    “How many friends in you class, Una” the brutal truth of my life.

      Obviously, that answer would only be correct if said friend was a female.

    Your videos and methods are incredible. It was difficult finding you when I first searched You Tube. I did a search for "Learning Spanish" and could not find you. Once I did, I could follow along with un, una, uno, as well as nouns, verbs ....etc. Thank you for doing these. Maybe putting "Learning Spanish" somehow into your title will blow your views up, because you are at the top of your game. Thanks again Amigo!

      Angella Faimanifo Thank you so much! For both the wonderful comments (really, thank you) and the insight. I've just been pumping out the videos. I really need to start trying to get them out to more people. Your comment really drove that home. I'll take your advice for sure. I appreciate that, most helpful comment ever!

    That is well put, thanks. Funny though, with language, and, as a child learns, it is simply "what sounds right" without knowing the rule. They hear it the right way, and which is why you can also learn each, just by hearing the way people say it.

    When speaking to someone, how would that person know if you mean "a" or "one" when saying "un / una"?
    For example if I said:
    "Yo tengo un hermano"
    I could mean "I have one brother" or "I have a brother".
    How could someone understand which one do you mean?

    So is there a difference between Chico and niño/ chica and niña

  • @jessesleight8682
    @jessesleight8682 10 років тому +2

    This is the thing I'm having trouble with: to me, "one" and "a, an" have different nuances of meaning. "One" emphasizes the number of the noun and "a" emphasizes the existence of the noun. So there may be times when I want to say "uno amigo" instead of "un amigo" to emphasize the fact that there is only one friend, right? "Hay uno amigo en la clase, no dos!" And how do you emphasize that there is only one girl (because "una chica" can mean "one girl" or "a girl")? Are you sure you can't say "uno chica" (because you can say "cuatro chicas" without changing the "o" to an "a," and cinco and ocho are the same way)?

    • @elspanishdude
      @elspanishdude  10 років тому +2

      Jesse Sleight I'm glad you asked. Numbers are not gender specific. There's only one version of each number. Other than one. Dos. Tres. Cuatro. There's not cuatra. Cinco. No cinca. As far as the different nuanced meaning, I agree that "a/an" and "one" seem different in English, that's because we have two words for it. That's one of the points of the video, it's a little confusing for we English speakers because in Spanish they only have one word. But when you think about it, it really is the same thing. "a" can't be more than one. Otherwise, you'd say "some". Which is "unos" is Spanish. And you can't say "uno chico" or "uno amigo" or "uno chica". Un chico. Un amigo. And always "una chica". How many friends do you have? "Uno" or "Tengo un amigo."

    • @jessesleight8682
      @jessesleight8682 10 років тому

      Yup. I actually have another question, too. How do you ask a negative question (or a "doesn't" question) in spanish? I've heard that you simply add "no" to the end, like "Le gusta comer, no?" meaning "Doesn't he like to eat?"

    What about, "Es la una"? That's what brought me here. Why isn't it "Es el uno"?

    • @elspanishdude
      @elspanishdude  10 років тому +5

      Katy B It can be either one. If the thing you're talking about is male, it's "Es el uno." If the thing you're talking about is female, it's "Es la una." Usually, if it's not specified (counting?) it's male, so uno. "La una" is often said for "one o'clock" because your're talking about "horas" or "hours" (it's implied) which is female. If a train was coming and you say that it was Train #1, and somebody asked "Which train is that?" You could say "Es el uno" because "train" is "tren" which is male. If this doesn't answer your question, give me the specific situation.

    • @katyb4735
      @katyb4735 10 років тому +3

      That helps tremendously. I tend to get so caught up on things that don't seem to follow the standard that I forget to look deeper. your statement, "If the thing you're talking about is female, it's "Es la una." ... "horas" or "hours" (it's implied) which is female." really made it click for me. Thank you. I very much appreciate your videos

    @1:26 But there *is* masculine/feminine with *some* Spanish numbers, namely the ones that end in one. "Veintiuna ciudades" but "veintiún hombres". This is yet another annoying exception in Spanish that was clearly intended to drive non-native speakers insane.
