You could fill that old raised bed with sand for the littles to have a sand box. They will stay busy while you are right there working in your garden. You can put plastic bottles over those bamboo stakes to prevent injuries. Would love to see your garden layout on paper with what veg you will grow in each bed and where fruits will be placed. Little by little it will come together!🙂
The plastic bottles can be painted pretty colors and if you use a sharp knife & cut 3 small flaps in the sides then bend them out a little they will spin in the breeze and help keep some garden vermin scared away too.
@@denisewilson8367 Cute idea but not sure about the sharp edges of the plastic flaps on little hands that will want to grab them. But i think i will use your idea for my taller tomato stakes!
6 years ago I searched "How to homestead with a baby" as I had just found out I was pregnant with my 4th very surprise baby to us and during a very rough time of life! I fell in love with you and your family and spent weeks going back and watching your videos from the very beginning. (312 videos 😉) You made me realize just how possible things are. Seeing you now, pushing through in this time of your life is so inspiring. Take the rough days and accept them as they come, just remember you are making such a difference to so many of us! ❤️
It’s a hose they drag out - you’re safe! I’ve done a lot of what you’re doing (technically I’m building my 4th lifetime garden) you’re on the right path!
I left a relationship commitment in 2020 and purchased a property with a large bonus lot. I started a garden and share it with the community. The neighbors buy plants and supplies to contribute and help the whole season. The only thing I do is plan the layout and coordinate the planting. They love sharing the experience. It’s not my primary home and I got married this year. My husband and I have built a homestead and more garden space and share the rewards with everyone. Community around food is so rewarding 💚 If they have ways they can share the experience in anyway - it’s more likely everyone wins! Bri, the love you have in your heart and share is so abundant it will overflow to everyone around you XO If you’re looking for an Iowa escape, we would be glad to share our homestead waterfront access with you and your family!
For filling the Propane tanks here, the man typically will walk up to locate your tank if he's unfamiliar with the property, then he will return with a long hose to attach safely and securely to the tank top, with no leaks , he will fill your tank. I cannot wait to see this series of videos progress with the garden from scratch, as I am looking forward to starting one myself!!! Thanks for sharing this valuable information. with us. Cindy Ings, NL, Canada
Our propane truck backs into our yard and fills with a hose, BUT their hose is not as long as your yard. So maybe call the company and ask to make sure.
Both propane tanks I’m personally familiar with in Ohio sit about 30’ from where the trucks park using a long hose. One is from a driveway and the other just parks on the side of a country road.
I would definitely go with raised beds, several of them and you will be amazed by the quantity of food, flowers and herbs you can grow. No way I would start digging especially in that kind of ground. Also easier to tend.
Yep! I live on the side of a mountain. I used cinder blocks for raised beds then used cattle panels to make greenhouses. I imported the free soil and also used compost from my animals. Way less work!
@Karen Grammond Oh, I am so worried about her H.O.A. I have dealt many and they can be quite strict. I hope she checks with them before she digs up her yard.
I have been doing raised beds for 6 years now. I love them. I made mine from wood and a few need some pieces replaced. I would love to be able to afford the metal ones. So much easier to replenish the soil. I do no till in mine to keep the weeds down.
Edible Acres UA-cam channel has a deer ‘fence’ made from one strand of fishing line and some jingle bells. It works because the deer can’t see the fishing line so they don’t try to jump it. That might be good for you HOA/ deer problem.
It’s so nice to watch you and feel like perhaps I’m doing okay with my little suburban garden. I really have no idea what I’m doing 😂, but I laid it out in the same way, sort of eyeballed the lines of it and measured with tape measures. This is our second year just putting seeds in the ground, adding some compost, trying to learn from our mistakes, and eating some really expensive but very satisfying lettuce. Thank you so much for putting these videos out there - I’m excited to follow your new garden from scratch.
You’ve been a play in my inspiration to start my own channel and start sharing my tiny apartment garden🌿💛 thank you for coming back and continuing to be a part of my inspiration. I hope I can bring viewers the same peace you do🌱
That would be great to see an apartment garden, I live in a city with a smaller yard, I recently started a UA-cam channel as well, let me know what your channel is I'll hope over follow 😊
Stivers Homestead does all their gardening in raised beds and they grow a TON of food. I think raised beds are more visually pleasing and would be less likely to draw negative attention from the neighbors or HOA. I would also suggest using the beds along the front edge of the yard to grow a profusion of flowers, also for visual appeal.
You are an inspiration to those who feel hopeless. God bless you in this wonderful journey. I enjoy watching your videos. You look so fresh. Looking forward to see your garden ❤
A portage style garden would be pretty since you cannot have a fence. An HOA can be very strict so be sure to read your bylaw requirements. I know our HOA is very particular.😜
Thank you so much for bringing us along! I'm getting excited just watching the process, and it's giving me more inspiration to make my tiny yard and little flower beds at our rental house grow as much as they can!
I plant east to west, because the wind knocks down my corn more north to south. Then I got smart and got hog panels for the corn , cucumbers, bird house gourds, and sunflowers I tie them to the panels when they get big enough. I like your idea of planting your pumpkins and squash along the fence area. I plant zinnias and marigolds, cosmos for all the pollinators to come to my garden. I plant as many flowers by seed to make it beautiful as well as grow all my vegetables. I cage all my tomatoes and they get 7 feet tall. My cages are 5 ‘ tall. I’m excited for you and wish you well , happy planting, my garden is my happy place. And I hope yours will be too for you.
My propane is delivered via a hose. They park on the street out front and bring the hose to the back of my house to fill the tank. They won’t drive o your lawn .
The little raised bed that the previous owner left would be great for either annual herbs like a variety of different types of basil or perhaps perennial herbs that you don't want to invade other garden areas such as mint or lemon balm, and you could tuck nasturtium or calendula in there too.
I’m loving watching Bri from scratch. Your courage and strength is inspiring. I too had to do a from scratch 9 years ago and it a tough process. Bri, you could always use the extra beds to grow green compost like comfrey or similar plants that you can harvest and use to feed your main plants and significantly help your poor soil also it’s organic too
Thanks for walking us through this process with you. I’m learning a lot. You have a lot more energy than me, my grandkids are your children’s ages right now. However, I definitely want to do a garden this year! Though it will be smaller than yours Bri. God bless you. ❤
Bri, in Florida many housing developments have gas/ propane piped in… I’d check the top of your tank to see who placed the tank. Give them a call. Check to see if you’re in any HOA… they have guidelines for plant placement on a side yard that faces another’s front door. You should have received a set of bylaws from your HOA at closing. See if you can find a copy of the survey. It should give you many of the measurements your looking for.
I used to live in the country and had a lg garden, now I live in a city and have a small garden but still get excited for planting season. I just started a channel recently and get inspiration from you to stay real 💞🌿
Thanks for sharing. I am not a first time Gardner but I am moving my current garden to another place and expanding my garden so it feels like starting over. Excited to watch your journey.
I moved from Oklahoma to Minnesota 7 years ago after the death of my husband. I became the single mother of a 3 year old. I did a little gardening there but it was so hot and dry that gardening was hard. Here the gardening seaso. Is shorter but I don't need to water as much and it is ugh cooler. I am 64 and somlast year I put in raised beds in part of my garden and will put more in this year. As I get older it is easier fir me to work in the reason beds. You are going to have a wonderful garden. You are lucky to have such a large yard. Love yhe name of your new channe.l
Your other option, no till lay down cardboard and dump the compost right on the cardboard. Now that the beds are laid out it will be easy. A WHOLE lot less work
Please keep in mind gardening on an incline will cause soil erosion. I am enjoying you planning of the garden! Don't you love it when a Plan Comes Together!!
They use very long hoses to reach the propane tank. They'll drive as close as possible on the street or your driveway and then stretch hose from there. But the trucks are too heavy to drive onto your yard.
Great job explaining the width of the rows and paths It made a lot of sense I’m so glad you are starting on this now as I think it will be very relaxing even tho a lot of work and will give you more control of your life😊
Look for a small rolling garden bench for one to save your back, when u plant or weed, make sure it rolls sideway, As a older mother I used mine to pick toys off the floor.

That's what they do here too. I'm in maine. Ive never seen a propane or oil truck in or on anyone's yard or lawn, only in driveways with long hoses.
Yes they will drag a hose. Imagine driving a heavy truck on a yard. They would sink or leave ruts in a beautiful yard
Here you place the propane where they can reach it reasonably.
Our propane truck backs into our yard and fills with a hose, BUT their hose is not as long as your yard. So maybe call the company and ask to make sure.

I believe her brother checked to see about a garden, he was told yes to garden but no to chickens.
Hi Bri! SO HAPPY you’re back ! I’m gonna follow your guide for my garden. We moved to a home with a little land, and I want a garden.
Also, have you made sure you can have electric fence with the hoa? I’d hate for you to do all this work and not be allowed
Great start to your garden!!We are cheering you on from Texas!!
That looks like a Bri sized garden!!! It'll be awesome!!
