Thank you, Ms. Ava DuVernay! I wouldn't have discovered the artistic genius of Mr. Al Bright without being moved to my core by "Origin." Thank you both! "Art in all its glorious forms is immortal." - Sidnitra Christine Bates

He's one of the greatest jazz musicians, and one of the greatest drummers beyond that. Also, Sinatra had his "hat years" and so did Art!

Did the interviewer actually say 1:07 "You weren't JUST a drummer in the beginning"?

Only one in a hundred Americans on the street would recognize his name, but it would be with love and respect for one of the greatest US drummers and mentors of talent in jazz--a distinctly American art form that seems hardly known in the 21st century. Thankfully, hundreds of his records are around, plus plenty of videos of Jazz Messengers performances, and as long as music lovers are around a loyal Blakey fan base will always re-emerge.

God bless Art Blakey; I was fortunate to sit just feet away from him at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach on the tour to support Gypsy Folk Tales, around '77. It was a spiritual experience!

Interviewers wing it due to nervousness and stock questions roll out. If you thinks this interviewer is bad, check out most of the interviews with Miles Davis. At least this interviewer at least knows some of the history and the music.

Note, not retiring, just slowing down, he toured like he was 30 at that time, as did some others of his generation. If you stop doing something you can do when you get older, it's hard to get it going again. So they kept going, thank goodness.

Gotta give props to Art,,,he put up with this bullshit for a time and finally said enough.Respect your elders and teachers y'all .I can hear bullshit piano in any jive jazz music store.I would rather hear Papa Art Blakey speak his mind,,,wouldnt you?DD

Well Wynton Marsalis if that's the Wynton he was talking about obviously isn't a piano player and the interview seemed pretty laid back anyway as if he was just talking to any old guy after the gig.
