My wife and I will be moving to Hua Hin in March (from Australia). Its time for a change of scenery. Will also mean we can bounce around to our other fav countries for much less $$$.
LOL, the one place I saw you when I lived in CM. My wife and I watched this video together and said at the beginning when you said you are getting a sandwich, “Heading to Butter is Better”. LOL! Agree with you as I have the last few videos you made on this topic, people should go now. I also hold the same belief I had before that people are in love with dreaming about moving more than they are in love with the work it will take to reduce their debt, pack up their belongings/sell them, and move into an unknown environment. I know Megan and I will be back in May, has been a long 2yrs in the states, but we got allot of stuff taken care of. Be well John, Tony
My. Mum could hardly walk a the end of her life and she would say to each of her caregivers to get out and travel now. Mum did herself travel the world. So no time like now to get out and do it
Thanks for this! I’m moving with my family to Chiang Mai in January; we’re fully committed so no backing out now. My wife is Thai and I’ve lived in Thailand before, but still quite scary moving somewhere unfamiliar, so really appreciate your optimism 🙏🏻
For people retiring to Thailand, deciding how much is enough is tough. Presumably most Americans are figuring that retirement in Thailand is going to cost them half of what it would cost in the States. If you quit your job at age 60 with half as much money as you need to retire in the States with the expectation that you will stay in Thailand, there is no going home. It's not like you can return to the States and find a new job when you're 60. If you're 30, it's a different story. But I totally agree with your general point that you're wife is right--you can't spend your whole life living for a tomorrow that might never come.
Having lived in SE Asia and the USA and coming home recently to Australia I can not agree with you more. SE Asian weather is making it unliveable - smoke/fire/floods/extreme heat.
The best time to move is when you can afford to fail. It doesn't take much, really...but you should have a bungee cord just in case. You can also take a "Pre-retirement Gap Year", which is what I did in 2019. I used my American retirement account to prove funding for the visa and lived well on 1200 bucks a month. p.s. Butter is Better is WORTH the 11 dollars! It's all good stuff!
I don’t tune in for Jon’s misfortune (my sympathies for what you have gone through). I tune for Jon’s strolls and eating tours😀 I agree with you. I went for it twice in Japan in my 20s and 30s and don’t regret my choices either time as I ended up living there for a total of 9 years. I can even say that it’s because of my Japan experiences that I tune into Jon’s channel.
I dunno mate, Thailand (and other countries) is littered with stories of people who didn't bring enough funds initially and had to crawl back home with their proverbial tail between their legs (part of bad preparation generally perhaps). I do understand not waiting too long, that is the other extreme. As for the algorithm, creators seem to be backlashing like you, fed up of being pushed to create high traffic content and better off just doing what you want to do. Makes you happier in the long run.
Thailand is not that cheap anymore and that’s the mistake many make. I’m used to a good quality of life in my own country and would want to be at least matching that when I move. If you’re out drinking every night and paying bar fines you need a good amount of money.
Really Jon your sending a lot of mixed messages, one moment you say you don't like people who tell people what to do! Here you are telling people to move to Thailand. You didn't think this topic through.
Stop telling people to move to Thailand. Have some consideration for Thais, many of whom do not want to see the country ruined by over tourism. An unending influx of Farangs isn't a good idea and will lead to lots of problems.
Lol literally they were crying for low tourist numbers They r not like u U problly hate farangs liviving peacefully in your country Live & let others live Peace
I’ve been in Thailand for the last 20 years. It is no longer the laid back, easy going cheap life it once offered. I only remain here because I am married to a Thai national. Jon is in the same boat with a child so he has no other options. There are plenty of other options to consider like Mexico and other South American countries. There are plenty of other South Asian options like Indonesia. Malaysia, Cambodia, Philippines, Viet Nam etc.
@@toneloc-cz2xi Depends on the circumstances. If I needed to leave immediately I would go to Malaysia as you get 90 days on arrival without a visa that can be extended another 60 days . Whilst there I would assess my options

Nice! Hua Hin is a great choice :)
Dec 1997 was the best time- 90 baht to the pound
I was here, didn't last long though
Yep, it used to be too good!
Glad to hear the new job is keeping you busy… totally agree about making it now - just got to get the wife to buy in.
Thanks mate :)
Hi Jon, Arrive on Thursday. Everything gone in Australia. Will live between Chiang Mai and Cambodia. See ya soon!
Nice!
Now is a bad time to move to Thailand until there is more clarity on the proposed worldwide income tax on resident expats in Thailand.
This scares me. I already pay taxes in the States.
One day in Thailand is a quarter the cost and 10 times as fun. No need to wait.

Thanks Tony! Not long to go to May :)
Great video on point

Mate change the format. Here you are again walking around the same places saying that you like Chiang Mai. Wow, what a revelation!

Prudent analysis.
We love visiting thailand every year. but we wont move there or anywhere. life in australia is good for me.

Me too. I come here very often but I'm fortunate I live in a very nice place in Australia which I can afford.

You cannot live on air. Money must be available or coming in even when you live in Thailand.
Im 86 and think its too late for me😢
Jon, what route does the blue songteaw travel at 00:58 ? I see them only across the river ?!
Not sure where those ones go
@jondcanton By the way, don't forget the financial requirements on the different types of visa.
It could be lamphun or lampang not sure though
That 'sandwich' was a disgrace! And the poor excuse for bread!!!!!
Tasted good but could have been bigger for the price :)
Just do it!!!!
👍
Why gamble with low season? 😊 Jon is tricky
