You turned a mishap into an achievement. Now you have a freezer full of lovely homemade 'ready meals' and some tasty looking food to look forward to. ❤️
I make granola bars: 2 cups rolled oats 2 cups fruit, eg applesauce 1/2 cup dried fruit 1/4 cup nuts or seeds I put in a loaf pan (buttered or release agent) and bake at 350 F for @ 25’ in a small toaster oven. Makes 6 hearty bars or 12 modest treats. Sometimes I add syrup or cinnamon. It’s not super sweet. Each big bar about 200 calories. Today I am testing baking in a small crockpot.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't close the freezer sometimes.... I also get cooking when I do that. Your meals 😋 taste good I could imagine the smell yummy. Thankyou for sharing your ideas 💡..
In America we definitely call it a fruit crisp. We also call anything with mashed potatoes on top a Shepherds Pie doesn't matter what meat is in it. Chicken pot pie is what we call the chicken dish you made too. It all looks delicious. Glad you were able to salvage everything.
I do call that a fuit crisp (northeast U.S.) though I have heard the terms crisp and crumbled used interchangeably. I have had that happen a few times when we lost power for long periods of time (a few days due to a massive blissard). We put the fridge on a portable generator and moved the semi-defrosted stuff into there until power was back on and we could use the oven. Did use a camp stove to cook up some sausages and onions and peppers and then some burgers. Once we could use the oven I baked up a batch of chicken parts and my husband was delighted to eat some of them everyday in his work lunch - his favorite lunch. Also made chicken pies and turkey pies. Geat work saving all that good food and wonderful solutions.
Hi Jane and Mike 🤗 Your dinner looked amazing! plenty there for a feast! Yum! and that quilt is just gorgeous! We had a lot of rain in June as well so like you we're finally catching up on the garden chores.
I am always happy to eat some salmon. That looked marvelous! * I have had this happen, and the freezer needed a new gasket. My standby meal prep ideas (including saving stuff from a freezer mishap): fried rice with veggies, stew, spaghetti sauce (you can hide a lot of veggies in spaghetti sauce/marinara sauce), baked meat - freeze again after baking, use in 2-3 weeks .... there you go.
I've always called it a crisp. I made plenty of them when my children were small. Apple is the most common but I used any fruit I had, including canned fruit.I made a small one a while ago, just me now, with strawberries and blueberries that need to be used up. All of the meals look delicious. Great save.
The crisp can be any fruit, generally apple. The topping is oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and cut in the butter. Crumble this mixture on top because it does stick together in clumps. It is my favorite dessert.
Yes here in Canada we call that a crisp one of my family favourite desserts I use all kinds of fruit and berries fresh, frozen or even canned. Filling and good
Yes, it is Crisp in the USA. I caught my large freezer last year just before the great thaw. I was lucky and did not need to cook anything. It was an unpleasant experience. I enjoy your thrifty recipes and ideas. Have a enjoyable weekend.
That could have been a budgetary disaster and some food waste, but it was a good save! A bump in your plan for the day, but less cooking in the future!
I’m so glad it was just human error and not an actual appliance failure! My husband and I had our fridge go out about a year ago and we were scrambling to get ice chests set up while he worked to repair the fridge. We lost some of the chilled food that was too warm to risk eating. As far as the fruit crisp goes, I think we call that a fruit cobbler here in the US. I don’t think it matters whether we use flour or oats for the topping. Edit: I asked my Alexa for the difference between a crisp and a cobbler and she corrected me. One has oats and one has flour They are, indeed, different. So I was mistaken. 🤷♀️
Hi Jane thanks for your post, yes about a week ago my chest freezer broke down and I was in a panic cos it was full of food. Luckily my neighbor is a electrician who fix it, I quickly cooked up and refroze the meals
Yes you are correct here in the US we do call the dish that you made a fruit crisp. Fortunately I've not run into a situation where I've had food defrost and have to do a batch cook but you certainly made the most of an unfortunate situation. It was great you were able to create those meals that you could then freeze for later. Nothing went to waste and in the future you've saved yourself some time if you've had a busy day working and don't really feel like cooking you can grab one of your treasures from the freezer and reheat it and you'll have dinner quite quickly and easily. Your salmon dinner looked delicious! I think I could eat a lovely piece of salmon every night for dinner and not tired of it. Thank you for sharing with us, Jane and Mike! I hope you have a lovely weekend!
In Canada I/we make an apple crisp or a berry crisp, but I/we also make a flour topped one too and call it an apple crumble or fruit crumble. Peach crumble is really good.

We'd call it corn flour too. Corn starch is quite refined and when cooked comes out quite clear (can be used for glazes on fruit or more clear sauces like the Chinese do).
Yes, that happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I had stuff on the stove as well as the slow cooker going, for a day and a half, then portioning up and back into the freezer, except for a week's worth. Whew!
@@FrugalQueeninFrance PS: It was the afternoon of a particularly busy day. Just as I was congratulating myself for multiple jobs well-done, ready to put my feet up, I discovered the problem and had to muster-up some energy.
Well done on your quick thinking and baking marathon to save the day! It’s a real pain when these things happen but glad for you that nothing was wasted and you have meals back in the freezer and ready to go! Btw I agree with your cottage and shepherd’s pie descriptions!
Great upcycle! Looked delicious. We’ve had that happen. Although it was after we had stocked up after meat sales, so frozen casseroles and dishes were out of the question (no room). Instead, I canned the meats and chicken. Fabulous as an ingredient in easy supper dishes!

I lost a freezer of beef once, it was a DEVASTATING waste (not salvageable by the time it was discovered….) I now have little temperature monitors in all 3 of my freezers and the peace of mind is invaluable! The $30 investment is worth it to me to be sure I’m not losing all that food. What a shame I hope that wasn't all your bargains from the week before. t is easy to do with that type of freezer if one drawer isn't properly back in place.
I'm planning to go without a fridge and freezer in the future. To save on electricity. We don't eat meat or dairy so I don't have to freeze such bargains. Any vegan Ice-cream I buy or make gets eaten before it hits the kitchen counter. No matter how much I cook, the kids eat the leftovers before I get a chance for it to make it to the fridge. My fridge freezer isn't large so I will plan to use it just for summer. That's the plan.
I'm intrigued by your chickpea and cornflour pastry. Any other ingredients in that? Chickpea flour is cheap and nutritious and I have lots of it and am always looking for new ways to use it.😁
We had a power cut power while we were away recently. It was off for 48 hours but apart from some slightly soft fruit, all was OK. I'd be interested in your pastry recipe as I've been gifted loads of chick pea flour. Thank you.
@@FrugalQueeninFrance interesting! In the US the agriculture extension source indicates that as long as it doesn’t smell or look bad that fruit can be refrozen. I guess erring on the side of caution is no harm!
Such useful ideas, and it's always great to have some ready meals waiting to be cooked up if you don't feel like cooking. Being vegetarian we don't do anything with meat, but I eat salmon, and get the 2 pack skinless fillets (I can't stand skin on anything) and they are very nice. They go a long way too. I'll have one mashed up with salad cream stuff and ketchup which makes me sandwiches for about four nights. The other one I did try to defrost in the microwave intending to make a fish pie with mashed potato, but I didn't get that far as the salmon sort of exploded. I heard a bang and opened the door and it was all over the inside, even on the rung things at the top! Took ages cleaning it off.😱
What a nightmare! I had to do something similar after a 24 hour power cut last winter. Some food was still quite solid as we didn’t open the freezer door at all but the vegetables and thin pieces of fish had obviously defrosted a bit.
