the singer for this song, isabella bunny bennett, was dating someone at the time of writing honeybee, who’s name was melissa. she was writing this for her. halfway through writing, melissa broke up with bunny, and then she finished the song. the reason it’s called honeybee is because that’s the pet name for melissa.
Lord Trowa the reason fans of the band refer to bunny as her even before the sex change is because we understand Isabella’s mind has always been female, it’s just respectful
My friend, you have just scratched the surface of the awesomeness that is Steam Powered Giraffe! It was awesome to see you go in to the video sceptical, to enjoying the song and getting into it shortly after the music started! I hope you look into the band more, you might be surprised! Anyway, thank you and have a great day!
Thanks for seeing that transition lol you have an awesome day too bro, I watched your vid of that driving demo and I was on pins and needles lol. I'm gonna watch the bendy game in a second, new subbb
Thanks so much for reacting to the song! You are the first to do so that I have asked. To answer your question about its meaning: the song is actually quite sad if you pay attention to the lyrics. When Rabbit (the singer wearing the red gloves in front) was singing “you didn’t have to say my name” and etc., he was referring to a past encounter. A wonderful woman captured his intense adoration, but then apparently she leaves, or at least is not able to or does not want to be his mate, or “Honeybee”. This is denoted by the lyrical lament, “Hello, goodbye, ‘twas nice to know you, how I find myself without you”. The “hello, goodbye” part that you were confused about was emphasizing how quickly (or perhaps how quickly it appeared to) his dream began, and then ended. When the singer was calling someone crazy, he was actually referring to himself, “Hello, goodbye, I’m rather crazy, and I never thought I was crazy.” It appears to me that what is here being said is that while he never thought he was crazy, he now finds that he must be, because he desired something that he now realizes will never come to fruition-union with her. And so there we have it, the song is actually melancholic; and although the band is a comedic one and nearly all of their songs have a comedic aspect, to my knowledge, this song is not satirical, but simply a bittersweet anecdote. They dress and move like that because they act as fictional personas, specifically automatons, hence the name of their band and their robotic movements. Therefore, all of their songs (that aren’t covers) have some lore or reference to their chosen theme; for example, in this song, there is a phrase in the lyrics that occurs before the first two choruses that states, “Turpentine erase me whole”, which while a serious lament, is obviously alluding to their automatonic nature by the use of the word “turpentine”. Just picture that all of their songs and/or albums exist within a fictional universe. They are intentionally comedic and silly, and that is what drives them. So expect some humor and/or lore in their songs, but be sure to focus on the lyrics too. If you want to listen to more songs by them, I suggest “Brass Goggles” and “Automatonic Electronic Harmonics”, and just as you did here, watch the video for them, because the vocals are occasionally different (and sometimes better) in the video versions of their songs. The first song I listed has a small skit right before the song starts (in the video version of course), and many of their other songs do as well, so be prepared. The Spine, the tall one with silver face paint, has an amazing vocal range. Thanks for the shoutout, though I am actually Christina’s son Darrell Pierce, I just use her account, but that is my bad. Edit: Thank you all for the likes. My passion and love for the perfection of this song is what drove me to write this, and I am joyful that others concur. Looking back I am so happy that I was able to bring this beautifully quaint band to the recognition of another.
LetsJamInfinite I love cleverness as well. They of course, like every other band, have bad songs, or songs that are mediocre, but they have quite a few that are just wonderful.
@@jamfamily4287 The story behind the song itself was that Rabbit had started writing the song for a girlfriend (who he called Honeybee as a nickname), when she broke up with him in the middle of writing it. It's become one of the most popular songs of their repertoire, even some fans playing it at their weddings, despite the original sadness of the writing!
Hey! Just so yall know Rabbit is actually a woman 😁 this is a pretty old video of her pre transition though, so it's easily confusable if you don't already know/haven't seen recent videos of her
I’m really glad you dug that ! They’re in my opinion a band the world needs to know about and why it doesn’t is beyond me. The person singing and presenting as male and was going by Chris Bennett now goes by Isabella bunny bennett and has transitioned she’s so amazing now . Check out the song hold me sometime not quite as pretty as honeybee but I think you’ll dig it! They are a great band!
This song hits me hard. In love with someone who doesn't love you back. "Set me free." Release my soul so I can find love else where. I've been there. Hell, I am there. This song made me a big fan.
I just want to say that watching you listen to the song was adorable. The smile that spread across your face while you were bopping along was priceless.
Theyre a concept band. Theyre trained mimes playing robots. Have their own comic book the put out online about their characters. The silver guy and the lead vocalist in this song are brothers. Well... brother and sister as Rabbit (singer) is male to female trans. They met the other guy at mime school though he has since left the band. Their live shows are a lot of fun as its as much a play as it is a concert. Check out automatonic electronic harmonics or suspender man. Good songs.
I kept wondering about bunny cause I was like so confused cause they said she had a transition but i was like is the transition from female to male or male to female cause I seen bunny now and she looks female but clearly here she looks male.
Everyone has already told you that the song was about the singers love, whom they called honeybee as a nickname, leaving them. But the robotic movements and make up are because they are playing the part of automatons that existed back in the Victorian era (you know the penny arcade things , you put in a penny and little robots performed) that’s their whole aesthetic :)
This was the first song I ever heard from them and it was so different, that it got me hooked on the band. I really enjoy watching the band‘s progression. This style is referred to as Steampunk and I actually ended up discovering other „steampunk“ bands, which are different than SPG, but also really addictive.
I ran into a portion of this song on another music site but after finding the complete video I was both fascinated and surprised about how I really dig this song and the movements & expressions of the band.

I just discovered this band about 2 weeks ago. I've been checking out their other stuff and learning about them. It's pretty awesome. I'm kind of hooked now! This really isn't my genre, but I'm impressed with the lyrics, music and their robotness. I don't think that's a real word. Lol. Very unique sound. I love it! Your reaction was great!
Watching you enjoy this song made me cry, even more than when I listened to it for the first time. Your willing openness to it makes me smile, equally.
New to the song but love it and the video. I stumbled upon this reaction video because of my watching it... Based on your expressions I believe we had the same exact reaction. Love the song now.
This song was my first intro into this band and they have come a long way from this song and video. I love them and have had an amazing time watching them grow and evolve. I would suggest looking at some of their most recent stuff as it is totally different but similar enough that it’s recognizable. ❤️ believe me this is just the tip of the steampunk iceberg. It only gets better from here

The song is actually about the process of falling in then out of love. Rabbit wrote it in the midst of a break up. (They covered it in a Q&A video) I loved your reaction to it, though. Totally genuine.

They mix pan mime, robotics into there concerts, the one playing the guitar, stage name Spine, the singer, stage name bunny (Rabbit), David and Isabella are twins in real life, the song took a left turn when Isabella and her partner split up, hence the hello goodbye, they also have had numerus members that have come and gone, it is very unique, but the music is good

Steam Powered Giraffe does a cover of Diamonds by Rihana. May be check that out. Honeybee is is one of their older songs, and they have so much more out there.
I'd like to see him react to their performance of On Top of the Universe they did in Balboa park. That, and Clockwork Vaudeville are my favorites from back then.
This song is the one that hooked me on SPG but I will tell ya, they only got better year over year. Rabbit's trasition really seemed to help a ton and her performance got way better, but my favorite is Spine. He is incredable.
Talking about struggling with themselves. Identity issues. It really helps to know that bunny is a trans woman. Regardless of their intent I feel that many of the lyrics fit that internal struggle of hers. And it would make sense to write what you know what you feel. It odviously could connect with many people not just trans but it certainly helps with understand the lyrics to put yourself in her shoes
I think they are creative, different. Ive been listening to them for a while. They combine many aspects of music...great band they have evolved ..check them out now.
Dude, I have watched this video so many times yesterday and today (No kidding, over 30 times). I LOVE the song (which typically isn't my style), but the video creeps me tf out!
Anything but creepy lol the sliver one aka the spine he had to go back on stage but he saw me all in steampunk and robot makeup (keep in mind I was 8) he said,"You want a picture..huh?" I had the biggest grin on his face he got down on his knees and wrapped one arm around me as my mom and dad took pictures. Now thinking about gets me choked up I miss the OG band I hope I get to meet the spine one more time (XD sorry that was too deep)
Note to these comments: Bunny is a woman, always has been, always will be. Rabbit is also a woman, even here. There's a whole comic about it on their website.

I’m obsessed with this song. I’m a bit scared of my reaction.
My favorite band 💖💖💖
Freaking love this song, just sad this vibe doesn't carry through to the other songs

Note to these comments: Bunny is a woman, always has been, always will be. Rabbit is also a woman, even here. There's a whole comic about it on their website.
Simply Amazing
I never noticed just how robotic their movements were until seeing the video here on an angled screen.
