Band BIO:
Steam Powered Giraffe is an American musical project formed in San Diego in 2008, self-described as "a musical act that combines robot pantomime, puppetry, ballet, comedy, projections, and music". Created and led by identical twins David Michael Bennett and Isabella Bunny Bennett, the act combines music and improvisational comedy on-stage, although their studio works focus almost solely on music. Steam Powered Giraffe has its own fictional mythology, with the band members portraying characters both on stage and on record; its fictional universe has been explored via several comic books mainly written and drawn by Isabella Bennett. Although the band underwent several line-up changes, it always focuses primarily on three robot characters (played by the Bennett siblings and a third performer, although the original line-up featured four robots), with several "humans" assisting and performing comedy, music and dancing on stage, and several smaller robots being performed via puppetry or voice acting. To date, they have released six studio albums, a few singles, cover songs, two live albums, several live concert films, provided the soundtrack for the 2015 video game SteamWorld Heist, and released an official single for the 2016 video game Battleborn.
FUN FACTS about band:
- For their first performance in public they called themselves Steam Powered Giraffe Presents: Peoplebots . Later that month they changed their name to just Steam Powered Giraffe
- The members of Steam Powered Giraffe met while taking Theatre Arts at Grossmont College.
Studio Albums:
Album One (2009)
The 2¢ Show (2012)
MK III (2013)
The Vice Quadrant: A Space Opera (2015)
Quintessential (2016)
1896 (2020)

I love how Rabbit reused her line from this song in Transform, to really tie the transformation together.
IT WAS SUCH A SURPRISE HEARING IT IN THERE RHE FIRST TIME AND I LOVE IT
They performed for the San Diego Zoo when I was there once; they started here--I know those cliffs! They are a complete troubadour act and stay in autonomic character throughout with skits and gags through the performance.
That is awesome!
The last line of the song put everything in its place: "I didn't know I was crazy!" A very sad song. At first, the picture bothered me with something (it strained me, distracted me from listening). Then I felt a revelation in the voice of the singers. Everything fell into place in my head. The end, they completely made me sad. Thanks, guys, for the reaction. I was once again convinced that the first look at the subject is not always correct. A beautiful song. A sad song.
👍
Aaww it isn't meant to be a sad song. It is a love song. Be happy 🥲
@@dicodec I’m pretty sure it’s a song about a lost love iirc
Yeah this song was made because the lead singers fiancé/wife left and they called them honeybee
@@dicodec Tonnly rabbits songs got much happyer once she completed her upgrade (Rabbit the performer in the middle is a trans woman and this was shot 2 years before her transition)
I'll admit I cried the first time I heard this. The lyrics are so raw and the harmonies are just so tight.
So true. Such a great song ❤
I cry every timeeeee lol just because of literally how beautiful it is sonicallyyy also the last couple of I never thought I was crazy/ but what do I knows
I cried the hundredth time, it reminds of an old relationship. Also I vibe so much with spine having a similar bass-baritone voice and range.
"Are you ok Joey?" Um... no Joey is not ok LOL
Joey has left the chat.... haha 😂
Joey.exe has stopped responding
I met them in 2010 in balboa Park. Before getting their music published they were street performers. Its mostly why their robot mannerisms are on point, they were out there miming for food money.
They have made so much music over the years now. Definitely check out any of their other songs too.
This is my second favorite song by them. Their best, in my humble opinion, is Automatomic Electronic Harmonic. The same style of vocal harmonies, but it's more upbeat and includes more instrumentation.
Oh dope! Definitely gonna have the check that one out next.
Listen to their Diamonds Cover. It’s the best version of my hat song in my opinion
Yes I agree with all opinions. Listen to Hold Me, Bunny goes up two octaves.
Fire Fire will always be my favorite
I adore this band so much. Isabella's lead vocals on this are just gorgeous and relaxing as hell, but omg the harmonies on top
This song was amazing! We definitely need to hear more of them. What are some good picks?
@@dicodec automatonic electronic harmonics, on top of the universe, hot on the trail, and lying awake are all good songs. This band is amazing.
Also Fart Patrol.
@@dicodec Scary World
@@qrowstarkmaiven they do have a wild sense of humor, love them sm
The amazing harmonies is an aspect that stays consistent through most of their group songs, even when they change band-members. Seriously, I love their songs so much. T_T Highly recommend! It was such a joy seeing someone discover them for the first time. :D
It was great and those harmonies really are chilling and beautiful. Loved this song as well as "Hot On The Trail" which we reacted to on our other channel.
A very beautiful, sad confession song. Without a picture, it would not be so dreary. We are all a little crazy, and we also don't know about it. Thanks for your reaction. For me, this is a new experience of perception.
A beautiful song indeed. It's not a sad song though. It is all about love ❤
@@dicodecIt doesn't sound like it but it is indeed a sad song. Bunny said that yes, it is a love song, but about the one you love leaving you.
My 23 year old son has been a fan since he was 12 ! We have every CD and he has seen them play with his best friend in 3 States! 😊
IM SO JEALOUS OH MY GODHSHJDD
Nice reaction. I randomly got one of their songs put on my discover weekly on Spotify last year. Listened to the whole discography that day. Love their stuff, even if you don't react to it listen to more of their stuff you won't regret it
We are doing more!
Your reaction is absolutely the best for this song. First time hearing is magical
It's amazing noticing the difference in how men react to this song vs women. Women generally get crazy delighted and charmed, and men get transfixed, like they're....remembering....it's beautiful....
as a nonbinary person its both for me /hj
@@CaptainLightner good for you
I thought I had grown immune to how soul crushingly sad this song is, but this reaction has me tearing up all over again, haha.
A 180 in terms of the music and energy would be their live video for Brass Goggles. It's got fantastic mixing, the Spine gets to show off his range, and Rabbit is full chaotic energy mode
Such beautiful music and such a sad story.I have mixed feelings. I’m not surprised that you too were embarrassed at some moment.
Loved all of it
Wow..I am impressed you managed to edit that into a watchable, youtube safe Video..good job!
Also I really like how they make the note on "bee" buzz just through the harmonies, without singing it buzzy..(if that makes any sense)
Alan is the Lord of editing now haha. I see what you mean like using the panning effect to emulate a bee buzzing around.....I think?
@@dicodec Theresa knows what she is talking about, she is Theresa Bee after all
Dad joke quota of the day fulfill, see you tomorrow
I want more, I run on dad jokes. -Alan
Wrong, Its not "them" Its The Jon making that "Bee Buzz" its Called a Polyharmonic Overtone. If you watch Live shows from 2013 to now you'd notice it's missing. But if you watch live shows from 2010-2012 it is present.
They never swear so it's always you tube safe....
It feels good seeing people who appreciate good music appreciate my fav band
They are so dope. Fell in love with this song and the following one we reacted to.
I deeply regret that I had not heard of, or listened to Steam Powered Giraffe before. Thank you for sharing them. So amazing a sound and as an added bonus, it turns out this was shot only blocks from where I used to live in San Diego!! Great reaction!
I love singing this song! alan
I cry every time I hear this song. One of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever.
Such a beautiful, beautiful, bittersweet song. And fabulous reactions from you guys.. thank you!
I think this is the best song I ever heard. There’s something elemental. Yet it’s applied to every detail at every level
The broken umbrella skeleton is such a perfect metaphor for this song.
It sounded very beautiful! Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much for checking us out.
@@dicodec Their cover of Diamonds by Rhianna really showcases the vocal talent of The Spine (the tall robot).
I love your reaction to this! They are truly amazing and wonderful people. If you get a chance check out some of their newer stuff. My personal favorite video is Hot On The Trail.
Thanks! They do seem like some good folks for sure. We are really looking forward to hearing more as well.
They aren't the same anymore sorry. I listen to their older music.
I think alot of the harmonies originate with the twins. They naturally mesh.
And if you haven't listened to Brass Goggles you've missed a wonderful opportunity to grin like an idiot. Great fun
i love the jons movements so much hes insaneee
There's a real nice live performance of this song (by them sans costumes) that includes a very tasteful and equally sublime and exquisite instrumental accompaniment. Look for it.
GOD i love their harmonies
The reason they're so good at the automaton act is that they all received professional training as mimes
I love this band
They're fantastic
I simply agree with all of your interpretations
THE SPINE/ DAVID MICHAEL BENNET HAS SUCH AMAZINF RANGE HE CAN GO FROM SUPER LOW RO REALLY HIGH ITS AMAZINF
Oh Please you guys should do Fire fire from Steam Powered Giraffe it has the harmonies, but this weir dire circumstance ... it is part of a Space rock opera and a scene where after a rescue attempt one of the ships is sabotaged and the knowing that the crew and people can't do anything to stop it
Fav song from them
This lowkey the magnus opus of their whole band and i have yet to hear another like it.
Rip
honeybee makes me so happy but sad at the same time audhhdjdmdh :''3
I've been a fan of theirs since early days. And everything they have ever produced gives an eargasm👂🏻🎶 💜💜💜
One of my favorite songs by these dorks is definitely 'I don't have a name for it' a song David (The Spine) made for Chelsea and 'shattered stars' by Bryan (Zer0), the newest member of the band.
But, nothing beats Bunny's lovely voice.
She sounds so oddly good now that she's gotten into her new form.
Ah I see very cool!
@@kxl309 Debatable
@@cloversgood_luck9290 is it?
@@kxl309 I mean Everything is Subjective
Sad composition. There's a hopelessness to it. Thanks for the reaction.
This is one of the only songs that make my cry everything I hear it and I don't know why
Totally feel the same way Tyler
Other people probably know this already, but Rabbit wrote this song.
Ah I figured that was the case.
I love this band so much. My favorite song is Sleep Evil Sleep, which is wonderful to listen to when having a hard time. The history and even in universe story of the band and the automatons is fun and interesting. I love the current line up of The Spine, Rabbit, and Zer0.
They're great! Been looking more into them and it's been awesome.
You listen because the harmonies are spot on. Sorry but they are not the same to date. But must listen to Bunny sing Hold Me she goes up two octaves! This song touches the soul!
I figured they had gone through a few line up changes. Still really excited to hear some more stuff. Sounds like a good pick to start. Thanks for the reccomendation
Why am I the only one who isn’t creeped out lol! Rabbit is totally hot in this get up
Great song but I prefer Automatonic Electronic Harmonics.
That one is a dope song too.
Great to see others realizing how freakin great these guys are!
Joey's real fear is his own emotions.
Damn, that one hurt me lol
surprising ro me that the bots are creepy to some people i think theyre just super cool :3
i mean i can see how hatch can be creepy but ya
I don´t know why the f=%$ i`ve never ear this music before and for that i´m deeply grateful to you.
Oh dope! Glad you were able to find something new here. This comment made my day ❤
It has been one of my favorite songs for years. They have truly original character to there music.
Very cool!
@@dicodec I drive taxi in a small college town and I have downloaded the video to my tablet. If the conversation gets to music I will often show the passenger the video as an example of great music they may not have ever heard of.
I've watched and listened to that Honeybee video so many times and it never gets old. That's unusual in itself. They had the winning formula right there. But sadly, IMHO, they have deviated from it greatly (especially Rabbit for obvious reasons). Really wish they didn't go through such a change in lineup, appearance, and serious melodies such as this song. Not into the goofy stuff they put out, songs about farting, etc. So this one song is what I'd call a 'one hit wonder'. If someone wants to transform, that's their prerogative. Sadly this version of Rabbit was pretty cool IMO, visually (physically and costume). Bummed that "the Jon" moved on. Sam Luke as "Hatchworth" was pretty cool as well. Oh well, can still enjoy this masterpiece.
Three musicians having sound-gasms. Soo cool. Good to know that I'm not the only one who had similar sound-gasms listening to SPG :)
Absolutely! Definitely eargasmic haha
"i could fall asleep listening to this"
I HAVE and it's a very pleasent way to fall asleep too
Heck yes! ❤
@@dicodec Also found out the band formed cause all them were in the same Mime class wich exsplains why the movements they doo are so solid (save rabbit and spine who are actually twins)
A lot more people are afraid of robots than I thought. I always think they're cool.
Right! Most people I've showed it to didn't like the robot aspect either. I also thought that was really cool. -Eric
Uncanny Valley effect.
Oh and if you think THIS one is sad, try their song Turn Back The Clock
So down thanks for the reccomendation
I love watching people cry the first time they hear SPG lol
❤🥲
Perfect reaction
First time i watched this video i watched or listened to this song literally 50 times.
You should listen to brass goggles
I’ve been sharing this song with only my best friends for years.
Oh awesome! It is a great song
Great song and GREAT reaction. So honest...describing your cognitive dissonance.
So, the big question... will you cover more of their songs? The band composition's changed a few times since this video, and it's a different, but still wonderful, experience.
For teh third album, you can watch "Catch Hatch Fever" live at teh La Jolla Playhouse in Sand Deigo fo that iteration of the band.
For the 5th, you can use "I don't have a name for it" or "Malfunction".
For teh 6th, we have another line-up change, with "Shattered Stars".
Excellent group!
Absolutely. We've already done a couple more of their songs over on our Live Channel.
ua-cam.com/users/DicodecLive
Its a beautiful song.
Humor me for a second. As soon as I read the lyrics I felt like the environment didn't serve their performance good enough. With their amazing robotic/muppet style. This would've done better if they were all on a stage in front of the audience and the main singer started to tell the story of how he became conscious or alive once he saw the smile of that lady. The desire to be liberated so he could be with her. Where at the end of the music shows the lady leaving as the only audience who was watching the performance or at least the only person the singer sees in his world until she leaves him alone and he has to live with that lonely pain.
Something in the tones telling me this has more like a circus vibes but a sad one. Like the concept of the clown making everyone enjoy their time but he is sad deep inside.
I definitely hear that
This was really their first song that blew up and got them a lot of attention after starting out as a mime troupe doing shows on the beaches of San Diego. Their later stuff has much more production value put into it.
most beautiful thing I've ever heard❤️
Right! Such a beautiful song ❤
I'm glad to hear you love this song fun fact is considered a break up song
PLEASLE PLEASE IF YOU HAVENT LISTEN TO WIRED WRONG ITS SO GOOD AND MAKES ME CRY EVERY TIME. AS AN AUTISTIC MENTALLY ILL TRANS PWRSON IT HITS SSOSO HADD. ALSO SPEAKING OF ALSO LISTEN TO MALFUNCTION AND TRANSFORM, BUNNY IS AMAZING AND I LOVE RABBIT SO MUCH
Awesome 😎
Love it's 🎤💋🎸🥁🎶👍
❤✌
Same. We loved this one as well❤
Lol y'all published to this about the same time I first listened to them, and I've listened to almost nothing else since
Heck yes nice!
Can you say “ear hole” one more time? That’d make it an even two hundred.
Let's make it 300
If you want to see the funny side of them check out their Walter Robotics Rap video. It's pretty fun. Plus it ties into their Lore a bit
Oh nice! Definitely have to check it out
It is real music.
Yes ,crazy but so good 👌👌👌👌👌❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍
Loved this one ❤❤❤
It's called automatonophobia
Woah
The band members portray their personas as robots.
Ah I see, thanks gor clearing that up
If you hear the the words to the song it is sooooo sad of s song
react to rainych ran kiss me more
The way they move remind me of New World Order,
Interesting 🤔
@@dicodec yep, they have similar vibe,
@@dicodec anyway, Miku just dropped her second song for her Cluppo thing,
sorry im normal about this band
Stop pausing and comment at the end, annoying.
No thanks 🙂↔️
