Nothing is more inspiring than seeing a great and talented legend have compassion and be kind hearted. Art Blakey got the message of what life’s all about and he teaches by example. Gratitude!❤️👏💕🌷☕️
We caught Art & his jazz messengers at "Mikell's" in 1988 !! He came and chillwd at our table in between sets!! Still have his autograph!! P.S. I bought him a drink also!!🥃👌
A video store (remember those?) once had the VHS. I rented it many times. It documents Art's trip to London and his playing with these young British jazz artists. It also follows Art in NYC and there is a brief appearance with Roy Haynes. My favorite part was the reworking of "Lester Left Town" with lyrics by a member of The Last Poets.
SMH SMH... I Was 10; Going On 11(Depending When This Documentary Was Released).. That Tune "New York" @ 5:31-5:52...by Blakey's Pianist Donald Brown-2 me-THAT NEVER Gets Old 🎹🎹🎹🎹..!!
He already had CONFIRMED gigs with OTB (Before Art's gigs). Kenny did nothing wrong for a young musician trying to make it in a "not too many good gigs available" environment. This is the same as letting a potential employer know in advance what your available date of employment is. It's none of your future employer's business what obligations you have to complete with your former boss.
trumpet boss ...If you're talking about the scene where Blakey is entering the room, and Cindy Blackman pressing a drum roll, the tune was "Look At The Birdie," a Wayne Shorter composition. It's from the album entitled ROOTS AND HERBS: ART BLAKEY AND THE JAZZ MESSENGERS (Blue Note BST-84347). Recorded on February 18th and May 27th, 1961 at the Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. PERSONNEL: Lee Morgan, trumpet; Wayne Shorter, tenor saxophone; Walter Davis, Jr., piano (February 18th); Bobby Timmons, piano (May 27th); Jymie Merritt, bass; Art Blakey, drums. THE SELECTIONS: Ping-Pong; Roots And Herbs; The Back Sliders; United; Look At The Birdie; Master Mind. All selections above were composed by Wayne Shorter. However, this classic LP (and later on CD) is out of print. I sincerely hope that you'll find it.

I've always liked Art Blakey but never saw him working. I like the way he leads the group.

Donald Brown..
No too many leaders are like Art...MOST of them are GREEDY,DISRESPECTFUL TO THE MUSIC,MUSICIANS ....AND THIEFS
Kenny should know better.....not to leave early for a legend in jazz
1:21 and 3:32 He's wearing a hearing aid.
