"The way of Siberia and of the cross" is what he said. The reference was obviously to Christs passion, but it of course implies death and going to the grave. I guess that was not simple to translate for some reason but had it been, the translation would have communicated also the implied hope for metaphorical resurrection for the Karelian people.
