  • UK Air Conditioning is not cheap with electricity costs at an all time high. My experience and costs in running a GoodHome 12,000 BTU portable unit for a year at UK electricity prices.

i have a large lounge with huge patio windows, south facing so in the hot weather it can be extremely warm to the point of dangerous to the health of my dog. So i went out and bought a 1200 btu aircon made by LG. it costs lots but i learnt to use it in conjuction with thermal black out blinds to reflect the heat and they mke a huge difference. the material for the blinds can be just velcroed to the window frame to create a buffer and when you don't need the blinds can be justt taken off and stored away. i can get a cool 19c when i want it but settle for 22 :) i ignore the cost of the bills at present because it's all about looking after my old dog but i have looked at the usuage for the month and it's ok. nothing like the horrific time i had to use electric heaters for a month.

Check out the cheaper Mitsubishi 5,4 kW heatpumps cause the can heat the whole year and cool in the summer.
Yes, 1.200€ is a lot more , but you can mount it on your own with the quick connect system incl. for that price (5 m in this case incl. WiFi + outside wall mount, pipes).
This runs with COP 4,3 which means 1 kWh electricity will deliver 4,3 kWh of warm air which is higher efficient than the usual central oil or gas heating with the long pipes and less efficient radiaotrs in your room. And if you have solar power it is even more beneficial.
I mentioned the big one which can heat big 60 qm room but it is important to get the bigger one cause that way you can heat the house or appartment with that cheap energy by letting the door open a bit more or less. The smaller ones like 2,3 kW or so are 300€ in total cheaper, but it is usually worth to pay more.
And: Mitsubishi is a band with strong reputation for ages, also the repair shops have parts and schematics, you do not have to throw them away while the mobile ones dy about 6 years after purchase if used continously during summer only.
Again: it is the highest efficient way and also a cheap one to slowly reduce the gas or oil bill cause the radiator valve will no longer run if the heatpump has already heated the room, therefore the time till the next oil burner starts will increase, therefore lower the consumption.
You can start small and have not to invest an awfull lot for a huge heatpump, you can start small.
Next step would be a warm water heatpump boiler from for example Atlantic the explorer V4 with 270 L cause that is available with an additional heat exchanger. If you have cheap energy from the solar power system you can heat the full volume up and the heat exchanger will transfer up to 16kW into your old oil / gas heater which just requires to connect 2 more copper tubes. This way the boiler will heat the oil burner heating circle to the radiators.
With mobile devices you might save a lot like 800€ but you will have to pay afterwards and also during the summer when it is running. The mitsubishi are far more efficient in cooling and can also heat during spring, autumn and even winter up to -5°C.

They are noisy but do work okay. I now have 3 wall mounted split system and they cool/heat most of the house.
Try noise cancelling headphones, I use Bose QC35 and they are awesome.
In Canberra Australia, our extremes are from minus 8⁰c to 45⁰c but normally minus 5⁰c to about 38⁰c on an average season. This coming summer is expected to be super hot and dry.😵
Keep cool Fred, stay in the one room and save costs. Cheers.👍🤠

Hi. Fred. We've got chinchillas. Cages in special small room with air con. In the summer it runs almost constantly at around 17 C as chinchillas must be kept cool. I won't mention the running costs... You can guess! 😂 All the best, love your videos. Gaz

A portable Air con unit was available to me cheaply about 5 weeks ago and i was interested but I did my research on how much power it pulls and decided I dont care how hot it gets, I will make do with just a fan, the cost of electricity is insane.

We have one, but I wouldn't try to maintain 22deg, normally set it to 25 or so. I only use it for "emergencies" when the outside temperature is over 35 (mainly because of the noise). If I find myself needing to use it often, I'll invest in a proper installed one.

Yes i agree on the noise. We ran ours all night for a couple of nights but when the compressor kicks in it can wake you up.

Yes you need the vent pipe directed outside as it expels hot air.

@@CB-RADIO-UK It also draws in moist, unfiltered outside air. Highly suggest to DIY a non-restrictive intake to the condenser side of the unit. You will get a third more cooling for free that way, and much less noise.
