God bless Art Blakey; I was fortunate to sit just feet away from him at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach on the tour to support Gypsy Folk Tales, around '77. It was a spiritual experience!
Only one in a hundred Americans on the street would recognize his name, but it would be with love and respect for one of the greatest US drummers and mentors of talent in jazz--a distinctly American art form that seems hardly known in the 21st century. Thankfully, hundreds of his records are around, plus plenty of videos of Jazz Messengers performances, and as long as music lovers are around a loyal Blakey fan base will always re-emerge.
Note, not retiring, just slowing down, he toured like he was 30 at that time, as did some others of his generation. If you stop doing something you can do when you get older, it's hard to get it going again. So they kept going, thank goodness.
“.’..marching back from the cemetery. Someone goofed, and jazz was born....won’t retire, will keep playing until someone pats me on the face with a shovel ...no America, no jazz”
Interviewers wing it due to nervousness and stock questions roll out. If you thinks this interviewer is bad, check out most of the interviews with Miles Davis. At least this interviewer at least knows some of the history and the music.
Why didnt the piano player have the courtesy to disest, shut up,stop playing ,hang it up,cut it out while Art and Al were conducting this interview? Give me a break,,the piano was not that hot anyway ,it was an amature "noodling" OK,,,he knew damn well these guys were trying to have a nice interview.Wheres the Goddamn respect?? Gotta give props to Art,,,he put up with this bullshit for a time and finally said enough.Respect your elders and teachers y'all .I can hear bullshit piano in any jive jazz music store.I would rather hear Papa Art Blakey speak his mind,,,wouldnt you?DD
Keenan Ruffin-El Sorry no ,,just give it a rest ,,,wood shed at home knucklehead,,, Show some respect,,,,shed at home till the sun go down,,,, Cant you see Art is trying to have a decent interview without disruptions,,,, Wake up and smell the coffee Grasshopper,,,,
Well Wynton Marsalis if that's the Wynton he was talking about obviously isn't a piano player and the interview seemed pretty laid back anyway as if he was just talking to any old guy after the gig.
My favorite jazz drummer

I'm glad somebody had the good sense to do this interview. Art spoke a lot of truth and gave use a lot of history and insight.

Me, my husband, my daughter and my song, know the name of Art Blakey. And I will teach my grandchildren his name and contribution to jazz.
And my great children.
He's one of the greatest jazz musicians, and one of the greatest drummers beyond that.
Also, Sinatra had his "hat years" and so did Art!
I love the way he checked Wynton!👌🏾😎
Words of gold from the be bop drum legend👍
Man, that was damn gracious of Art to put up with all of that interruption and jive. Bless him and his massively powerful heart.
It’s called heroine 😂
Nice interview. He seems like a laid-back, sympathetic cat.
Amazing interview that came out of Youngstown Ohio event! Can't wait to see Al Bright paint live again.
I was actually at that concert.
A great MAN who happens to be a great Musician!😊
8:30 "Hey Wynton, wait a minute..."
Waited a solid 5 seconds
Thank you for sharing this.
yes, Mr Blakey is right, a jazz musician is the most proficient on the instruments they play on..in any music
The greatest!
He seems like a humble man
Great interview!
In 1980, Art Blakey was only 60. What's with the questions about slowing down with old age??
bopgirl ...Bu was sixty-one years old on October 11th, 1980.

Did the interviewer actually say 1:07 "You weren't JUST a drummer in the beginning"?
5000 views WOW!!!!
Lol @ Wynton playing loud
I guess he didn’t know about Buddy Bolden
That piano is annoying.

This interviewer is so mediocre.
