URGENT MESSAGE!
Hey Becky! Everything is so amazing! There is one thing very urgent for you to consider! I manage a community garden with over 60 raised bed, , they are 16’ x 5’ and 3’ deep. They all started having a major problem with the boards on the long side bowing, due to the weight of the soil over time! You can prevent it NOW by putting in a support board at the 8’ point, running across and attached to the edges on each side! It is a pretty simple fix if done now! I hope you have time to consider this issue before the soil goes in.
We all love you girl! Keep up your great content!
Yes very good idea as my beds did start to do that just from soil erosion and the weather as we get alot of snow in Wisconsin but I would do that to prevent problems down the road. How girl are you going to do all this gardening w baby boy and being between 6 & 9 months old oh my but then I think Becky has alot of ambition and your much much younger actually about my daughter age somehow it will all work out well for you.
Isn’t the middle posts on these kinda acting as braces?
25:40 you can see the middle post they built.
Good suggestion. My husband did posts as well as a board the braces the middle to hold the top together for the long raised bed in my greenhouse. It has held and is easy to work around.
I don't think she reads messages on her videos unfortunately.
I rarely let anyone leave my farm without a homemade something. My partner broke his hand and I had to hire a pool guy for a few months he has gotten eggs, homemade bread and cranberry grape jam. My ferriers argue who's coming as there always home made muffins for them as they come first thing in the morning. I love that about you. My farm is such a blessing
I love sending people with home made stuff. Right now my life is busy enough that I don't get to make treats very often but when I do, my coworkers get them. Hopefully life will calm down soon.
Becky, I am so happy for you. This is so exciting to see your garden coming together now so you don’t lose a year. I enjoy your channel so much.
Love this 🥰
How many times do you talk about this? It is basic courtesy around here to do it in secrecy...
I would highly recommend you add hardware cloth, (metal mesh) to the bottoms of all the raised beds before they fill them with soil. This will prevent moles from eating & destroying all your veggies. 🥕🥦🥬🌽🫑
I’m so excited for you & your new garden space ❤
Totally agree
Make sure you put HIGH quality landscape fabric down in all your wall ways between your raised beds. Also put a valve on each raised bed so you have control of how much water each bed gets. Then you can turn off water if you don’t have anything planted in the bed.
I think having them in a run will be fine. When we had our chickens free range they always made a mess on our porches and when they had 100 acres to roam. You’re right, it was embarrassing when people came over because they would have to step over the chicken mess and as much as I loved my girls, it is a daily chore to keep up with their mess. Also, not everyone likes chickens. I had people that were terrified of my chickens. Every homestead is different and I think having your girls in one area is okay. It keeps them safe and keeps your homestead the way you want it. There is nothing wrong with that.
I'm in college and very tired and worn out these days. Becky, your videos give me so much joy. I love following your journey and I just got back from buying lettuce seeds at the store and no sooner had I gotten them planted did I get your video notification. What an affirmation! May our gardens be fruitful and bring peace and joy this year.
Don’t worry about your chickens not free ranging. We have so many hawks and owls, who would attack our girls, so they stay in a coop with a little run inside. They are very happy girls! Such amazing progress, thanks for sharing!
Hi our hens have to stay in a covered run because of bird flu, they like it!
I would love to see a video with really transparent cost information on these garden projects! While I do know cost will vary from area to area, I’d love to know a rough idea of what to expect cost wise for projects myself. It would be very helpful!
Hi Becky - when it comes to doing pressure treated posts, they are not only cost effective but also since going in the ground last longer as it takes longer for them to rot. To try and alleviate any toxins that may be in pressure treated wood from leeching into your garden soil you can get some linseed oil and a paint brush from your local home depot and coat the pressure treated boards with this linseed oil to prevent any leeching from happening. Linseed is made from flax and is food grade and safe! Hope this helps!
Thanks for that tip, I was also wondering about that good to know
That’s a great tip to share!
@@gailrigelsky3224 thx ideally you should treat them as the boxes are built and prior to putting in the ground but treating the exposed parts of the treated posts that will be seen/ exposed in the bed is fine as well!
Oh that's good to know thanks! My husband wanted to use pressure treated wood but I was against it as I didn't want it contaminating the soil.
@@theirishcailin333 another option to use is to paint your posts with old fashioned milk paint it is also food safe comes is various colors and is non toxic commonly used for children’s toys, cutting boards and for folks intolerant to traditional paint. I would also suggest painting the posts as the boxes are built prior to the boxes/posts being put in the ground. 👍🏻
The secondhand excitement I have for you is unreal! What a fantastic and exciting project 💕
This. So much this. We have roughly 1/5 of an acre which includes the space our house and pool take. We have a good size garden but I so want more space for an orchard and garden. It's beautiful to see the progress Josh and Becky make in their renovation. I feel so much joy for them and I'm taking notes. One day we will have more space for the garden. ❤
Becky I’m starting my first real vegetable garden you have inspired me ❤
She inspired me last year and I had such a productive garden. Good luck this year!
Congrats!!!! I started my firat garden last year thanks to the same reason!!
Enjoy!
Xxoo
@@haleyhompstead5526same, she inspired me last year. Hope everyone has a blessed garden season.
Has she posted this year's starting seeds? The videos are so mixed up and older. Getting confusing watching anymore. Hope she starts to go in order and more current then almost a month old. My thought any way. Let me know if I just missed it
Yay! Loving the garden & landscaping. ❤️
🍓Just FYI: Commercial strawberry growers generally run each strawberry planting for 5 years, and then let it lie fallow for 1 year & build soil during the off year. This is something to keep in mind in the future to keep the productivity high.
I agree. I was also thinking she could rotate non-perennial beds by type each year: nightshade, allium, gourd, etc to let any acquired diseases or pests die out.
Didn’t she plant garlic where the strawberries where, from the previous home owner?
@@LurkerSmurf no
What do you mean when you say lie fallow? Do you mean to just not pick the berries one year?
@@bethlewis9981 to let it lie fallow mean to not plant anything in that bed for a full year...just let the soil "rest". Not usually necessary in a home garden as we are usually adding compost etc all the time (once or twice per year)
It just tickles me to see the chickens living their best life, hanging around the landscapers, waiting for the good bugs. You go, girls!
It's more polished the way the workers had it with the darker border.
I liked it too as it matched the dark trim on the windows
@@sbaker3426 This!!
I’m just thrilled for you When you went outside to see the progress after the work men left and you said WOW. I thought you were going to burst into tears ( I did ) it’s all coming along so beautifully. ❤
I can't imagine how much all that work cost whew
I know right ! With the cost of wood cheez.
It is beginning to look gorgeous. Love the walkway and river stones. You might consider checking out what Living Traditions Homestead in Missouri has done with their chicken and duck run protecting the animals and their fruit trees from both ground and air predators.
Thank you for mentioning that channel, I need to go check that out too. Gophers are my nemesis!
Hi Becky, I’ve been watching ur channel since summer 2022. I’m very much a city girl who doesn’t cook. I don’t even like going into my kitchen, however ur videos have me transfixed. I’m interested in ur meal prep, canning and baking. I watch u like a tv show, which I rate u at a 10, even when u make an error or drop something. I end ur videos with a big smile. I may even start cooking soon. Keep it up!!! Bye Friend. 🙂
My husband had a landscaping company and I realize that this project is a BIG investment. I was wondering just how much this project is costing and if you have been able to fund it using the money you get from your UA-cam channel?
OMG!! Your landscapers are doing impeccable stellar quality work!! That first box is the BOMB.
As a professional landscaper(30 years exp)... I'm sorry but even though the walkway looks very nice... Without a short/not very high bridge going over it... the dry bed looks fake.
a friend pointed out all of the Beckie-splaining in your videos & now sadly I can’t unhear it
I know Baby A is easy right now. You can wear him. When your garden is in full swing and it’s HOT outside, I’m afraid you’re in for a rude awakening. He will be sleeping less and you’ll need to be attending to him more. I wish you all the luck in the world Becky. I only had one, when they’re 6 - 8 months old, they require so much attention- when they’re toddler… good luck! I’m now 61 and so grateful that my grands are big enough to actually help but so thankful I don’t have littles. I had zero time for anything 🤷♀️
My chickens will always be free range. It’s so much better for them, mess and all. 🤷♀️
@@themonkeymama yup! Exactly what I’ve been thinking! She’s going to be bonkers by July. Babies don’t stay babies. Toddlers are BUSY little people. There’s no way I could’ve done what she’s been doing when mine was 6 - 8 months old. I only had one, so no older siblings to help. I do wish her luck, I do, I’m not criticizing either, it’s just real life.
Unfortunately I was lost at no more free range chickens due to the mess. At the end of the day it comes with the territory. If they not going to be free range just ensure they don't run around in their own poop etc. Sadly that's where I ended the video
Not a gardener at all but I love watching your endeavors. It's very soothing and calming to the soul. I appreciate you and others who are more in touch with the land to be able to bring forth nourishment and sustenance with your own hands. It's I believe something that can improve the environment and certainly a sustainable life style. I really admire all of your efforts. The chickens are so adorable at how nosy they are with the landscapers. They makes me giggle.
Wow I am so jealous! Million-dollar home I am sure with all that land. 100k for sure for the landscaping...I guess people on SS better send you a few dollars ...lmao! Don't get me wrong, I am not being catty! Happy for you!
Good call on switching the dark grey for the light grey stones. It looks so much bigger. The herringbone pattern is gorgeous. Simply beautiful! 🌷
I’m slightly confused on why the raised beds are so close to the road - Especially so if you have to put up a fence around the garden to keep the deer out. It will neck up your road which could change your aesthetic. Just a thought
My dad and I just put up a fishing line fence to keep deer out. It has been 3 weeks and so far it works. We can even see their footprints stopping at the line. It's super easy and cheap to keep the deer out. They can't see the fishing line but they feel it and can't figure out how to get past it. We put t-posts every 50ft or so and made about 3 lines with 40lb fishing line and enclosed the garden.
What a good idea! I may try that in my raised beds by my house since I can’t fence there!
Everything is looking awesome.
Will the videos be caught up soon? It’s seems they’re about 3 weeks behind right now.
The dark border is pretty. Welcoming and gives definition to the walkway.
I love seeing all the garden beds come together! I also just want to say I’m grateful you are keeping your son private and not putting him in monetized videos. Looking forward to more garden updates ☺️
I think it is very wise to keep parts of your life private. She already shares so much
I liked the dark gray bricks too. Looks nice. God bless you and your family ✝️
You are so very blessed! I am 61 and just last year was my first year of having a small vegetable garden. Since I rent I had to do everything in pots and mobile raised beds. This year I will be developing a small garden at a piece of property I own. I will not be able to be there during the week so I will be counting on the irrigation being on timers. Crossing my fingers it will all work out!
I so enjoying watching your videos. Thank you for being you! You feel like a friend. :)
I also love simplicity and muted tones. I however loved the two tone walkway but your finished mono tone looks nice also.
What does a job like this cost? I would love to do this with my property, but can't imagine this being affordable for me..
This old gal is so envious of what will become the most beautiful garden, I’m looking forward to you sharing what you will be growing this summer
Pam here again….i was thinking about the enclosed beds that the previous owners had in….it seems they really thought that out to keep animals and birds out of the berries. As prolific as they were…and they are established plants…too bad you can incorporate that into your new plan. Or it is a ready made chicken run! Smile. I also noted the fencing they had around their current fruit trees?? Keeping the deer out. A massive property!! Just amazing!!
Wow. The beds are exciting to see. Your landscapers are doing an awesome job of leveling them. It will be so much fun to see it all completed when you take the first batch of little plants and seeds to the beds.
The rules for "Josh and I" or "Josh and me"..........(this is a copy and paste from a website, not my personal words)
There's an easy way to know whether to use "Sally and I" or "Sally and me." Just take "Sally" out of the sentence for a second. Would you say, "Mom baked cookies for I"? "Please take a picture of I"? Or "Just ask I"? No, of course you wouldn't; you would naturally say "me" instead of "I." So if you would naturally say "me," then you should use "me" in conjunction with the other person's name.
Lol Becky does not care about basic grammar. 😂😂😂
She could also just say “us” and “we” if she can’t figure it out 😂
Or, just say "it's our favourite" because we naturally know she would be referring to her and Josh.
Baby A is getting so big already! Your landscaping is looking great. Can't wait to see your garden tours this summer!
Lol Becky should have a counter on her screen showing everytime she says she gave the workers strawberry jam! 🤣 Love your vids!
(a) It's SO cool seeing the progress of the landscaping!
(b) I truly appreciate how often you make a point to tell viewers that they should make choices that fit with their lives, not just what's most popular, and then go on to tell us why you've made the choices that you have. It's so tempting to do something because you've seen 10 different videos showing people doing it, when in reality that thing has zero relevance to your own life.
Also doesn’t stop people from still giving their opinions and such.
@@sandravanderleek8569 I agree with you
Completely agree! It's so easy to be armchair know it alls and not be in that person's shoes!
The excitement I get when you post an update on your garden is real.
Hi Becky, I moved to Germany 2 years ago and only discovered your videos late last sumer. I love them and watch them often. It reminds me of all my gardener friends back home and inspires me to make all those American homecooked meals for my husband and our friends. Thank you for sharing your love of cooking and gardening because it has helped this homesick gal feel better.
We also been using this season to improve our property so when spring comes it’ll be what we always wanted, so much work and time but we’re getting there. Blessings ❤
I am so excited for you and Josh. First of all, how blessed you two are to be able to acquire a property like this to enjoy for years. You two are such great planners and stewards of your money to be able to have the things that your heart desires. You work hard and put so much thought into your builds. I am so proud to be a part of your adventure on your homestead.
ditto!!
Congrats on getting the garden beds in so early. I know you were wanting that and it's come true! I suggest the heavier harvests be closer to the large pathway in the middle of the garden so you're not having to lugged those too far. Have fun planning this space!
what a great idea! Potatoes, etc closer to the "road" way!
Living in a rural area, I foolishly thought I could garden without a fence. After the deer. Ate my plants down to the dirt, I put up a temper fence and replanted. I know have my inground garden fenced in. My raised beds are protected by deer netting zip tied to pvc pipe. I strongly recommend you make fencing a priority or you will have nightly deer raids that devastate your vegetable garden. Also they will eat your perennial flowers and bulbs. I had to research deer resistant bushes and flowers and bulbs.
It's insane to spend as much as this will end up costing to not protect it.
Wow, that is going to be a much larger garden and yes planning exactly where and what to plant makes great sense, looking forward to the completion and your new growing garden!
That is going to be a GINORMOUS garden! You guys will need about 6 more kids to eat up all that you’ll be growing in these 20 beds, plus what beds the previous owner left behind!
I love the darker bricks on the edge it highlights the walkway. Definitely looked better with the darker ones.
I loved it too!!!
I know UA-cam was pushing long form for a while but I feel like this video could of been 1/2 the length and 3x more enjoyable if there was less repeating.
Everytime I hear you say 20 beds I think of all the soil that will be needed. We did one bed that was 4x24 and it took SO much soil. Love seeing the progress!
I was blessed to have a neighbor give me composed horse manure to fill the few I have. One option if your near a farmer is to ask them if they have anything like that. Maybe buy of trade something.
@@deblanfair8510 Exactly! I have a friend who runs an alpaca farm & I trade for alpaca poo, which is great b/c it doesn't have to be composted!
Interesting that you did the paver bricks. Here in the plains they become very slippery when wet and icy during winter which I thought you were trying to avoid. Textured cement and "tire rubber" pavers work much better for no slipping. That said it does look great!
My brother put them around his house and my sister in law said if it was again they wouldn't put them in
It’s great to have professionals & they are proud of their work. You are very lucky 👍
Becky, you should follow Garden Answer on UA-cam. They are from Oregon and do all things gardening including seed starting, raised bed and in ground gardening, drip irrigation, annual and perennial planting, evergreen planting, tree planting, fruit tree maintenance, pest and weed control (they like to use natural products), etc. They show you how to do things step by step and what tools they use. They also have two greenhouses. Check out their video titled 15 perennials every garden should have. Maybe they can help inspire you with watering, weed control, the best perennial plants for your area, etc. Thanks for your channel and all you do to inspire and teach us. I can't wait to see how your garden turns out.🍎
I’m so happy for you Becky things are beginning to happen. I can’t wait for the next upload to see what’s happening in the garden and kitchen . Your an amazing lady, wife and mother . Josh is an amazing husband too doing all that he can to make things work better for you both and baby acre xxx🇬🇧
So incredible! Becky I hope you’re having pictures taken of you with your garden throughout the stages of development. That would be so cool afterward to see those pictures, especially if they are the same view. So excited for you!
What a wonderful idea!! This would be a fantastic keepsake fur future generations.
I agree also
Or she can just tune into UA-cam!
I took a TON of pictures as our house was being built (no really, like literally 1000 pictures). This way, if I ever need to know what's behind a wall, I can refer to the pic and know where the electric is, where the plumbing is. We recently had the yard marked for digging so as to not hit utilities and I've taken prob another 15 pics so we know where the gas, cable, water lines are in the yard, too!
I hope you have better luck than I did with cedar raised beds. Mine were 4 x 8 and bowed immediately. The soil ran out the bottom whenever it rained. Pulled out the rotted boards within 5 years and gave up. In my area deer, rabbits, and groundhogs will obliterate a garden overnight unless fenced.
My back yard is under construction too, not nearly as big as yours and I was so proud of myself to get all my seeds started this weekend!! One more week before all my planters are finished and installed. I would feel a little overwhelmed to start seeds for 1280 sq ft if I calculated right. I’m only working with a mere 350 lol. Way to go Becky and Josh!! I’m so excited for you guys.
Your math is correct. Lord, that girl's gonna be busy. I sure hope she doesn't get overwhelmed, I know I would.
@@jenniferl6553 Yes, but I’m really excited to see how she manages 😁

Stadium stairs with flat walkable areas in-between. Everything looks amazing and I just love how detailed your landscapers are. I love the walkway in the front entry and love seeing the chickens but sure they are making a mess everywhere and your choice to not free range them like they are in the moment is something you don't wish to do. Many prayers and blessings going up and out to you, Josh and Baby A. Loving the videos but no time these days to post comments, but with this one I just had to! Thanks for all you do Becky! My favorite thing to do is watch your videos.
Just my opinion... Your garden should be in the same place as the previous owners garden. Its steps from your kitchen, which will make it convenient for planting &harvest.
You're going to be fighting that slope forever & its going to be very hard on your body over time. Just my observation, outside looking in.
She is going to have an herb garden up by her door, and the lettuces will be in the very first row
@@themonkeymama i wonder of she will hire a garden helper, her last garden was even smaller & she didn't have a child...
Your landscapers are doing a wonderful job. Everything looks so good. Can't wait to see everything growing in those beautiful raised beds!
Something you might want to consider if you're not going to terrace the ground on the slope, is to plant some kind of groundcover that can tolerate traffic and help prevent erosion. I'm not sure wood chips or gravel would prevent erosion enough. Erosion will eventually cause your beds to go out of level over time.
You are so awesome I wish I had your energy. I use to have a big garden but now at 73 I live in a small apartment with no garden space or patio so I watch you and enjoy your garden
Keep up the great work blessing to you Josh and baby A
I'm so behind in watching your videos. This is awesome!! I'm so excited for you. Wonderful plan 🎉
Becky! So happy for you. Those raised beds look DIVINE!
The 2 tone walkway bricks looks great with the Stone River.
I finally figured out what your landscape progress videos remind me of! I used to watch This Old House with my dad every weekend, and your series has a very TOH vibe! I just love what you are doing-- basically building every gardener's DREAM garden!
Me too!
How far back are you videos?
The walkway is beautiful 7 you were right in doing it all the same color. It looks great!
I love how expressive your face and eyes are. It makes you feel like I’m right there with you. Also, loving the progress on the garden! It’s looking great!
Please plant native perennial flowers! It is so important to your areas natural biodiversity. Your state should have plenty of resources to find native flowers, shrubs and trees
The number of times I've checked for this video today.....
So glad I get to catch you before my next meeting!
Hi Becky, I live in Eugene and our weather is probably the same. As the summers get hotter and we have months without a drop of rain you might consider more drought tolerant plants for your front entry and save your water bill for veggies etc . I recommend Sedums. They come in many forms, low growing, and spreading along the ground, mid sized and taller flowering types. They are extremely low maintenance, drought tolerant, attractive esp. to bees and come in so many forms.
Sedums are great and come in beautiful colors too!!!
💡 recycling the cinder blocks from the strawberry beds to the inside perimeter of the new beds
Assist in reinforcement of the foundation of the beds before installing the foundation boards
Install on the ends and longest side as you go down the slope
Reduce wear on the bottom boards over time 💭
I love how neat & clean the workmen are.
It's lovely to see how it's all coming together. Your landscapers are amazing! Very excited to see you back in your element among the beds.
A chicken run is the way to go. As a newbie homesteader several years ago I loved having the chickens running everywhere. Until they decided to tear out my flower pots and dig up the garden. They’ve had a large run ever since and are much more safe as well. Everyone is happy 😃
I'M SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!! This reminds me of all the years I homesteaded and so many beautiful memories and a wonderful life. You GO Becky!!
🤯 The size of your garden is almost commercial sized! If I can get in THREE raised beds this year I’ll be great full! So inspired by all you do! Thank you!!! From Virginia (near Jamerelle!)
❤ you videos come out at my kids nap time. Love it lol
I'm worried about how much you're talking about perennials without a deer fence... Deer will make short work of eating your entire garden.
I just love how we get 3 videos about the same timeline 😅 the pantry challenge, the strawberry video and now this one. 😊
The darker border on front walk looked great.
Why not put rocks at the bottom of the raised beds like a stone wall and prevent soil erosion. Just a suggestion.
I love your plans, flexibility and progress! This is so inspiring and I’m excited for your sweet family to reap the fruits and veggies. 🍓 🥕
It’s been a pleasure following your progress. What a great role model you have been and continue to be for women. ✨
the guys are doing great work please let them know
Girl, when you walked around that corner, and i saw those beds, i just smiled.
Becky, I can see how excited you are and that makes me happy too. What a beautiful abundance of food you will start to grow. Grow lots of daffodils, iris, and day lilies that you can later transplant to other areas around the property. It's too cold here but You have motivated me to plan my little garden.
Hope everyone is having a beautiful Tuesday!

We know you don’t have to share as much as you do, but I’ll take this moment to say I’m grateful you do.
Garden season is going to be epic. 😊
The whole raised beds on a hill makes no sense to me. Wouldn’t watering just go down the hill and cause a muddy mess in spots? Why not level it all first? Is it better to be on a hill? Questions! I have so many!
Don't forget to use potting soil to fill all those beds with. Not just regular dirt. Looks really nice!
That's going to be a very long walk all the time to get to the greenhouse
Amazing...I cant even imagine how much these beds are costing you...gonna be beautiful.
