- With the global economy not in the best state at the moment, you might be wondering if there is any way you can make some extra money using your creative skills. When I first started out doing lettering, I thought it was only going to be a hobby and nothing more, but over time it became, and still is, one of my main sources of income.
In this video, I’ll go through 5 different ways that you can start making money with hand lettering and I’ll give you some of my experiences, both positive and negative, trying to earn an income from these avenues.

Which of the 5 ways are you going to try out?
I just put my first design on Society6 last week and made 4 sales : ) Tiny step for humankind, huge excitement for me over $7 :D
Wow, never knew fonts were such a lucrative business!! You've inspired me!! Thanks very much!
I've only just realised you made Money Penny - one of my favourites!!
Your calm and informative delivery makes all the difference. Thank you so much for the inspiration. I love doing lettering, but thought I was wasting my “art time” fooling around.
Just discovered this channel (and subbed)! You seem like a really chill dude and your videos are most calming. Thanks for the content!
Great vid Ian, excellent advice and generous of you to share your knowledge and experience. Quality as ever.
Always very good vídeos Ian, Thank you very much
Greetings from Copenhagen
Thank you very much for sharing these tips, Ian! It's really helpful to get this information from you, especially the real world results and figures from your experience. Often people share the ideas with sharing actual results so this was super useful. Thanks again! 👍
Thanks Tamer. I've made a lot of mistakes but also had some successes, so wanted to share both sides, along with money made and lost doing so. Glad you found it helpful.
This is a brilliant video Ian. Made all the better by you sharing your experience of the financial ups and downs. Thank you. 🙌🙌
Thank for taking the time to share these ideas. Always been creative, now retired and able to devote more time towards creating.
That's an awesome position to be in now. Are you focusing on one type of style?
Always drawing, have spent sometime learning copperplate and formal scripts. Now leaning towards less formal, more legible styles. Also like to play with pen and ink sketches and watercolor overlays. Having free time is so new to retirement. I’m really not sure where I’m going yet but I would like to begin working on UA-cam again and maybe earn some money on the side. I have/had a UA-cam channel along time ago but I got frustrated and deleted everything. I can honestly admit that sometimes I have grown frustrated with my own creative progress and just destroyed what I was working on. I always regret it later on! Hoping to gain more confidence in the future and be less critical of myself.
Sometimes sell is so frustrating, I sell practice worksheet, and in general they sell good! Anything else that I have in my shop, nothing. I started to teach with an app and is going great! well I try to host a workshop by myself, no one get in there and that is so frustrating. Thank you for the advices!
Great video Ian! Helpful and informative. Thanks for sharing!
Very generous information. Many thanks.
Thanks so much Ian...another great nugget of wisdom from you! Thank you for all that you teach me along the way!
Happy to share the little information and experience I have!

Great video. Thank you for sharing.
wow! Ian, thank you for the tips! definitely gonna try selling prints on society6 or something and i’ll think about creating a font!
You are so generous sharing your info. Do you have any art background before you started hand lettering? Thank you.
Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown, Ian!!! I truly appreciate it : ) Where are you selling those prints that you mentioned? I checked your website but I couldn't find them in the shop.
Thank you!
Hey Ian, this is a good video. Thanks.
awesome video!! thank you!
Thanks for the video, Ian! I‘d love if you would show how to design fonts in Glyphs.
Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome
AMAZING video! I just recently started selling handmade cards, to explore more with lettering and drawing and make some profit out of it, since I can't find a job right now, cause of covid. I really like the wedding lettering idea! But how would I sell that service..? to wedding planners? to people directly? it's quite the specific thing to try and market by itself.
Thank you so much Ian for giving really useful, practical information. And as Tamer says (below) real live results from your experience. I also loved that your British. Like me ;)
Thank you Elspeth. I could probably do a whole video on just my failed business ventures.
Thank you very informative
Glad you found it helpful
Thanks for sharing! May I know if the procreate grids are drawn layers or real grids in the app function?
They are drawn grids. Act as stamp brushes.
These are excellent tips!
Thank you. Glad you like them.
@@IanBarnard Can you go a little bit more in depth on how you prepare and export the brushes to sell? How to export it correctly so there are now errors, and where you like to list these brushes? We have been refining a Procreate set for several weeks now and want to make sure it is set up properly for download.
Hi Ian, can you tell me please which application do you use to create font? And where do you sell them?
I use Glyphs app and I sell my font on Creative Market, FontSpring, Design Cuts and my own store.
@@IanBarnard thank 🙏 you very much

Your SpreadShirt seems to be doing well. Recently we've been trying out ads, but is hard work trying to figure out what does and doesn't work.
@@IanBarnard Some people I know make $ 1000 a day out of an daily advertising budget of $ 100 (shopify & fb ads), but I also know people who spend more on advertising than they earn from these advertisings :) idk
pinterest is my 'discovery of the month', for 'free product ads', 40k views, 10k users, in my first month, but only one sale, but it's a start, we will see, have a good one
