in your browser for all of the filtering and bandwidth allocation to be working.
No? It should do it whether the browser is open or closed.
It does indeed work in the background but you require it open to monitor the system.
So this does work with the consoles right ?
Yes, it is your router, your console must connect to a router to function. So yeah your good.

If ping was king for matchmaking in cod, I've immediately purchase one but with sbmm so thick... what's the point honestly
But you will cut out the SBMM servers with bad ping
In 2023 is this still the best router on the market? Just doing research for a future place. Good upload.
What’s the downside of using a gaming router vs a regular one
Bugs, they tend to be far more buggy and with Duma it really requires you to be logged in while gaming to check connections.
Looks cool and I was really thinking about getting one. Looks and sounds too complicated though. I’ll stick to me router COX provided to me lmao
Dont. I got one after watching this video. It is a nightmare trying to find lobbies and connecting with friends impossible. The connection better but not god mode. It takes long to find matches even solo and with these games switching lobbies after every match you barely play 3 matches every hour. I think SBMM makes it even harder for the R2.
*cuts out florida* hahahaha
Florida is its own... err, thing.
I dropped in to say the same thing. Lol
Wait im in florida what did he do
Do u have to pay for that router every month
Only your isp charges.
I read it doesn't help with sbmm. My question is, if you can get let's say 30ping, why doesnt it give you that connection regardless of the router?
Different server from your position has different routes hence why there are differences. Pathways can also change even when playing which is why peering comes into play.
Does this get around SBMM?
Can't tell if this is a real question or not. But no
@@mw2blackopsamazing when you are good, you get put into shittier servers because of SBMM
