I finally found a reasonably priced cd a few years back. I have most of his pre-Zappa Plays Zappa material, and this album really stands out for me. It has the most complete songs IMO, as many of his later songs just aren't as catchy vocally. I broke out a lot of those CDs this week in honor of his 50th birthday on Sept 5th. Happy B-day, Dweezil!
I don't think that Eddie, one of the greatest and influential guitar players of all time wishes he could play like a cheap imitation with no tone instead. Dweezil can play fast. If he could do more than that, the world would have noticed, but he was limited to the box he played in.
Dweezil plays in many boxes. I love both guitarists so no complaints from me, other than I WISH he played this rock box more often :P .. he is one of the few people who can play Zappa well, for a reason!
Sean Wookie Eddie played at one of Dweezils battle of the bands in grade school, gave Dweezil aguitar and some lessons, and was the first person to call Dweezil when frank died. There's a video on UA-cam of Dweezil recounting the story on stage and he chokes back tears when he mentions the phone call. there is so much negative talk online about EVH (personal not musical) thats its nice to hear how well he respected Frank and genuinely liked the Zappa family.
That guitar tone is 100% Tom Scholz Rockman. Unmistakeable. I have the sound of those things burned into my brain from heavy use of mine back then. Everyone recorded with those back then. Good Times. 😊

WOW, I found a song that Google couldn't identify. I was scanning through some cassettes converted to MP3 and in 1987, In Honolulu Hi, I recorded this song off the radio. I couldn't remember the name (though it's obvious) but tried to get google to ID it. I had a feeling Moon Unit was the singer and a search on UA-cam worked. Was a great song back then and even today.
Frank Zappa used to be next door neighbors with Eddie Van Halen and in Dweezil’s early teen years Eddie would give him guitar lessons to teach him how to play. True story!
Acouple of facts. Eddie never lived near the Zappa household. EVH might of gave acouple of informal lessons but Dweezil was taught by Steve Vai. DZ still has all the notebooks filled with lession plans to prove it.
Be glad you still have a copy of that CD. I used to have it on cassette, and I don't think I do anymore. The CDs are going for up to $150 brand new online! I wish I had one myself.

I'm not sure, but I believe at the time, dweezil was dating robert wagner's daughter, and don Johnson was an old friend of frank, hence why he got frank to play the part of a drug dealer in a Miami vice episode. Frank encouraged his children to explore their creativity, and since I'm sure the song was going to be recorded and mixed at their home studio, he must've been around that day.
Jerry Baccari There is a video on UA-cam of Dweezil on stage telling a story about EVH coming by the house a bunch of times, giving dweezil lessons and a guitar, and even showing up to one of Dweezils grade school battle of the bands and playing on the school stage with him. I had no idea vthat Van Halen was friends with Frank and the family but I have a new respect for him.

And YES...the bass absolutely RIPS on this song. Sonically, it is one of the best rock songs I've ever heard. CLEAN all the way through. And I've used it numerous times to show off my 13.5" subs in my SUV.

FYI: When this video came out in 1986, the kids in this video (Dweezil, Moon, Lowe, Zuniga, Etc.), were in their late teens-early 20’s. Frank was in his mid-40’s, and Wagner was in his mid-50’s. Today, all those, ‘ kids ‘, are now all at least as old as Wagner was back then!
And now Dweezil carries on his father's legacy while his siblings screwed him over after Frank and then his mother died. Dweezil is an absolutely superb guitar player; his father could not hold a candle to his playing talent. Check out Zappa Plays Zappa whenever he tours.

I saw this video only one time, maybe in 1986. It's still cool, not disappointed! I believe some songs I used to like as a boy were real crap. To have Frank Zappa as your father can be a problem, but they were good. *I don't like most Zappa's songs.
