Under Christmas we Finns tend to visit the graves those dear to us. Part of this tradition is setting honor guards on the war hero's graves. Every city, town and village has an armed detachment on attention on the war hero's graves, reminding us that our freedom was due to sacrifice by these men and women. Silently saluting these war heros is part of our way of celebrating Christmas.
Once worked with an Austrian who told me the Finnish ski troopers were the toughest soldiers he'd ever met. He remembered the boots they wore like Saami slipped right into the ski bindings so they could move fast.

@Eddii3 was he a swedish volunteer? if so, he`s got my utmost respect. it is one thing to fight for your own country, but a man fighting for another country, not because of money (mercenaries), but because you feel it is the right thing to do, has got my respect. and i think all finns should respect the swedish volunteers.

@HereIsRussia I just read about the Treaty of Tartu. You are right, except it wasn't Mannerhiem leading attacks, it was independants not supported by Finnish government. Also it was agreed by Russia that Finland borders would be that of the "Grand Duchy of Finland" area. It went on to say the Soviets broke the treaty with their invasion of 30/11/1939. It also mentioned that East Karelians voted to be with Finland, but Soviets rejected the vote. It did confirm that east Karelia was Rus.

I have visited Finland twice and love this country, as well as its stubborn and silent people, who are very honest and pleasant. If I would ever emigrate, it would be to Finland. I can understand the hostility between Russians and Finns, also that they don't necessarily love us Germans...but we all have more in common than separates us....we should never forget that...even if we don't have a sisu...like the Finns ;-)

Also it was agreed by Russia that Finland borders would be that of the "Grand Duchy of Finland" area. It went on to say the Soviets broke the treaty with their invasion of 30/11/1939. It also mentioned that East Karelians voted to be with Finland, but Soviets rejected the vote. It did confirm that east Karelia was Rus.

Minulla on kaksi sodassa ollutta isoisoisää vielä hengissä, toinen on ollut sotavankinakin. Aina itsenäisyyspäivänä muistamme heitä jotenkin, osoittaaksemme kiitollisuutemme ja sen, ettemme unohda. Olen ylpeä heistä, en usko, että monikaan nykysuomalainen kestäisi niitä koettelemuksia, joita he ovat saaneet kestää.
Muistakaamme myös muita sodan kestäneitä, osoittakaamme heille, että arvostamme heidän uhraustaan.

I have visited Finland twice and love this country, as well as its stubborn and silent people, who are very honest and pleasant. If I would ever emigrate, it would be to Finland. I can understand the hostility between Russians and Finns, also that they don't necessarily love us Germans...but we all have more in common than separates us....we should never forget that...even if we don't have a sisu...like the Finns ;-)
@kontsikka my father tell many sad stories what happen there so i know you in this fact.the red cross haha you know what their people say to our proud fathers there-come with us you dont have to be here.so tragic that they tryed to help people escape from their duty in the frontline.some followed them -it make me so angry that some cowards left it and many many years later they brag "i was there in frontline" so your so right about your comment-but we remember ...i love your comment.thank you
