  • Current list of top rated portable air conditioners overall:
    1. Midea Duo
The Midea Duo has replaced the LG LP1419IVSM as the most efficient portable air conditioner on the market. It is so much more efficient that the 12,000 traditional BTU submodel - the MAP12S1TBL - has a SACC of 10,000 BTUs. The 14,000 traditional BTU model - the MAP14HS1TBL - has a SACC of 12,000 BTUs.
As we talk about in this video, we always recommend that you buy the highest SACC model you can afford and so we recommend the MAP14HS1TBL over the MAP12S1TBL, though either one of these submodels should perform very well even in the most challenging environments.
Midea Duo MAP14HS1TBL (12,000 SACC BTUs) on Amazon - geni.us/Os0aFfc
Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL (10,000 SACC BTUs) on Amazon - geni.us/XLVLtc
    2. LG LP1419IVSM
The LG LP1419IVSM (10,000 SACC BTUs) is now recommended as the second best option on the market.
See it on Amazon - geni.us/4EVHe
    3. NewAir NAC14KWH02
The NewAir NAC14KWH02 (9,500 SACC BTUs) is now recommended as the third best portable air conditioner on the market.
See it on Amazon - geni.us/Y6jJzAG
Alternative options for smaller and/or easier to cool rooms (low SACC units):
    Black + Decker BPP06WTB on Amazon - geni.us/u5OKFeS
    Frigidaire FFPA1022U1 on Amazon - geni.us/kgUicu
Additional options for large and/or challenging to cool rooms:
    Whynter ARC-14S on Amazon - geni.us/X8pfDz
    Honeywell HL14CESWK on Amazon - geni.us/CIX2
In this video we aim to find the best portable air conditioner on the market. To do so, we first have to discuss a new standard for portable AC cooling capacity - SACC. A clear understanding of seasonally adjusted cooling capacity (SACC) is absolutely critical to making a purchase decision. Next we discuss the pros and cons of dual hose portable ACs and how to estimate area of coverage (in sq. ft.) for a particular model. We end by going over the best options currently on the market.

Great video and finally I can send this to people that don't believe them when I tell them about the single hose versus dual. I still think dual is best no matter what.
    Quick story:
I first purchased one back in 2005 for my Class A motor-home. The roof top units worked great but were older, power-hogs and very loud. It was mid day, the roof top A/C had been running and the interior was comfortable (and loud) as I unboxed and setup the new unit. I put it in the front area near a window and sealed up all cracks with tape as I hooked up it's single hose. I sat in front of it and felt how cold it was and how quiet. I turned off the top A/C and let the new unit take over and it seemed to be doing great. I then went further forward and sat in the drivers chair, to do some paperwork, while my fiancee laid on the couch. It was 95 outside, in the Florida swamp heat, but so much better inside. Life was good.
After about 30 minutes I found my self starting to sweat and could have sworn the unit stopped cooling. I asked my fiancee and she said it was still blowing ice cold. I went over and stood in front of it and sure enough, it was still blowing cold. I went back to the front and felt, at least, a 20 degree difference and scratched my head. I went to the mid and then the rear bedroom and it was just as hot as the front now. I quickly realized what was happening; the unit was creating a negative pressure and every-bit of the motor home was becoming an oven, except for right in front of the new unit. Life was loud again as we reverted back to the roof top unit.
Back then I just put it in my garage and eventually sold it with the warning. I had no time to research it and also figured they did not make any dual hosed units since I had never seen one for sale. Not till a decade later did I find one but no longer used the RV. It was for my garage where there used to be a wall A/C from the previous home owner. It was an actual rectangle opening in the wall (not a window rigging). I took the board that was cut to fit the opening after they removed the A/C, installed holes large enough for the two intake and exhaust hoses and began to cool my garage workshop for the first time. Life was good.

So you're saying I should be okay as long as I get the dual hose. My AC unit went out in my travel trailer and decided this was the best way to go. I still have the one in my bedroom. Mississippi isn't any better than Florida.

Very informative review. Thank you. I've been using a portable unit in my bedroom for years, and one thing I've done has helped a great deal--I insulated the exhaust hose. I used a "duct insulation" picked up at my local home center. It's mylar foil-wrapped fiberglass that is meant for round ducting. I cut it to length to match my hose, and secured it at both ends of the hose with duct tape. I protected the thin mylar foil with heavy-duty plastic sheeting (3.3 mil) and used lots of duct tape to also secure that. I cannot detect heat loss through the sides of the hose now, and before the insulation, the hose got noticeably hot to the touch. I think this must increase the effiiciency of it in my room, although I have no way to quantify that. For a smail cost in money and time, it has been very beneficial. I move this hose daily (I can't leave the AC hooked up when not in use at night), and it has not torn or been damaged in any way. If I get another portable unit, I'll do that to the new one too.

Dual hose units are great for small grow rooms/closet grows because you can attach/duct a carbon filter with the second hose, instead of using it as it was intended. If you do that, its best to cover the secondary compressor cooling vent so it doesn't pull in the smelly air you are trying to filter before exhausting.

You will not find a more in depth, comprehensive review. The clear revelation of the SACC score provides the critical criteria for decision making in purchasing the appropriate BTU output of a unit. I just purchased the LG 1419IVSM after scouring the country I finally found one in a Home Depot In Nogales Arizona. They have one more left as of 5/27/2020. Astoundingly thorough in considering all factors affecting the efficiency of an inherently inefficient AC unit. Very enlightening to say the least. Thank you for all of your time and effort on this subject.

Really appreciate the video to help understand the inefficiencies of these units. Unfortunately its the only thing that will work for my situation as window AC units are not allowed. My question is can you do a review on AC/Heat?Dehumidifier type units and your recommendations? These older apartments in the Northwest did a terrible job in placing the baseboards. Dont like using them and think a dual or try purpose unit might be what I need.

Thank you, extremely informative. Living in the San Fernando valley (Los Angeles), and in the the next few months, late June thru September, it is going to be 100 degree days, and rather hot nights. Since we are in an apartment, my options are limited. We have a full in window AC unit in the living room, but it seems it will not cool of the entire first floor even with all doors open. Enter a possible portable AC unit. I am thinking of getting a single hose unit, and place it in the hallway cooling both bedrooms, total square feet = about 500 sq ft...I can vent the hose via the bathroom window. All windows are the old style crank windows.... I don't want to spend more than $500. Only will use from June through September....

I doubt the freebie I got is very efficient, but I modified it to a dual hose myself. I only need to use it 8 weeks a year max(running 50%of that time) and it's the best/only option for the room. The condenser exhaust is plumbed into an 8" exhaust line, so the hot air is pulled out quickly and the fresh air comes from outside the room. It will not cool the room without the second hose

Great review but you compare an LG single to Wynter dual hose unit, it’s not the same design. I have a Honeywell that is a single hose unit but has the connections to be converted to dual hose. I strongly feel if I purchase the extra hose to convert it to dual hose, it would make a huge difference. That would be a better comparison for dual vs single hose units.

I have a dual hose unit in my master bedroom on the second floor. I slipped some air duct insulation over the exhaust hose. After watching this video I think I should insulate the air intake hose too. I am thinking of replacing a large (stays in the window all the time.. don't ask.. wife want's it gone 12,000 BTU) window unit with a portable on the first floor. Now all this being said about insulating my hoses. Does that impact the SACC of my existing unit and any new unit I might want to purchase? We live in New Hampshire and we do have some 95+ days in the summer. Also, like that guy said below, this was the most informative video on this subject I have seen... First of all, thank you for the kind words! To answer your question: Yes, insulating its hoses will absolutely positively impact any portable AC unit's SACC.
Note though, that it won't impact it to the point where a portable unit will be as efficient as a window unit. A window unit will be far more efficient than your portable unit even if you insulate both hoses of your portable unit.

You should do analyses on window AC units! Since portable units are inherently inefficient (and window AC units seem to be less expensive), I'm leaning toward getting one, but it's a lot to digest... if you have a recommendation for a budget-friendly unit with a dehumidifier ( for a small bedroom ) I'm all ears!

I live in a humid climate and have a smaller room to cool. I have read that if you have an air conditioner that cools too quickly it will shut off too soon and will not dehumidify adequately. Terrifically thorough analysis. Thank you. I'm curious about dehumidification rates on ACs and how that affects the performance, if it comes into play in the SACC score. I'm also very curious what your analysis of some window ACs is, specifically something like the Midea U ACs and if they are more than merely a gimmick.

    • @consumer-analysis
      @consumer-analysis  4 роки тому +2

The two metrics (dehumidification rate and SACC) definitely correlate. Generally, the higher the SACC, the greater the higher dehumidification rate on dehumidifier mode. For example, the LG LP1419IVSM can remove up to 163.2 pints of moisture per day. The lower SACC LG LP1417GSR can only remove up to 74.4 pints of moisture per day. I do plan on testing window ACs in the future.

    Hello Consumer Analysis,
thank you very much for the info in this video, very helpful.
I would like to ask a question. On all single hose portable air conditioners the air filter is always removable and washable no matter the brand and model but the intake grille (bottom) is sometimes removable and washable and sometimes not.
So my question is the following:
Does it matter much if the intake grille (bottom one) is removable and washable or not? If not removable, how can it be properly cleaned?
Thank you very much in advance for considering my query.
    Best regards,
    SV

Very good review. I do wish more discussion was devoted to handling the condensate. This has been a real problem. If its portable then wouldn't it be logical that I want my water to drain out the window? And most windows are not on the floor where the drains are.

    • @dr.eldontyrell-rosen926

These ACs use the heat of the condenser to evaporate water condensation which is carried out the window with the heated air (within certain limits).

I'm considering a duel hose Hisense unit from costco. The manufacture says this unit is 10k SACC / 12k BTU. If you are comparing a 10k single house vs 10k duel house. Do the advantages of of having duel hose matter more possibly?
The reasoning for duel hose for me is being in the PNW with wildfires in the summer. Along with the aroma of the Puget Sound near me on a hot day is not great. Minimizing negative pressure seems like a plus. "MODELAP70020HR1GD" not sure if I trust the manufacture though.

No mention of the coefficient of performance?
Although this would vary according to the ambient temperature, you could specify representative figures. At 95F and 83F would be a good choice. But of course we would need to know the power of the motors (fan + compressor) at those speeds, which is usually undisclosed.

The reason you don't see dual hose systems is due to the cost to build them and people willing to pay the extra money for them. Single hose units air intake is coming from the room it's cooling and is exhausted outside. dual hose system pulls air from the outside cools the coils and go's right back outside super heated. It's a heat exchanger. Dual will use 1/3 less energy to do the same job as a one hose unit.

Sadly the reviews on Amazon show the NAC14KWH02 with only one review and its a one star. And the LG LP1419IVSM looks much better but still has 18% 1-stars, people must be rating these units harshly. • @consumer-analysis

I think a lot of people have unreasonable expectations when it comes to portable air conditioners - they expect them to work better than they are capable of working - which is a big reason why even the best units are often rated poorly by consumers. If you're having trouble finding a "SACC" rating look for a "DOE" rating instead. The "DOE" rating usually = the "SACC" rating. You have me stumped on your last question. I'm not 100% sure who tests these to determine the ratings though the test procedure is outlined by the federal government: www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/retrieveECFR?gp=&SID=83f8e5ba7502cb6f0b2803f5b3a467d3&mc=true&r=PART&n=pt10.3.430#ap10.3.430_127.cc

Yes, I agree that most users assume these portable AC units are going to work at least as well as a window-based AC unit, and I understand they aren't, but I was just hoping for some positive feedback from amazon purchasers on these two units since they look good and have high SACC levels. I went ahead and purchased a Whynter ARC-14S 14,000 BTU Dual Hose unit from Amazon, and I'll see if i made teh right choice. It’s a 14k BTU but I can't find the SACC rating, do you know what it might be? I'm a little worried about the vents facing more upward instead of outward, but I’ll just have to see how it works. Do you have any info on this unit, any major pros or cons? Thank you again for your excellent UA-cam video! :)

Hi, so I read your entire review on the ARC-14S and your arguments for getting a LG LP1419IVSM instead make me want to cancel my order and purchase a LG LP1419IVSM. However:
      1. I looked today (8/24/20) and none are in stock on Amazon, and HM only has limited stock for pickup far away from me. :(
      2. I'm just about 4 miles from one of the CA fires, and I purchase a dual hose to keep the fumes and ash out. I understand from your review of the ARC14S that some of the inside air gets pull along with the outside air and thus the AC pulls from the room and thus from outside. But if I purchase just a single hole, then I’m thinking for sure outside air will be pulled inside my home, right?
So, in my case with the CA fires, am I best using a dual hose like the ARC-14S, or do you recommend a better dual hose?
      Thank you again!!!
      :)

    • @consumer-analysis
      @consumer-analysis  3 роки тому

@@jenwilliams2714 Unfortunately, there really aren't any dual hose units on the market better than the ARC-14S, so if you're going the dual hose route then that's the model I would go with. Regarding your concern about outside air getting into the house, I would probably be inclined to go with a dual hose unit like you are. I would also strongly recommend adding air purifiers to the rooms you spend the most time in in your house. The top rated air purifiers I recommend are not that expensive and will greatly improve the air quality in your house.

Im just torn between going with the LG Model # LP1419IVSM in your video the one with 14KBTU/ SACC of 10,000 OR the LG Model # LP1417GSR which is also 14K BTU but /SACC of 8000. Its just below the 9000 BTU threshold you mentioned...So I'm wondering should I go with the SACC of 8 or 10,000? I watched two videos of yours, and you keep point out the negative pressure created.
All homes and apartments have ventilation systems, supply registers in them, and they have a two way system to prevent this issue, HVAC.
So that negative pressure will be compensated by the HVAC system supply registers of your home/apartment.

    • @marcoavila2426
      @marcoavila2426 4 роки тому +2

With all due respect, could it be that you are not understanding the principle with negative pressure created by single hose system?. It does not mater if the house compensates for negative pressure in that one room, your entire house will end up with a negative pressure. The machine is pulling in ambient air from your home, cooling the machine and dumping all that air out side. The air needs to be replaced and it will be by drawing in air from every crack around exterior doors, around every window in the home and any other port leading to the exterior. That air that gets replaced can only come from outside where it's most likely a scorcher and 90+ degree hot air is being drawn into your home and leading back to that room that the unit is in.

How do you think your home deals with that?

No. ALL homes do not HVAC systems. My home was built in 1962. It has a room heater in the living room and no AC whatsoever. No ductwork. I have a window AC in the living room, but it doesn't cool my bedroom. The one and only window in the bedroom is too narrow to accommodate even a small window AC. So a portable unit is the only option.

This is very informative. One thing I'd say if you live in a part of the country (or world) with low humidity levels below 40%, i.e. the Southwest, CO, NM, NV, AZ, I'd recommend checking out a Hessaire MC18M portable evaporative cooler. Evaporative coolers are much more efficient than traditional air conditioners - but you do need to add water to them if you can't hook up a hose. One question: are you saying you would never buy a portable AC unit when you could buy a window unit instead?
