Sir, you have one of the best run operations I've ever seen. Clean, organized, and you treat your animals with respect. Wish everywhere were even half as good as what you're doing... cheers.
On the workshop…. I’ve done a few and have moved into a new workshop in 2022 and just doing it up. Now it depends on the tools you use and what you do, but before you start insulate the walls roof and floors. 50mm PIR will do. Why? it has practical implications on cold weather working, Rust on tools, storage of fluids etc etc. my last workshop had it, my new one doesn’t…. And I’m installing it ASAP. A few points, and sorry if these are obvious. Have a level floor, and use the space gap on the difference in floor level to add floor insulation. Go online and look at layout and workflow. Put everything on castor wheels. Air filtration and extract, the higher volume the better. CCTV, alarm an sensor lights, tools are expensive, and getting insurance for a workshop remote to your house is bespoke and expensive. ( I know I have it) Pallet racking Lighting over the work benches so you don’t get shadows. Everyone says 4000k cool white but I’ve had 3000k warm white and prefer it, ( again have had both) Compressor hose reels ( love them) I could go on and on….. but enjoy your new shop… ANYONE ELSE HAVE IDEAS…….? Keep adding them!
I enjoy when the calves come and their moms know their way to calving pen. I don’t know how you keep up w/ everything when the calves come. Thank you for sharing. Loving your husbandry videos! Interesting calf tag system.🐄
Calves are looking great. Closing the front won't protect ur roof from the wind. The wind will suck the roof up from above not blow it up from underneath. I would put the straw in the new shed then u can get in easy with the loader. Thank you for the video.
Build the steel rack with 4×2 box extend it so it's touching rafters, back wall & pillar, bolt it to everything. Then sheet it (maybe fiberglass insulation between sheets) & that's the dividing wall done. Maybe Galebreaker type roller maybe for closing straw side?
I would have a small doorway in your dividing wall for the shed then you could park things to work on under cover and still get to your tools easily and would still leave that side fit for straw or other storage.
Hi lads, great idea with the shed in fairness making use of an old building. One small bit of advice from an outsider looking in, consider putting your work bench on the new wall in the middle of the shed, my reason for it would be when you have your new shed built alongside that shed you could knock a personnel door from the workshop to the machine shed saving going out in the rain if your working on something bigger in the machine shed also handy for going in and out with tools from one to the other.Just an idea.
I'd recommend great lighting in your new workroom, and painting the walls a sunny baby yellow. It lifts the spirits no end. Grey for the floor is practical, but gloomy if you did the walls in it

Calf's are looking great Adrian, and what a result on the charity fund raising you must be very proud and if your not you should be, you have done a great thing here and thank you for raising awareness, on the shed door front, I would have 2 sliding doors that slide past each other to allow access to either side, time might be a problem for you but they are easy to make, well to someone with your capabilities it would be simple and interesting for you, any way as I always say everyone has idea's, good luck Adrian and well done again
If you want some natural light in your shop you could always replace a couple of strips of roofing with the corrugated clear sheeting. I've seen it on barn and shop roofs in strips for natural light.
The yard and animal’s are looking in good order Adrian with a healthy face on that silage pit. I know hehaw about shuttering but I’m sure the workshop will be a picture of efficiency with everything having and in its place with a few creatures comforts to while away the hours on projects. See you after
Another great video on animal welfare. Congratulations on fund raising so far. Agree with your workshop ideas and fire safety. Some good ideas from others about keeping the weather out of the straw side. For me two half sliders or curtain siders. Comes down to availability and cost. Busy time for you, thanks for sharing.
I would put up a big sliding door that slides over your roller door so you can load into the shed easily, you don’t want to be trying to get into corners.
Just a thought Adrian, did you consider using the front part of the new machinery shed as a work area that way you can get the big kit in for repairs, and use your fathers shed a a machinery shed for the smaller kit. Although the masseys won’t need repairing 😉😉😉 it’s a dry place for servicing tractors and the bigger kit.
Great to see that your fundraiser is currently @ €35,578 raised. You must be a wee bit chuffed I guess. Best wishes from New Zealand Thank you for your honesty in your post that launched the fundraiser. You touched on a very important & hidden topic that does affect farmers and their families.
consider using precast panels instead of building walls around the tool shed. It will make the shed more flexible, in case you want to change it in the future
Adrian a tip for easy removal of those teats from the feeders- a sharp blade like a Stanley knife, cut them off flush on the outside of the feeder, the rubber bit on the inside just drops out easy then. It's dead easy n quick especially when I used to have like 25/30 to replace at the start of each autumn. Nice video, loving your channel and work ethic.
You have absolutely smashing cows and heifers. I used them tags for years but found I had a lot of empty samples last year. I changed to a different tag provider and only 1 empty sample this year out of 50. The egg in the milk idea for the calf is a brilliant idea
Every day is a school day Adrian. First time saw putting egg in milk for calf, will keep it in mind for the future. Great to see calving well. Fantastic achievement on fundraiser. Will you be making a trip to Cavan Machinery Show this year?
Adrian it would be nice to have an all singing all dancing workshop but I think what you're doing is perfect. You can put all your tools in the one place and organise it as well as doing some repairs. The dream would be to make the whole shed a workshop but I like what your doing, plus when you're putting up the new shed beside the original one it's better to keep a few quid in the back pocket.
I'd close up the top side of the shed with two sliding doors, one in front of the other opening from opposite sides. That way you can have easy access to the whole space. Well done with the fundraiser and keep up the good work.
If you're thinking of having straw bales in there I'd say go full height on the doors or at least halfway up the front panel just enough to get a tractor cab under
I'd never put straw near that shed, fire risk etc. You will always need somewhere for the small machinery like log splitters & fertiliser spreader etc. Put you straw in a new shed where the roof is higher
Hi Adrian, well done with fundraiser, great initiative 👏 I would fit a full size sliding door that would open left to right over to the new workshop side. It would fit neatly under the front sheets and run past the 2 pole supports in the middle...👌
