    As others have mentioned, the awfulness does seem almost intentional on Spielberg’s part. The aliens are evil so they have red eyes. The kids endure torture by remembering their LARPing. E.T. comes in like an action hero. The aliens evidently resume their war and it’s supposed to be a happy ending. It’s all just so BAD that I honestly think it’s more likely that Spielberg really wrote this to kill off sequel plans.

    The official story is that Spielberg was under pressure from Universal execs for a sequel to ET. He was resistant to this but agreed to write a story treatment. However he deliberately made the story dark and unpleasant, the complete opposite to the original film as he wanted to put the execs off the idea of a sequel. And sure enough it worked and the execs agreed not to do a sequel

      Spielberg was the ultimate studio executive troll. Between this sabotage punk job and the reverse psychology ploy to secure Back To The Future retain its title and not be renamed Space-Man From Pluto, as was highly suggested and pushed for. It seemed like Spielberg's entire side-hustle f*cking with The Suits to stay out of The Creatives lane. These hilarious snow jobs of Spielberg are obvious to anyone not in the eye of the Hollywood sh*t-storm who can't see the forest for the trees with their oversized bloated heads up their own out of their depth asses. They at least weren't so braindead so as to know well enough that the commercial prospects for this ridiculously franchise killing proposal was a career ender and to just leave it alone and walk away. This is the crucial critical problem solving skill-set and baseline common sense gene I feel massively and completely missing from current Disney brain trust Empire and their sith lord Kathleen Kennedy whom this subtle, but obvious colossal company wide financial misstep of a creative direction for a red hot IP would be painfully apparent, but absolutely still wildly lost on KK and her misfit band of Mary Sues. She would not only give it the greenlight, she'd let Spielberg film three quarters of the movie before releasing him from the director's chair, hiring a film school student trust fund baby or Ron Howard to come in and reshoot the movie, but with even more misguided soul-crushing narrative detours, containing even way less commercial prospects and then really doubling down on the utter lack of anything close to a likable, reasonable or ethical character, perhaps hint of something maybe resembling a value system, code of conduct or trace of morality, and then making everything even that much more incoherent, indecipherable and unholy and wrong, ignore your shareholders concerns, attack the decades long built up fanbase, gaslight any and all loyal or potentially new customers, slander the names of any respected media outlet or highly reputable news source for any criticism of corporate content with it's concerning red flag cult-like agenda bias in its overt propaganda and all the subtle subliminal messaging of a blunt force trauma tire iron to the windpipe. But, I digress.
      Spielberg rules.

    The thing that made E.T. interesting is that we never got much insight into what the aliens are like. We knew E.T.’s crew were nonviolent researchers or explorers, but we didn’t get any longwinded exposition, or a look at their home planet. All this “E.T. lore” about evil rival clans and such is so unnecessary and actually detracts from what made the original special. I can only presume Spielberg did not take this script seriously because he didn’t want it made in the first place.

The whole family then together groans like out of a Scooby Doo comic relief moment, "Ohh man, not again!...Eliot!" Spoiler, they all die in horrifically violent and gory detail, including a now deleted scene where Drew Barrymore's character is some how shoved into a microwaveby the evil ET, and she explodes just like in the first "Gremlins" movie. Of course because of that, this movie had to incorporate the new MPAA approved Spilberg invented PG-13 rating so that parents know the worst thing your kid will see is tons of violence and gore and maybe hear 1 f-bomb, but thank god, none of that dreaded nudity or even worse, sex or mentions of sex in any way or form. Those are not natural things your child should see, unlike enough blood and gore to equal the first 20 minutes of the D-Day opening of "Saving Private Ryan," that's totally cool though. (Let's be real, we all know that movie was rated R simply because Tom Sizemore was in it, it's pretty much court ordered in anything he's involved in not involve or be viewed by any minors whatsoever. So anyways, "ET: Numero Dos." ...yuuup...

    Literally several years after the fact. But I like the idea. You have to understand this is just a first pass treatment. The hardest part of doing anything, much less something creative, is just to DO IT. Put something on paper and work it out with all the other executives, writers, assistant directors, actors all of it. Hell, Ghostbusters was set as on the moon with all kinds of crazy spectacle scifi nonsense and was supposed to be more action horror.
    This treatment sounds like it has all the key plot elements. It's not exactly horror, just the mention of D&D and having the kids rely on it during the interrogation part says to me Spielberg wanted to go more Goonies, like an adventure type. I see a lot of extremes here, which is what you want. A wild concept that just grabs your attention, then when you're actually working up a full script you adjust and change it.
    It's sounds bizarre because it's pre-first draft. Imagine where this could have gone. We spend some time hanging out with everyone, the kids go to the forest. I see that whole scene being the crux of the second act. They hide, outwit and out maneuver the evil aliens in a mix of Frodo and the Hobbits running from the Ring Wraiths and the kids from the Goonies Home Alone-ing some crazy D&D/Fantasy based contraption traps. They eventually get captured and questioned mentally. This plays out less like torture and more like making the kids relive memories. You can still have them screaming out for E.T. so he can show up at the end but when they do maybe they crash into a mountain or blow up in space. A type of ending that is a little more effects and action oriented.
    We come full circle by saying goodbye to him again, but maybe this time Elliott goes with E.T.? Anyway, from what I know of writing and what goes from the beginning stages to the end product what you usually end up doing is taking the high points you really believe in and keeping those moments and trimming off and changing a lot of the rest of the surrounding story.
    As is, somebody has some problems sure. But as something to pick apart and make into an adventure movie? This sounds like it would have been a lot of fun.

    ET stands for extraterrestrial therefor the fact that the film is named ET II does not automatically assume that the original alien, nicknamed "ET" by the kids, would be featured throughout the entire film. To be honest, done right, this would have been a lot better than doing what is done with so many sequels, that being a rehash of the first film made just for the money.

    The original ET does have parts that Spielberg plays like a horror film, specifically the opening where ET is being chased is shot like one, so it doesn’t seem that crazy that he might lean into that even more a second time around.
    It is interesting though, because this combined with how Poltergeist started as a horror sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind makes it sound like this was an idea Spielberg had kicking around in his head that he couldn’t shake. How ET is called back in at the end to save the the kids also sounds like how Zelda Rubinstein character is brought in, in Poltergeist. The date of that treatment is a the month after Poltergeist comes out too, so he may have been thinking of returning to the sci-fi version that went unmade but with ET this time around.
    It does however also remind me of a story with Spielberg I heard where he got a studio note on a movie that was so dumb (I can remember from who, may have been Jon Peters) that he sent a note back saying he showed it to the crew and everyone loved the joke the producer had sent them. So maybe he just did it so the studio would leave him alone? But this horror sequel is something he almost just did with Close Encounters, and the version of it that ended up being made dropped all the sci-fi stuff he wanted.

    • @dezznutz3743
      @dezznutz3743 3 роки тому

      Im not sure if Im telling you something you already know but he made ET and Poltergeist at the same time, but due to either inane Labor Laws, or some agreement, he couldnt direct both at the same. So that is why Toby Hooper was brought in to direct Poltergeist, while Spielberg produced it.

    • @DIOBrando-ij2bp
      @DIOBrando-ij2bp 3 роки тому

      @@dezznutz3743 Yeah, he couldn’t do Poltergeist at the time because he was filming ET. Spielberg had an idea to do a horror sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind that seems like it became a version of ET that was never made, and the original sci-fi version of Poltergeist. Hooper was brought in to do the horror Close Encounters sequel but wasn’t interesting in doing a sci-fi movie...but he did have a hunted house movie he wanted to do some they worked on that, and it sounds like Spielberg came up with the end which also happens to sound a lot like the end of this but with aliens. To me this is interesting because it seems like it was Spielberg’s third try at the idea, and it’s happening so closely to the release of ET and Poltergeist. It’s also the second time he’s trying to follow up one of his previous movies, but with a movie that shifts the genre. Although I could easily see something that’s the tone of Poltergeist as a sequel to ET.
      Thinking about it now, Hooper would end up doing something that sounds kind of similar to this too a few years later when he remade Invaders from Mars.

Elliot's mom and keys are an item, and the agency he worked for has become far more insidious since he left, strike teams, drones, post 9/11 Patriot act type stuff. not just making contact but exploiting first contacts. Seeing visitors for what resources humankind could take from them versus fostering good relations.A darker Arc for fans who grew up with ET, but in the end everyone coming together to reunite Elliot and ET. You guys are crazy if you don't think this sounds incredibly interesting! Of course, it definitely needs a better ending. ET or "Zrek" needs to waste the bad guys, not send them away. He needs to go full Super Saiyan and use his heart-light to melt their faces off like at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Actually they need to go to war and light the whole town on fire, it needs to be like at the end of First Blood. The kids being tortured might seem ruthless, but it gives the story some real stakes, PLUS it's more in tune with our own (alleged) interaction with aliens. There are lots of horrifying and supposedly real stories about alien abductees being tortured, and this dark story resonates with that. Also, the original ET was way more dark than you guys realize. One of the most terrifying things I ever saw as a kid was ET lying on the bathroom floor looking like a chalky white corpse, it was straight out of a nightmare! You guys think the whole movie was about them dressing up for Halloween and having fun with ET, heck no, there were guys with guns trying to kill him! Damn, this has to get made. Blood thirsty alien species and an E.T. showing up in the last scene??? Ok if you want to make a horror movie spoof from someone else i can go with that,but an E.T. sequel should be more heart warming and family friendly i believe having the beloved character returns for more trouble to earth or something,with the scientists chasing them again etc.Not a wild alien bloodthirsty enemy race that looking for the peaceful alien! Yes you could go with that concept but without the wild aliens stuff,having the "vilainous" race looking for the alien for captivity and stuff for instance because in the previous movie they landed accidentally on earth,and the other race looking humans for interrogation.And having the earth with some kind of danger & threat from again the "vilainous" race because of this whole mess.And E.T. & friends helping resolving that issue in the end returning all to their homes! A simple story line like that would be a much better sequel and i am not a freaking writer or something!

    There was a 1983 ET 2 Story treatment with no subtitle by Steven Speilberg which had a simpler story of E.T. being sick on his home planet and his people coming back to earth to bring Elliot to E.T.'s planet detecting that they still have a mental bonding. After Elliot helps E.T. get better they try to put Elliot in their planet's 'zoo' which also showcases the plantlife they gathered from Earth. Elliot slowly shows he can't survive in E.T.'s planet's atmosphere either and E.T. must save him this time from an autopsy. This time their mental bond is more solidly broken. E.T. returns Elliot home. Now I got to grab the story treatment to actually find the exact details of some things but if I am correct, in this version Zrech is revealed to be ET's name on his planet. On ET's planet supposedly plant life hums in various musical tones in the zoo scenes. ET is supposedly banned from space flight for learning a verbal language instead of telepathic communication of his planet. Supposedly, ET has a family, but his family only has one scene they are mentioned in. This story treatment was a copy attached to E.T. storyboards and a E.T. synopsis scxript for the first film. Mixed in to these story boards there are a few Raiders of the Lost Ark storyboards as well. Since script like copies of it were circulating with like thick blue covers in a 1984 sci fi convention, which is where I got mine, I am supposing it's sourced from a legit leak. I also have Star Wars early scripts from that year and Star Trek 3 story treatment which reads more like a tv show episode than a movie.
