The Gary Moore episode was so amazing. He was wailing with the band each time they went to commercial. Then Dave goes,” is that a magic guitar Paul”, He was fantastic
The crazy thing about Eddie was not only his stellar guitar playing, but it just looked so easy for him playing while running dancing and laughing, clearly he enjoyed playing.
Times like these are when we miss Eddie the most--blazing! 'Panama' as an instrumental?! Paul's keys took over the lead vocals...and it worked! Timeless musical mastery. 🙏🏻
@sticksman1979 glad that you said that. What happened to the people in this world? Did the internet really do all of this to people? Music is non existent, style gone, some chicks wanna be dudes🤦🏻♂️ Everything is upside down. You watch this and remember how things use to be. Sad....
I remember when musicians actually structured a song. Now it's mostly power chords waiting for an affects laden attempt at a solo. And the band looked like they were having a blast!
Paul and bandmates were living a dream (to be able to play with one of the guitar greats of all time, while he was still in his prime). You can see it was a lot less significant for Ed, but he was polite and gave the band respect and turned the focus back to Paul Schaffer at the end of the song, pointing his hand to him for the applause. That was a humble gesture that not many other rock lead guitarists would've done back at that time.
@@le_th_ I wish i was the bass player on that night with Eddie, no wonder that guy was tripping ! My head would've been exploding while trying to keep the bass part tight with the band lol. Paul and the boys experienced something they'll NEVER forget as long as they live
Eddie is just so relaxed, the other dudes are really working hard and appear a little nervous playing next to such an extraordinary talent. Imagine the drummer, going ok - but trying to be as good as Alex. Tough gig that one.
Alex also played with a double bass drum set up with a 1/2 to full beat delay at times which gave him a listening to advantage. Some drummers consider it cheating. This drummer in Pauls band did a great job filling in with a single bass!

Rest in peace Ed... You made me want to play music... forever grateful!...
I EDWARD VANHALEN AND Valerie Vanhalen 6⁶
Play music , hear Eddie, decided to play harder and have more fun. RIP miss you dude !!!!
Oh me . . I'd forgotten how terribly I missed David Letterman and crew. Oh me . . .Great entertainer.
I learned to play guitar that summer. I was 15 going-on 16 & remember watching this live. ☮️
David Letterman...such a richard!! Eddie and Valerie were, and still are, the best couple ever!
Fake couple for years
Eddie Van Halen!!.... Will be often emulated.. But never Duplicated!! One of the ultimate Immortals... His music will live on, and far Beyond, himself. Still mourning you my friend. ⚡🎸
WOW...the 2 of them together, GREAT CHEMISTRY! I've seen him perform twice, back in 81 and 16...like fine wine, he got better with age and you can tell he LOVED what he did. Bless you Ed, you are so missed.
This must of been the highlight of these men's lives. Can you imagine jamming with Eddie? They are all having a great time.
Paul is killing it on that melody playing the lyrics and nailing it just getting down
The Gary Moore episode was so amazing. He was wailing with the band each time they went to commercial. Then Dave goes,” is that a magic guitar Paul”, He was fantastic
Eddie and Valerie resembled each other: like a brother and sister!
The crazy thing about Eddie was not only his stellar guitar playing, but it just looked so easy for him playing while running dancing and laughing, clearly he enjoyed playing.
Vallarie seems so real, and down to earth. RIP Eddie.
That's because she is...
Times like these are when we miss Eddie the most--blazing! 'Panama' as an instrumental?! Paul's keys took over the lead vocals...and it worked! Timeless musical mastery. 🙏🏻
What a time to be alive.
He truly is King Edward his presence his talent n of course that infectious smile is greatly missed r.i.p. EVH!!!
never thought id be an old dude missing the days gone by. Love these memories.. Eddie was great. As is youth
As much as EVH is known for his lead guitar solos, his ROCK SOLID RHYTHM is easily overlooked.
He's chill, can chat and play at the same time. Effortless and fantastic!
I think that drummer plays with a pretty big band now...
@@riptidesurf Which band?

I love how Eddie was always smiling and letting other play his songs with him. Just jammin' around. Good times man!
Eddie and Paul just look at each other and think to themselves, “fuck that dude can play.“
In 1980 this smiling guy with the stripped overalls and guitar 🎸 looking like he was having the time of his life was living as a poster on my wall 🧱. 1981my dad said ok here's your 1rst guitar! I wanted 🥁🛢️ but ...no way he said! 🎸.....I spent 1000s of hours skipping needles across van Halen records to try to learn his magic touch...I wanted to be that happy guy in the poster since I was 12 years old....I Am devastated a guy who made so so many happy is gone to soon! With his genius playing!! Thanks to you Eddie I am still practicing 41 YEARS LATER! .....THANK YOU FOR THE GUITAR LESSONS I NEVER GOT....All I know, everyone I knew smiled everytime they heard you play guitar! The 🌎 became a sadder version when they took you from us! Miss you much Evh! You'll live forever in my 🌎. Rip
Back when late night TV and talented people were synonymous. Today Pop TV/Music is utter trash.
The "Back When" trope rears its ugly head, once again.
@@ThomasFromTN Haha yeah but sometimes it just so happens to hit the mark 😎🤘
So true , I graduated from high school that year and I don't remember this particular episode, but I bet I watched it with my friends , about 3 or 4 of us would watch it every night at my house
Pretty much, WAP comes to mind immediately
And Letterman was actual funny back then, then he got political and nasty
Aren't they the cutest, most honest little couple you ever saw?! OH my heart! Love them to pieces!
one of the greatest guitarists in the world
Not one of. THE.
I can't believe it! I attended this show... the only time I attended Letterman. I spent the morning at Princeton, interviewing a professor who had won an Oscar (was on his shelf). I was running late to get to Manhattan, so I abandoned a rental car SOMEWHERE in the city and ran to the studio. Eddie was on a slow burn when Valerie and Paul discussed their date.
Ed is doing great but Paul Shaffer is just nailing the vocal part with the keys. It like a hopped up version of Booker T & the M.G.'s Hell YES !
It was nice of Letterman to give Eddie a chance for stardom. Thanks for the video .
Ain't it awsome how you can hear Ed's tone stand out ...rip brother
