I keep telling everyone at work, I'm probably going to retire early and go overseas and they just laugh, and laugh, and laugh because they think I'm joking. But, I'm not. The guy who sits next to me is in somewhat similar circumstances. He lost a lot of jobs due to financial recessions and so he has only been at this job about 7 years and he says "I will probably have to work until I die." and I say to hell with that! I have been there 6 years and get vested in the pension at 10. I won't have a lot of years, but I'll get about $1100 per month. Add to that SS, if we still get it, which I hope we do, and I'll be golden in someplace like Sri Lanka or the Philippines. And I'll enjoy the water and the sunsets and maybe have a few beers, but I don't drink anywhere near like I did when young, so I'll keep it under control.
Never been to sri lanka but i am in the philippines since 9 years now. Philippines isnt super cheap but with $1000-1200 you can manage Greetings from Boracay.
Moving overseas sounds crazy to people who are rooted and comfortable in their house and town with family and friends around. Maybe they are normal. People like you are the black sheep, who for reasons of adventure or survival are willing to consider all their options and make a right turn in their life path. It is not for everyone, and you may find it doesn't suit you, so don't burn the bridges, and have a plan b for life back home. Dan covers a lot of the points you need to plan for in his site.

I applaud Kim’s approach to food. I had a 30 year career in the Food & Beverage business and I was an expert in Food Safety. Every time I am watching vlogs, I can’t believe more people don’t die from food borne illness because of what I see. I too would cook all my meals at home.
@@lexheath8276 I worked for Chick-…-A. I know for a fact and experience from visiting hundreds of restaurants the highest emphasis is put on Food Safety.
I lot of things food related are a bit of a myth. Food poisoning is difficult to get. I got sick when I first went to Asia but it was just my body not used to the bacteria. After that my immune system was much stronger and I ate mostly street food. It sustains billions of people around the globe. We westerners tend to be scared of life

Absolutely love that bit about local stores and big stores having to sell at the same price. This is so great for local businesses. Any of us around 55 or more probably fondly remember our mothers sending us down to the local corner store for a loaf of bread or some milk. Most of those local mama & papa stores are now gone in our countries. Good onya Sri Lanka for thinking up a way to keep it going and thus keep local businesses and supply chains going. I think we'd all use the local if we knew the price was the same :)
I am retiring early at 53. All i have is my rentals which gives a about $850 a week, i own everything outright. I am in NJ which is very expensive to live. I am moving to Indiana PA. You can easily get a 3 bedroom apartment for $650 a month and a one bedroom for $450. PA is very affordable. Yeah, I love those ads which say 'Can you retire on $1M'? You can retire on quite a bit less, the trick is to manage your resources. We realized our SSi check would not cover our $2K monthly mortgage payment but lucky us, we lived in a hot RE market. We remodeled & sold it for a killing. Paid off the mortgage with enough left over to buy an acre and a half in a quiet rural coastal town in the California redwoods. We paid cash & retired without debt. !

Well done on the budget Kim ! You've obviously achieved a mindset where you see the value in things that are good for you, but cost little, like cycling, hiking, shopping local markets, eating healthy. People struggling on the age pension back in Australia ( 3x what you spend) would be amazed.

Not many people would be able to live this cheaply. He has some very good habits most of don't have. The fact that one person can live on a certain amount does not mean that another person can live on that amount. The only way to know what your expenses would be is to go there and pick where you are going to live, eat, drink, and entertain yourself and add it all up. You must do an exploratory visit with your feet on the ground before you will know your cost of living. Thanks for watching and commenting on the video. Dan

I'm an retired expat living well with a family of 3 in Naga, Philippines for about $850/month (basic expenses). It even includes visa and some med requirements. 3 bdrm, 2 bath townhouse, AC and mostly home cooked meals. I think perhaps many countries you can do the same (i.e., $400-$600) as long as you're not paying the expenses of a lot of other people, and/or a high maintenance partner. I try to wrap my head around why some single guys say they need at least $2K-$3K to barely survive. They talk about 'lifestyle,' but leave out what that 'lifestyle' is. Anyway, great video!

I'm from America, lived here over a half-century. It sickens me how inflated living here has become. I've worked in corporate America for over four decades. Sure, you accumulate "things", but the quality of life is harmful mentally. It's a jungle of concrete, people, traffic, pollution, noise, and trying to compete with the Johnson's next door to lease the latest 70K SUV. People are constantly persuaded by marketing to buy more stuff and therefor you have to work even harder to keep stuff. It's a pointless, emotionally draining system, one designed to make the 1% more wealthy. Material things are meaningless. The "news" is intended to cause fear, panic, and promote separation. I will not live in America forever. I plan to spend my last days in peace and quiet, far away from materialism mentality.
After the military I struggled financially and emotionally for many years. On a whim I left everything and began traveling. I had to go where my meager va pension could support me. I lived in southern Mexico for 3 years and now in the Philippines for the past year. I'm happier and my finances are outstanding. I even managed to have several spine surgeries I couldn't afford in the USA. You can live very comfortably for $1,000 usd a month or less. Eat out nearly everyday, movies, drinks, etc.... It's different living outside my homeland but it's a great life if you have an open mind.

Philippines isnt super cheap but with $1000-1200 you can manage
Greetings from Boracay.
I am thinking about the same.. I am a bit older than you I don't want to suffer animore . I don't want to go without so I can pay for my gass if we going to have any for the winters. I am going in 2 weeks time DONT THINK JUST GO AND TRY I THINK WE ARE GOING TO BE SOOO SUPRISED Here is Australia ewriting going down like in England it's going to be a third world country lots of migrants lots of homeless

I applaud Kim’s approach to food. I had a 30 year career in the Food & Beverage business and I was an expert in Food Safety. Every time I am watching vlogs, I can’t believe more people don’t die from food borne illness because of what I see. I too would cook all my meals at home.

Hence why many take cheap anti parasite meds in these countries which are widely available. Normally.

Awesome Aussie bloke, living the great life in Sri Lanka, I need to visit soon.
India , by aw has MRP printed on every product. You can't sell higher than Maximum Retail Price!!
@@dannycbe949 MRP system in India is a complete scam, just like everything else in that county.

Wow. I now have a new fascination with Sri Lanka. Thanks Kim and Dan for this great interview.
Everyone thinks i am crazy for quitting a $45 dollar hour job but freedom and peace of mind is my priority. It does not have to be over seas. America still have places where its possible to retire.

Living in the UK my monthly council tax, water rates, gas, electricity, internet, buildings insurance, car insurance and car tax far exceeds 400 dollars a month. I have not even included mortgage costs or the food bill. As I am not rolling in money Sri Lanka could very well be on my place to visit list. Dan

Wise. I prefer experiences over things. And travel is my favorite experience. :-)
Not to mention lack of community and meaningful connections, loneliness, and a chronic sense of despair, as we all spin our wheels
Interesting! First time I heard anyone speak in detail about Sri Lanka.

That's a fine Buddhist country. It's actually really a Buddhist country. May be the only one genuinely based on Buddha's philosophy. All other Buddhist countries are a combination of Buddhism and something else. The Mahayana Buddhism of South East Asia is only half Buddhist in its philosophy the other half is influenced by what ever the original religion of each country was. Sri Lanka is pure Buddhism though. No mystic magic stuff or Bodhisattvas or" fat laughing Buddha ". The real Buddha was a skinny guy from Nepal. Sri Lanka is pure genuine Buddhist.
But Thailand and Burma (at least) are mainly Theravada.. Otherwise I agree

$500 is Put away a month or Will start to be because I just got done fixing the Bike for $5,000.. Leaving AROUND $500 for the Food and Odds and Ends and then Tags and Taxes at the Start of Each Year... If I need stuff, I eat In more. And eating only Once a Day helps, not including Snacks like Sunflower Seeds and Chips from time to time. Eating Out is between $15-$22 Depending on Day and/or where or use of Coupons at Subway to make that $15-22 Split between 2-3 Days..

Only problem I see is, in Vietnam, You have to keep renewing your Visa every few months and in the Philips, I could Technically become a Citizen and Still receive my Disability Payments but Vietnam is a Way Better Country to live in. Cleaner and Nicer, more Honest People and not as many Power, Internet, Water, Sewage Problems.
Could Not care about any kind of Fish, I am a Pork, Chicken or Beef Guy. I get Sick on Fish. I would need Dog Food for my Dog.
I would NEED a US VA Clinic to receive my Medical and Would NEED to Trust the Mail Service to Receive my Medications...
Sounds like you have life figured out. Congrats.
This guy is awesome and lives a fantastic life ……this is the way to roll 🤘🙏
This is incredible! I am so happy for him.😊 Congratulations on your 1000 videos! Your videos are not only very helpful but fun as well. Last but not least, Chiang your hair cut looks so cute!!! I L❤VE it!!! 😍😍😍😍
Thank you so much!
This video has me checking out prices in Sri Lanka. I can not believe how inexpensive it is there! I'm seeing a lot of 3-4 beds, 2-3 baths, around 2,000 sqft for $200-$300 a month! WOW!
Life isnt just about money,-do you speak the local languages?can you deal with the heat?can you eat local food?are you aware that SL is a very conservative country?how is your health?etc etc
Congrats on 1000 videos, Dan. Have you considered doing a retirement report on Chile? Chile ticks off a lot of boxes for me. Inexpensive cost of living. Lots of outdoor activities. Beautiful and diverse terrain. Urban and rural options. Best of all, Mediterranean climate, not unlike California.
Yes. We head in that general direction in Oct 2024.
@@VagabondAwake Can't wait to see that.
Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 is a great place to travel
Very smart and resourceful guy. Living large on very little income.
i am so poor and broke in canada, i don't know what to do, i have little savings left and about to go homeless, i figure 1 more year i'm going to be broke.
Hang in there ok , every day above ground is a good day. Your turn will come and you will enjoy. Be safe and stay true . Toronto .
Sell ur stuff and move abroad man
Become an online English teacher at Engoo or Native Camp. No qualifications required. Then move to Cambodia where the visa is $300 per year. You will live very comfortably with little effort. Just keep a Canadian address and bank account to link your teaching account to. Solved
@@cameronparkes6629 but i love canada, i really don't want to move abroad. Anyways, are you being serious? i should check out cambodia? What about Thailand, it seems popular. I have no degrees, i am a native english speaker though, but have no teaching experience, i worked in tourism and refuse the covid vaccine, and i lost my job since.
@@cameronparkes6629 we might get rid of TURDeau and vote in Pierre, maybe Canada will change and be better?
Barbados is a great place to retire too! It's not the cheapest, but you can get a nice property for US$200,000 or rent for US$550 per month. Food is a bit pricey, but healthcare is free. Vegetables and produce are cheap. All beaches have free public access. It's sunny all year round.
Hi @honestbajan6877, Would you like to be a guest start on one of my videos? Here is an example guest star video: ua-cam.com/video/ySM_2jAC4v4/v-deo.html
Your interview could be just your voice or we could do a zoom call showing your face. If you would like to be a guest star and share your story please leave a personal message here: vagabondbuddha.com/contact/
Thank you for your comment. The detail of your comment makes this real for people. If you have a business, service, or UA-cam channel, you could share that on the interview. Best, Dan
How well has Sri Lanka gotten over the fertilizer rebellion against the Globalists, the civil war with the Tamil Tigers, hurricanes, and intense heat??
You forgot the Chinese land grab. Never going to get over the intense heat. Tropical life.
@@formica. You can always go to the Central Highlands to escape the heat. Much cooler there.
@@nomadjim Good point! Where the hill stations were.
That is a good solution to live there for many lower-income people. However, how do you do that with the visa in order to get a residence permit or long-term visa? I am not yet familiar with Sri Lanka's immigration policy, but I cheer for him, and thank you so much, sir, for sharing with us on your channel! It would be nice if you guys could make a Visa video or just reply to me here so that also other people can learn about the options for different age groups.
There are changes coming to all the visa laws after the November 14 election.
i think the food is more healthy there and natural...makes quality of life go up.
Yes. Organic Foods And Fresh Are More Cheaper In Alot Of Foreign Countries Than Can Foods Junk
Absolutely Fabulous!! Thanks Guys. I wonder What are the Downsides of Life In Sri Lanka?
Hi. I am in the process of setting up a UA-cam channel. There are downsides that take a little time to adjust to. Mostly small things like lack of variety in food. I overcame that by cooking myself. My brother visited me and it took him about three months to adjust. Now he wants to stay here.
Come for a followup interview when you are ready. You can share your channel. People really enjoyed your take on life. :-)
The key is to not fall for advertising and spending ALL of our money. At least 10 percent of the money we earn is ours to keep...forever. That money should then be invested and will make money of its own. Or, we can follow the orders that we are being issued with.
This man is my newest hero! 🤗
Please go.
To Kandy and take a look at the golf courses
Sounds good. Thanks for the feedback. :-)
Sri Lanka is good for a few months. I would definitely want to change the scenery after that. I have a friend in Sri Lanka and there is nothing to do unless you enjoy the super rural lifestyle.
That woman gardener did her work without a gas powered leaf blower that right there is worth the move ....
I loved the affordability of Sri Lanka. Went there with my husband in December 2022. I can't agree that I felt safe when out alone. I was accosted twice by random men and have heard similar stories from other women. I was never bothered when I was with my husband.
I just happened to see this video and have no interest in moving to Sri Lanka or other parts of South Asia. But it was interesting. Kim has a wealth of information, and is a great communicator.
