Fun Fact! SPG's skill with their animatronic movements comes from a formal education in pantomime! They started out busking in character as steam powered robots, splitting their performances between comedy skits and musical numbers. They had their gimmick right from the start!
Yeah, David and Bunny met Jon and the other original member (Erin played Upgrade) in college. They first performed with their mime class, and decided to keep going just the four of them. You can find videos of them busking on their channel or trekkiebeth.
This was not at all the sound I was expecting, far more melodic and "pretty" than I expected from a robot looking group, but they were also a lot of fun! Thank you Doogs for this new artist!
I loved seeing "Steam Powered Giraffe" pop up in my notifications. I was introduced to them several years back with "Brass Goggles" (which I highly recommend). I am so glad that you loved them!
SPG are an amazing group, Rabbit (the lead) and The Spine (the bassist) are siblings, a couple of years after this video was shot Rabbit underwent gender reassignment surgery. The John (in suspenders) left the group some time later and there is another character now, Zer0. They have their own backstory and lore, as automatons from a different universe, Rabbit's change explained as a chassis change during an upgrade. One of my favourites of theirs is 'Summertime Sadness' (yes, that one) which is primarily The Spine with backing vocals by Rabbit and Zer0
@@AMaineIRLSPG, Abney Park, The Cog is Dead, these are the ones that I listen to, which of course led to Prof E and Mr B, it’s a rabbit hole for certain.
I’m pretty sure Isabella (Rabbit) never got any surgeries, she took just estrogen later down the line and socially transitioned. Isabella herself transitioned not long after this video, a couple years maybe?? But Rabbit, as a character took a lot longer
The fans absolutely dress up as our own fanbots, and I saw quite a few fanbots and cosplays when I went to see them in May! I myself went as my fanbot, Sparky! The shows are always a colorful place
They (Isabella and David) do have a podcast that is temporarily on hold called The Bennettarium where they talk about what the band is up to and answer questions from their fans. If you want to check out newer songs from them I recommend Bad Days on the Horizon with the music video, as well as Eat Your Heart and from their newest band member Shattered Stars
A good number of years ago I got to see them perform live at a huge Steampunk festival (which unfortunately no longer exists). There were people from 8 to 80 singing along with every song!
This San Diego native band has continued to evolve ~ It was great in 2009 ( when I first met them in Balboa Park) and has kept up the momentum ~ Talented folks with a great sense of creativity, humor and concern for their followers ~
Yess! Now you can see what made me fall for this band. My summer playlist is SPG and Epic 😅. Good job remembering the names as well! Thank you so much for the reaction! They are an amazing group that does comedy bits when performing live and I'll definitely get some in front of you but first we need an after transition song from Rabbit. The Spine actually has the largest vocal range and we shall explore that too. I wish I could just throw all of their songs at you at once 😂.
The miming came first . All three were taking mine classes together, in college ~ And while still in college, then they added music to that (about 2009) when miming in Balboa Park, San Diego. And it evolved from there. I love this band! ( oh, and by the way: I’m 70!)
(THIS IS HOW THINGS ARE IN MY MEMORY, SOME FACTS MIGHT BE SLIGHTLY WRONG) theres many interviews and instances of them explaining it but spg started off because bunny and david took a mime class by jerry hager. they ended up taking the class multiple times due to how much they liked it and ended up falling in love with the act of the robot specifically. initially, steam powered giraffe was going to be called people bots, with the steam powered giraffe part being set as a group that were like. the creators of peoplebots, but jerry told them they should change it to just spg. but yeah, if you search for it you can quite easily find interviews with them! :3
big Steam Powered Giraffe fan! I would recommend listening to Lyin' Awake for some of their newer music, but Juju Magic and Hot on the Trail are my personal favs. Nice to see more people learning about them and loved your commentary!
One of the bands on my "I will likely never see them live but really want to" bucketlist. And yes, I would totally do myself up as a robot! (The very first video on my channel was a message from my daughter's robot alter ego, A.L.E.X sys, to a disappointed Tumblr user.) My three favourite SPG songs come from three different eras: _Automatonic_ _Electronic_ _Harmonics_ (with The John), _Malfunction_ (Hatchworth), and _Lyin'_ _Awake_ (Zero). None of them have as good a video as this one, though!
Love how much you appreciated every single aspect, would be very excited to see more SPG reactions from you, they've got loads of drastically different songs. The Spine's vocal range is WILD
OMG so glad you did this!!! It's one of the most beautifully sad songs EVER. I've been obsessed with it since it came out well over a decade ago. For harmonies, you're gonna love their song Automatonic Electronic Harmonics! I hope you get to react to that one too!
fun fact - 10 years ago, the lead singer "rabbit" changed genders and started HRT and is now known and Elenore Bunny Rabbit. And Rabbit and The Spine, the guy playing guitar, are identical twins.
Yay finally made a premiere! This is the first song i ever heard them do & i Love it! I started following them then, thanks for this awesome reaction hope to see more of SPG here love ya
Hey man this is the first time seeing your content and I love how you do things and your room looks sick! Can't wait to watch more of your stuff. Also if you want to react to more SPG stuff I would recommend Brass Goggles and Rust With You.
Love spg :) here's one of my favorite of their skits from when they were busking: ua-cam.com/video/jJ-b8YzsoVI/v-deo.htmlsi=silSbZLrGYH0eeja and heres a great live performance of honeybee: ua-cam.com/video/6beREEhHAP0/v-deo.htmlsi=wO4OegPAwVMliDvK (has some really really good robot pantomime from Rabbit and you can see the Jon doing this weird throat singing thing that sounds like a background instrument but isn't)

Yeah, so it actually happened the other way around: the characters first, then the band.

@@MadelynKontis Its actually amazing how many SPG busking (and small show) videos have been uploaded by people. Like an endless well.
@@saraloking5993 That's pretty much what they said.

Oh yeah I sent DJ links to all the lore of the band when I requested this one. More SPG will definitely be on the way.

From what I know, they can do those sound effects themselves with their mouthes. It’s really cool!
YES!! ALL THE ROBOT SOUNDS ARE LIVE
I absolutely adore SPG!! I highly recommend that you listen to more of them, specifically Brass Goggles and I'll rust with you
This guy has the coolest room
i saw Steam Powered Giraffe and was like OMG yes!!

Her character is still known as Rabbit.
She is known as Isabella Bunny Bennett.
They have a new album out that they made for steamworld heist ii!

I think the influence you were looking for was Barbershop Quartet.
SPG have put out videos showing how they do their makeup so their fans can do it too. You MUST look at more from them. It's a MUST!!
Please do more of their stuff!!!!
15:44 they do they do!:D I’m currently designing one

The Spine & Rabbit are twins in real life.
PLEASE DO MORE SPG!
I Love Steam Powered Giraffe!
You will need your Bass Face Fan for The Spine (silver and black make up with the guitar)
You know what, I never thought of what I’d look like as a robot till now. lol
Probably.. Malfunctioning. 😅
Thanks DJ 😊
Should listen to The Spine's cover of Shine Bright Like A Diamond! (Same channel) it will break you in a Geoff sort of way.
Love that!
