How I make Six-Figures annually selling fonts on Creative Market

  • Hey Guys,
    For the last 4-5 years I've managed to make a full-time living creating graphics & fonts on Creative Market. I started the shop Hustle Supply Co. back in 2013 and it quickly became my main source of income. I've been full-time on Creative Market since 2014 (4 Years - Crazy!) & I've managed to profit 5 figures per month, consistently on Creative Market alone.
    I know a lot of designers are interested in creating some form of passive income for themselves using these marketplaces. So if you have any questions, just leave a comment below and I'll get back to you - or potentially make a video on the topic.

    Thank you Jeremy. This is super helpful for beginners like me. Here are some points that I managed to write down (might not be too accurate):
    1. Create products you see yourself using / buying and WHY
    2. Create inspirational cover images e.g. whiskey bottle
    3. Pack product with value - no need huge bundle
    4. Find competitive advantage e.g. typeface + illustrations
    5. Don’t just stick with CM - spread your products
    6. Build followings in Dribbble, own website
    7. Snowball effects
    8. Create email list - release free fonts
    9. Be early adopter in new marketplace
    Looking forward to your next videos!

    Hey there! Love the video.
    I'm a big fan of letters and I love font making. A year and a bit ago I made a quick handwriting font just for the fun of it and posted it on Dafont as Donationware; out of the 22,000+ downloads it has, I profited a cool $0.00 from it lol.
    It was fun to do and I would love to be able to actually make some income off of it. What is your go-to sites for actually building the glyphs? I'm currently creating a 6-8 font bundle and for my testing, I've just been using the Caligraphr templates and site. Is this the best place to be or should I be spending my time elsewhere?
    Thanks!

      I would recommend "Glyphs", you can copy & paste characters you make from Adobe Illustrator into Glyphs and it's really easy to learn. You can also use 'Fontself' which automatically adds the characters, then use that in conjunction with Glyphs to speed up your workflow.

    Hi Jeremy, I just found you online and subscribe to your channel now. I want to start a passive income in creating fonts. I've watched a lot of UA-cam tutorials on this. Your advice is solid and the best I've viewed so far as I started hustling in a small business (different line of work) and I'd like to do it for this industry now. Can you make more detailed tutorials on how a beginner like me can start gaining a following on like Instagram without having to spend a ton of money? Your email list sounds like a good idea, but I got confused when you were talking about it. I've started putting my projects on Instagram and started getting more followers, but now not so sure what I need to do next. I just know I don't want to be wasting my money on UA-camrs to take their courses that might not give me the result/answers I am looking for -- sorry for long comment, but I need to learn more on starting my font making and illustration business and I don't have really the money unless it's solely for investing to grow my business. Thanks for reading!

    Hey Jeremy, great video and insight! I have a question, what was it that got you into design in the first place?

    • @JeremyVessey
      @JeremyVessey  6 років тому

      Hey Brody! I liked to draw when I was younger, but eventually got more into music - drums. When it came time to pick something to do for the rest of my life, it wasn't the first thing I thought of honestly. I remember wanting to go to film school, audio engineering, etc. Despite that, I ended up enrolling to become a Programmer. After 3 months, I realized I enjoyed the 'design' element of creating a website. So I dropped out and re-enrolled into the Graphic Design program a year later. It wasn't until graduating that I became very interested in Logo Design & Typography!
      Thanks for asking!

  • @mwhimp
    @mwhimp 6 років тому +6

    Hey Jeremy - thanks for sharing such great insights. What percentage of your time do you spend on marketing compared to designing? You say “passive income”, what does a typical work week look like for you?

    • @JeremyVessey
      @JeremyVessey  6 років тому +12

      Hey Aaron, thanks for the question! A typical product can take anywheres from 8-24 hours to create. This time may be dispersed over weeks or even months. It really depends on the designer. I tend do think a product out fully, so by the time that I sit down on the computer, it's just a matter of making it a reality. I've developed around 50 products (Graphics / Fonts) in close to 5 years.
      As I said above, a lot of the time goes into thinking about what products may sell, why they will sell, etc. But a lot of that is going on the back of my head. That's the reason that I feel it's like a passive income, because 1 product that maybe took me 8 hours is able to sell hundreds or even thousands of times and continue to sell 4 years after the fact.
      As far as marketing goes, I typically try to build a following using a variety of different methods. Sometimes I create a free product (Takes around 4-8 hours) - I also usually spend days on creating the images for my products on Creative Market as they are sometimes the main selling point. But a lot of the time I feel like I don't have a consistent work week. Some weeks I may work constantly on different products, personal projects or building a social media following, researching. Other weeks I may not do any actual design work at all.
      I just have a genuine interest in thinking about new product ideas & researching different marketing tactics, so it doesn't really feel like work. I listen to certain podcasts and watch content that's about marketing as entertainment so a lot of the times it feels like I'm not working. I'm also a huge fan of automation, so I try be as efficient as possible in the very short amount of time!
      Thanks!

    • @JeremyVessey
      @JeremyVessey  5 років тому

      I personally use Glyphs, but Fontself has been gaining steam and I see lots of designers using that now. I think it's $79 and it's a plug-in that works with Photoshop or Illustrator.

      @robgoddes 5 років тому

      Robert Godino Thanks for the response Jeremy. I have started playing around with FontLab. It’s awesome to lay out glyphs, combine glyphs etc but still doing most of my glyph building in Illustrator ... then just pasting them in. About 10 more characters to go and I’m done. Very exciting. I started designing my font about 15yrs ago. You gave me the push to finally build it.

    A bit too early for me to say if what I create works on the market, since I just started with the marketing aspect of what I do. But I have a question, you mentioned about creating your own niche, but how will that be possible with the fluctuation of bundles? It feels like you have to increase your quantity most of the time, and drop the price to actually be able to sell on Creative Market (in this case).
    Like one of the reason why Creative Market is currently "the basket" because they have bank wire, the other markets are Paypal only, and from what I come from Bankwire is the only option I currently have and the not so secure one is Western Union.

    • @JeremyVessey
      @JeremyVessey  6 років тому +3

      Hey there! Thanks for the question. Bundles do out sell many individual products. So the point that I was trying to make was create individual products that contain a lot of value upfront.
      For example, a lot of Bundles contain many products that could not have sold individually - But as a pack, it appears to be a deal. I'll talk about the bad side of bundles (Coming from somebody who has released a few). It destroys your previous SKUs. So if I had a product that was selling - once I release a bundle, those sales drop and every customer just purchases the bundle.
      So what I started doing was trying to pack value upfront. What I mean by this is instead of taking 10-12 old products and making a bundle... Create the bundle upfront. So for example. My product - "The Artisan Collection" is my highest selling product. It's essentially 4-5 products. But instead of releasing them individually, I created each font with the intention that they would be sold together. So instead of making a bunch of low value products and bundling them up in a year - I created a product that could compete with bundles.
      I won't lie, Creative Market has gotten difficult over the years. But I have seen new shops succeed in recent years. & I can't comment on the payment system as I have used Paypal as my main source of getting payments.
      As far as niches go, I'm not saying rewrite the book. I'm saying treat yourself as the customer and make products that you yourself would buy. This way, whatever you create is something you can use personally if all else fails.
      A big part of selling is driving traffic to your shop. So, focusing on building your presence on other websites can be equally as important as creating products.
      I hope this helps!

    • @epoknotdesign3538
      @epoknotdesign3538 6 років тому +2

      Thank you for the quick reply Jeremy. Well I didn't mean reinvent, if that's the way it came off then no that's not what I meant, haha. What I meant is, what I am currently making is a bit more niche based, like abstract/sci-fi stuff.
      (to avoid any kind of shameless plug will link the image directly of what I mean)
      cmkt-image-prd.global.ssl.fastly.net/0.1.0/ps/3498588/1160/3632/m1/fpnw/wm0/presentation-01-.jpg?1509404795&s=9c713db1cf8c1c2ab232fe296860c61f
      And now I understand the point you meant with packing up value into one product. Since that's currently what I am trying to do with the next product I am working on.
      And bundles is something I never understood why top sellers did it without keeping in mind what the long-term effect it would do to the overall market. Surely you sell more of the product if it isn't selling, at the same time you run the risk of devaluing your own products/services, like how I see a bundle of "16300 Graphics good " for $24.
      Bundles has been an on-going discussion on Creative Market Forum for quite some time now, without any change in sight. But I suppose only way to remedy it, is for shop owners to learn how to pack value into an item (me included) + doing your own marketing + email list (haven't started with this yet) instead of always blaming bundle (me).

    • @JeremyVessey
      @JeremyVessey  6 років тому +2

      Awesome! Love the aesthetic of your work. & feel free to share your shop in comments - no worries! When Bundles started to become a regular thing on Creative Market, I was worried as well and thought that I had to release them to keep up. But ever since I started packing value into products vs bundling up old products, I actually seen an increase in sales.
      The way I like to approach things such as Bundles, is to try to adjust to the market. This is true in business as a whole. There's no way to really fix these things, so I just try to build my presence on other platforms to push more traffic to my shop!

    What if i make and sell a font to a dozen people and and then i happen to see it all over the Internet few years later. Given that some fonts are very similar and then created to outlines, my question is how can I be sure thats my font and how can I take action of people stealing my fonts. I feel this will be a very long journey clamping everyone down stealing my work.

    • @JeremyVessey
      @JeremyVessey  3 роки тому

      This is very difficult and is a really big problem. I've seen my fonts distributed illegaly to dozens of websites over the course of 8 years. I've even had people pretend to be me and sign up to a website, upload all of my products with my name and a fake email address and earn money for nearly 6 months before I found out. It took a while, but I was eventually reimbursed by the website. I've sent cease and desist letters before as well. At the end of the day, when you're creating digital goods, this is one of the downsides. Unfortunately I don't have an answer. I tried my best to build a business online despite the rampant piracy. It just comes with the territory, unfortunately.

    Hello sir. Can I sell an EPS file handcrafted font? I don't have a font making app that can create OTF file. Hoping for your response sir. Thank you.

      I've seen this done before! But you'd label it as vector letters, not a font. So you'd upload it as a graphic. It's important to make sure potential customers know exactly what they are buying. So be very clear about what it is and what it is not. Thanks!
