The worst thing about CGI is that people can only notice it when it is bad. It reminds me of all those "This block buster has awful CGI!!" videos and they take the one sort of janky scene from the film and then ignore every other moment that works fine to perfectly.
One thing that personally annoyed me is when Trigun Stampede was announced and it looked great, yet people everywhere wouldn't stop spamming about it looking awful, comparing it to Berserk, saying it "ruins" the original etc.
Stampede design is awful not cg itself. Trigun is a sci fi western, dirty, vicious and dry, literally, we talking a desert planet where people drink alcohol more than actual water bc it's so hard to come by. Characters are dirty, wearing sturdy clothes that either help withstand the heat or make large stone buildings with thick walls to escape it. And yet we have almost squeaky clean millennial with plot contradictory changes in his looks like his arm and his goddamn hairstyle and location that also look way less like a trigun and more like regular take on genre. Vash resemble all that humanity lost due to crashing on this planet, hundreds of years came by and almost all technology is lost. Yes it's a prequel, but prequel to what exactly? It would be much more interesting to see him loosing his arm and the destructive consequences of his brother messing with their bodies, to set up the stakes for a reboot or whatever, and yet it seems that they just rehashing the same story but making it worse. And overall it looks like a regular sci fi completely missing the point and beauty of the original that is what mostly piss fans of the original both manga and anime adaptation. And well 3d in it is rather choppy, that's why i didn't liked it in Doeohedoro. When you animate in 2d you space frames in such a way to show a fluid picture, but with 3d it looks like a game that is too much for a hardware to render. Visually it looks good, but in motion meh.
I bet with the new Trash Taste podcast episode, people will change their opinion cause "why not?" I can clearly see the hypocrisy of the human kind and just agree with the majority.
Idk I have a problem with the style. Not the the cgi or the simplification. I think the styles clash not crazy but don't fit for the mood they are setting. The backgrounds has really heavy detail or paint like and even visuals that remind me of alot of techniques used in 3d loops, especially the op. Its not necessarily bad but the characters do overly stick out and don't blend into the environment. This isn't the cgi fault more art direction. Also, specifically, the characters look too perfect or clean for the story they are going for. It's not that's its "bad" but kinda like the tokyo ghoul remake where they made the protagonist extremely pretty boy but the art style doesn't match the setting where he is basically a zombie. The art direction doesn't match the tone of the manga or setting. 3d can be very versatile as well in style. In border lands, they create a gritty atmosphere and the characters feel like they actually exist in that world. That they are part of it. Wolf among us with the noir style does this too. All of these in 3d. I'm avoiding to use newer examples since I don't wanna compare trigun to arcane or spiderverse because it's redundant. Also guilty gear, not that it's easy to do but showed amazing style direction.

This is something that I always wanted to hear someone say. It always irks me when someone says that it's not hand drawn animation just because it was made on a Wacom tablet instead of paper. Also yeah, I find it funny that the gradient that they applied for metal in OPM S2 is atrocious to the point where it actually looks like CGI even though it isn't while the actual CG for the centipede looks 2D.
wow I just realized that Mob Psycho S2 opening bg blended real life with the animation itself. Honestly a pretty good video, I've always disagreed with the whole CGI bad thing. It always baffled me how everyone didn't notice that the background in most of their favorite anime uses CGI, then starts calling any other shows bad just because they saw CGI in them. Plus when CGI is done right in anime, it looks more lively than your normal average anime
You deserve more attentions on your content cause I've been binge watching all your videos and man, I'm able to learn more from having all these important information like these in a video format. It's unfortunate that there's so much misinformation around anime production and animation that some are only made to just hate and hurt it. Absolutely amazing video bro. Have you watched the Trigun: Stampede trailer from Orange? Couple of months ago I saw some reactions to the trailer, and the only things people couldn't stop complaining about are the character designs and CG (all of it in general). The character design complain I understand, but the complains about CG was just stupid. You have some people who have absolutely no knowledge talking about how cheap the show looked, even tough CG anime is way more costly. Some complain the CG models don't move well, but it was clear from the footage the Orange incorporated quite a lot 2d with the CG stuff. Its genuinely baffling to me that when people with no clue of the process of animation or even research on the studio or staff talk shit out of their ass and people still eat it up. I really videos like yours spread further so that they can understand just a little bit.
The problem with cgi in anime is how the industry began to utilize it when it reached the level that it could be used in production. Most studio execs don't really see cgi as something that can elevate an anime's animation quality but rather to them its a shortcut, something that can cut costs and time. Of course there are exceptions like ufotable and mappa who have perfected the use of cgi in anime.
I will say I do work with 3d models and can disipher when they are implemented in anime, sometimes its well done, and sometimes it's not. I think that people jump the gun too much and immediately call it bad, especially when there aren't any 3d models involved. I think it comes off as oblivious and negative for the sake of being negative. I haven't seen opm s2 yet, but from what I saw, the 3d models looks great, and as you stated, the smears really added to it. The same goes for chainsaw, man. I really liked the 3d shots for the most part. Anyways, rant over. I hope this information reached a few people.
I've read the manga and I know those detractors are going to drool over Chainsaw man in a few weeks. I hope media literacy becomes more ubiquitous as time goes on

Amazing video . I stopped engaging with most anime content because I feel its stressful most of the time and eh after 50ish of them , animes don't interest me anymore . One animation isn't inferior to another. Beastars and Honey and Clover used stop motion in their openings. Watercolor animation also happens in Beastars. Motion graphics happens in Uncle from Another World and many anime that uses gaming elements. Gravitation and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei even used live action in an anime.
I just wanted to say that I'm glad UA-cam recommended your video to me because I learned so much about animation that I didn't know before. Like how compositing is different from 3D models and that Mob Psycho used paint on glass, and sand animation (which I didn't even know were things). Mob psycho did used cgi layout in season 2 ep 7 which was for a perplexed camera movements but it was blended so well that people really can’t figure it out .
my favorite forground animation is in JOJO, the have such good 3d model and shading it makes 3d animation look even better than hand drawn, AND ESPECIALLY, cgi on the stand holy! since stands are made to look like something that is surreal the CGI make it such a powerful thing to look at
Cgi in anime is best use when it's not use as a quick way to finishes rushed projects like alot of anime that are rush for some manga end hype. If cgi is use more offence like studio orange or ufotable then it will be less dislike.
I also don't mind CGI. CGI can be look great. But most what we get are not good. People still choose to not watch them even though they have good CGI. Example, Artiswitch. I want to see them benefit the CGI not just for cut costs. Love Love series performances is the good example that they benefit the CGI. Example, Tiny Stars and Future Parade performances. There are article few years ago about anime studio depends too much on CGI. Comment from I.G, Bones and Sunrise studio. It's hard to find new animators that can do 2D object, vehicles, monster and mech. The reason why they use CGI mech in Gundam The Origin is they can't find animators that can do 2D mech. Right now, Sunrise studio teach new animators to do 2D mech. Kyoukai Senki is one of the shows they use for teach them. A lot of people say about demon slayer fight scenes but I more impressed see good 2d mech. Because 2d mech is hard to animated.

Majority anime fans come across as childish when they scream anti cgi or hate English dubs even when they're amazing. Like chill out, you can't even understand and read subs anyways
cgi backgrounds can create some of the most unique scenes (in action shows) cause you have full control of the camera and you wont need to do background animation. i do love myself some bg animation but its quite rare nowadays

I feel like a lot of the dislike for cgi is normal/fine. People try to deflect by bringing up backgrounds or fully 3d animated shows ("oMg are you saying frozen and arcane are bad because its 3d!?!?!"). Sure, if you think computer generated 3d animation as an artform should not exist, that's a bit crazy. But if you just look at the general idea of what people are saying with a charitable view, I don't think the distaste for cgi foreground animation is all that crazy.
Imo, cgi in foreground is definitely a bit weird for me but I don't really care much as long as the rest of the show looks good. Especially if it has great (usually 2d) sakuga. I could care less if a car in a show is 3d when that show is also giving me some of the most breathtaking fight scenes I have ever seen. But if a really hype, climactic fight in a show gets delegated to cgi, then yeah, I'm probably gonna be disappointed that that happened. And yes, obviously if that were to happen, it would be because they don't have enough time/resources to make it good in 2d. So cgi was probably the best option. But that is also just a silly deflection imo. It's like you can't express distaste in anything because someone will say "it is literally impossible for it to be better. They only had 12 days and 37 dollars to animate it, while also being deprived of all food sources. Therefore, you should reach your hand into your brain and physically change your opinion on the animation, otherwise you are a bad person who hates animators."

I think I'm in the minority when I say that background art and animation matters to me just as much as foreground animation. An example where that factored in my enjoyment of a show was with My Dress Up Darling. While the character designs and animation were a joy to witness, the backgrounds looked like they were from ye average dating sim. Lifeless and bland. But obviously this is due to animators prioritising the foreground more, like you said.

In this video I never talked about art direction at all, I was talking exclusively about moving backgrounds for dynamic shots, which is either done in 2D by an animator or in CGI by the 3D studio, not by background artists.

When the 2 were going to the mall (the people in the background weren't animated at all, which made the scene feel dead and empty.) and 2. Shots of Gojo's garden, which looked like the most generic garden ever. I guess its not to do with art, but more so the lack of background details, really. Sorry if you misunderstood.
Honestly based video, I've had so many people squash cgi, and I just try and try to explain to them that not only is it NECESSARY for budget reasons, but without it, anime as we know it would be different. Even 10-15 years ago when we had the toppest of tier shows that aren't just tropes and elements of other shows quickly and quickly slapped together, many anime that were successful simply wouldn't have been without the help of cgi. The most annoying thing is that when it comes to these people, is that animation is not everything, if anything its one of the least important elements for a show to actually catch you. That is probably arguable for theatrical releases. Also for adaptive media, since the characters and story are written up, designed thoroughly and seem to be successful already. The whole point is kinda that you have the flashy animation an musical composition, and they have all the storyboarding and really creative work already done that will make or break the show. So I kinda understand why people can be so focused on it, but I bet you 90% of people that get butthurt wouldn't even understand what an adaptation is. Also for all the people sucking off mob psycho, everything about that show besides the animation is MID, so CHILL, all they did was announce that they are doing something they already do for publicity, the animation will be just like other seasons. This is something that I always wanted to hear someone say. It always irks me when someone says that it's not hand drawn animation just because it was made on a Wacom tablet instead of paper. Also yeah, I find it funny that the gradient that they applied for metal in OPM S2 is atrocious to the point where it actually looks like CGI even though it isn't while the actual CG for the centipede looks 2D.
wow I just realized that Mob Psycho S2 opening bg blended real life with the animation itself. Honestly a pretty good video, I've always disagreed with the whole CGI bad thing. It always baffled me how everyone didn't notice that the background in most of their favorite anime uses CGI, then starts calling any other shows bad just because they saw CGI in them. Plus when CGI is done right in anime, it looks more lively than your normal average anime
The opening for the Persona 5 game by IG also used the footage from a highway and composited it into the actual animation

Absolutely amazing video bro. Have you watched the Trigun: Stampede trailer from Orange? Couple of months ago I saw some reactions to the trailer, and the only things people couldn't stop complaining about are the character designs and CG (all of it in general). The character design complain I understand, but the complains about CG was just stupid. You have some people who have absolutely no knowledge talking about how cheap the show looked, even tough CG anime is way more costly. Some complain the CG models don't move well, but it was clear from the footage the Orange incorporated quite a lot 2d with the CG stuff. Its genuinely baffling to me that when people with no clue of the process of animation or even research on the studio or staff talk shit out of their ass and people still eat it up. I really videos like yours spread further so that they can understand just a little bit.
The problem with cgi in anime is how the industry began to utilize it when it reached the level that it could be used in production. Most studio execs don't really see cgi as something that can elevate an anime's animation quality but rather to them its a shortcut, something that can cut costs and time. Of course there are exceptions like ufotable and mappa who have perfected the use of cgi in anime.
I will say I do work with 3d models and can disipher when they are implemented in anime, sometimes its well done, and sometimes it's not. I think that people jump the gun too much and immediately call it bad, especially when there aren't any 3d models involved. I think it comes off as oblivious and negative for the sake of being negative. I haven't seen opm s2 yet, but from what I saw, the 3d models looks great, and as you stated, the smears really added to it. The same goes for chainsaw, man. I really liked the 3d shots for the most part. Anyways, rant over. I hope this information reached a few people.

Motion graphics happens in Uncle from Another World and many anime that uses gaming elements.
Gravitation and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei even used live action in an anime.

Mob psycho did used cgi layout in season 2 ep 7 which was for a perplexed camera movements but it was blended so well that people really can’t figure it out .

my favorite forground animation is in JOJO, the have such good 3d model and shading it makes 3d animation look even better than hand drawn, AND ESPECIALLY, cgi on the stand holy! since stands are made to look like something that is surreal the CGI make it such a powerful thing to look at

Cgi in anime is best use when it's not use as a quick way to finishes rushed projects like alot of anime that are rush for some manga end hype. If cgi is use more offence like studio orange or ufotable then it will be less dislike.
I also don't mind CGI. CGI can be look great. But most what we get are not good. People still choose to not watch them even though they have good CGI. Example, Artiswitch. I want to see them benefit the CGI not just for cut costs. Love Love series performances is the good example that they benefit the CGI. Example, Tiny Stars and Future Parade performances.
There are article few years ago about anime studio depends too much on CGI. Comment from I.G, Bones and Sunrise studio. It's hard to find new animators that can do 2D object, vehicles, monster and mech. The reason why they use CGI mech in Gundam The Origin is they can't find animators that can do 2D mech. Right now, Sunrise studio teach new animators to do 2D mech. Kyoukai Senki is one of the shows they use for teach them. A lot of people say about demon slayer fight scenes but I more impressed see good 2d mech. Because 2d mech is hard to animated.

cgi backgrounds can create some of the most unique scenes (in action shows) cause you have full control of the camera and you wont need to do background animation. i do love myself some bg animation but its quite rare nowadays

I feel like a lot of the dislike for cgi is normal/fine. People try to deflect by bringing up backgrounds or fully 3d animated shows ("oMg are you saying frozen and arcane are bad because its 3d!?!?!"). Sure, if you think computer generated 3d animation as an artform should not exist, that's a bit crazy. But if you just look at the general idea of what people are saying with a charitable view, I don't think the distaste for cgi foreground animation is all that crazy.
Imo, cgi in foreground is definitely a bit weird for me but I don't really care much as long as the rest of the show looks good. Especially if it has great (usually 2d) sakuga. I could care less if a car in a show is 3d when that show is also giving me some of the most breathtaking fight scenes I have ever seen. But if a really hype, climactic fight in a show gets delegated to cgi, then yeah, I'm probably gonna be disappointed that that happened. And yes, obviously if that were to happen, it would be because they don't have enough time/resources to make it good in 2d. So cgi was probably the best option. But that is also just a silly deflection imo. It's like you can't express distaste in anything because someone will say "it is literally impossible for it to be better. They only had 12 days and 37 dollars to animate it, while also being deprived of all food sources. Therefore, you should reach your hand into your brain and physically change your opinion on the animation, otherwise you are a bad person who hates animators."

I know people like certain cgi animation, and some don't, cuz we all have different opinions. But saying you don't like it gets so much pushback. People routinely say these people are lying about disliking it, trying to "pull down" a studio, or that 3d animation looks exactly like 2d so anyone who says they notice cgi is lying. I understand many people are extremely rude about how they express their distaste. And people who generally dislike cgi will say a comparatively good implementation of 3d is low quality, which is nonsensical and they just dislike 3d regardless. I think I'm in the minority when I say that background art and animation matters to me just as much as foreground animation. An example where that factored in my enjoyment of a show was with My Dress Up Darling. While the character designs and animation were a joy to witness, the backgrounds looked like they were from ye average dating sim. Lifeless and bland. But obviously this is due to animators prioritising the foreground more, like you said.

This is my analysis video of my dress up darling episode 8. At 5:36 and 6:11 I talk about the beautiful art direction. It's not the best in class, but it's definitely a couple of tiers above average.
"Animators prioritising the foreground" is not something that happens, since animators don't even have a say in the art direction. Background art is usually outsourced to a different studio.
In this video I never talked about art direction at all, I was talking exclusively about moving backgrounds for dynamic shots, which is either done in 2D by an animator or in CGI by the 3D studio, not by background artists.
@@-MankoMan I may not be knowledgeable in this stuff, but two moments I didn't like MDUD's backgrounds was 1. When the 2 were going to the mall (the people in the background weren't animated at all, which made the scene feel dead and empty.) and 2. Shots of Gojo's garden, which looked like the most generic garden ever.

Honestly based video, I've had so many people squash cgi, and I just try and try to explain to them that not only is it NECESSARY for budget reasons, but without it, anime as we know it would be different. Even 10-15 years ago when we had the toppest of tier shows that aren't just tropes and elements of other shows quickly and quickly slapped together, many anime that were successful simply wouldn't have been without the help of cgi.
The most annoying thing is that when it comes to these people, is that animation is not everything, if anything its one of the least important elements for a show to actually catch you. That is probably arguable for theatrical releases. Also for adaptive media, since the characters and story are written up, designed thoroughly and seem to be successful already. The whole point is kinda that you have the flashy animation an musical composition, and they have all the storyboarding and really creative work already done that will make or break the show. So I kinda understand why people can be so focused on it, but I bet you 90% of people that get butthurt wouldn't even understand what an adaptation is.
