Natal wheels. I just did that to one of my flat cars, and it stays on the track better and rolls better than before. It even goes over a faulty switch other cars crash on, and I am going to fix. The point id the metal wheels were like night and day. I was amazed at the difference.
About to run a massive train so i need the drag reduced too. What is the size of the factory installed wheels and what size do i need? It seems you're saying you replaced factory 33 with 36 on all areas except the ends, is that right?
I got two sets of these 5 unit well cars in the mail yesterday and my Athearn RTR sd40-2 barely pulls them unloaded around my Backmann EZ track 18" radius track. If I load the well cars, it might move a bit but it will eventually stop and just spin its wheels. I treated my track a few weeks ago with No OX ID conductive grease, so that is part of the problem. I wiped off most of the excess grease but I am still encountering a ton of rolling resistance, especially in the curves. I am planning on hitting up my local hobby shop and picking up some nice fully metal wheels and hopefully that will help.
Ditto... !! everything you described and did I went through... reemed the holes and replaced all wheels. WOW... and I thought I was the only one... Darrell
I thought I was too! Which brand of wheels did you put in. I just test fit them with atlas wheels since I was weather some atlas hoppers. I need to go buy some for these well cars
@@CSXNSModelFan I purchased in bulk Intermountain wheels as I have quite a few well cars... and yes.. what a major difference... watch one of my latest vids.. NS rail fanning ... and you will see th in action
Thanks for the video, bought 6 of these and swapped the wheels for Intermountain ones and they do roll much better. Lombard Hobbies still has a few of these left for $70 now, good deal.
I been replacing most of my older freight cars of Athearn, Walthers, Atlas, Tyco, Roundhouse, and many more with Walthers Proto series trucks/wheel sets. I use 33-36-inch metal wheels with their plastic type trucks. They are very smooth rolling. They are better than the Athearn or Atlas version wheel/truck sets. I have one of the single well cars from Athearn's early 1990 era run. Need to replace those soon with 36-inch wheel/truck sets. I heard good things about Intermountain wheel sets that work best wtih Tyco and Bachmann cars.
Thanks for the tips. I also had to ream out the pin holes a bit. I think maybe too much paint or coating In There. I have not changed out the wheels on mine. But I have the same issue. I have 2 questions….#1, did you by chance contact Walthers about the wheels being wrong.? I know Many of us had issues with the 2 bay hopper wheels being the wrong size and it really effected the coupler height. I emailed them and because there were so many complaints They sent out free wheels. #2 by changing the the end wheel sets wouldn’t that drop the coupler height? I really like the weight, details, and price on these sets of cars. I also got mine from Lombard. Do you live in Akron? I’m in Cleveland.
I have not reached out to walthers but I have thought about it. I actually got the walthers hoppers and received the new wheels. I grew up in cleveland but currently don’t live there. I reached out to you via email to talk more.
I just threw on some atlas metal wheels. I was weather some of my atlas plastic pellet hoppers and the wheels were sitting on the side. I’ve been doing some research but I think I’m going to get Intermountain wheels in bulk for all the 5 car sets I have. Seems to be best deal. I also saw that walthers proto metal wheels look good but unsure still.

I was pleasantly surprised too!
I used micromark truck tuner and intermountain wheels. The wheels actually are 33 and 38s. They roll smoother and I use 3 units on one train
I will have to look into if it's actually 38 wheels. I thought the box said 33 and 36 but could be wrong.

Yes I believe so. It’s been a while since I did that and can’t fully remember. Whatever I said on the video worked for me. Sorry I wasn’t as helpful.

Getting new wheels will be the game changer!

Can anybody please tell me, how long is such a 5 car unit in inch or cm? Thanks...
I have them all boxed up but next time their on the layout I will
These are 59.99 on train world right now, should I pick them up? Hopefully I wont have to buy new wheel sets
they will run with the current wheel sets. They just run better with new ones. 60 is a bargain, especially as its mostly prototypical
These well cars are just awesome, have 6 sets of them! Very nice tips on the wheels of these things as well!
Yes they are after the wheels are changed out I love them. Hoping the new run is smoother running

Were the original wheels metal? And if I understand it right, fixing the cars adds 10-15% to the cost of the set?
They were the walthers mainline so the axle and end nubs were plastic. Yeah sadly I’m figuring it will add about 10-15 dollars on per each set.
What brand of wheels did you install ?
