We in the United States are very lucky to have all of the Scandinavian nations as our allies. You contribute so much to the world, and for those of us here who prefer a more social structure to our government, we look at your example, and wish it were so here. Our hats are off to you, and to all you have accomplished going back a long way.
And I always love hearing your national hymn played or sung. There are few pieces which tug at the heart strings as hard as that lovely piece.

In 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Finland. By the end of the war, the Soviet Union lost almost 127,000 shoulders, however Finland only lost less than 26000 shoulders. The Soviet arm didn't realize they were not just taking on a smaller countires army. They were confronting a whole nation, Not just the military. Yes. Sisu!
About 170 000 just in the Winter War of the 90's Russian "somewhat" free standards.
Chruchov in the 50's said that soviet casualties were about 1 million.
And if current russia is something to go by,
I wouldn't be suprised.
And it was 1 million dead, and 500-1 mil. wounded on top.

What price for freedom? What price for independence? Ask your grandparents or great grandparents, who fought in the Winter War and the Continuation War.
Let's put it this way... Every year I go to the hero's cemetery, (which can be seen in the video), to say hello to my grandfather. Another grandfather also fought in the Winter War, the Continuation War and the Lapland War. He was wounded in the fighting, a bullet went through the heart. However, he lived to be over 90 years old before he left us. So I know something about the price of the war and what it demanded from the Finns.
The melody and later lyrics of Finlandia do not have anything to do with wars and army. Finlandia symphony (1899; lyrics 1940) is a celebration of our history - fighting for livelihood in the cold climate; working hundreds of years as war slaves for Sweden; receiving freedom as Russian autonomy 1809 with enormous industrial development; receiving independence from V. I. Lenin; and being very close to destroy our independence because of collaboration with A. Hitler with a purpose to destroy USSR. Thus we have gone from problem to another but survived (until now when our international policies again are a major catastrophe).
The lyrics were made after the Winterwar but they do not blame anybody. In the lyrics, slavery and oppression in Finland happened during the Swedish rule - the king frequently ordered Finns to fight against any country (a purpose to kill all the Finns). Russian time was great as an autonomous free society and extensive industrialism led by Russian tsars. As an autonomy Finland did not fit with the USSR and we did not have any fight for independence. Our oligarchs wanted to have their own dictatorship and nominate a German king but they failed.
In WW II the purpose of our oligarchs was to destroy USSR by joining Hitler - Finnish people did not have anything to do with that. Finns and Russians are mainly same fenno-ugric people and good friends.
