hi friends, I just wanted to let you know that I had envisioned posting the "where my budget went" video (the one about corporate ethics) in this slot, directly after the check-in, but it's taking Joe and me a while to build the spreadsheet and enter all of the information. It's looking like that video might not be done until partway through February, and then hopefully in future months it will be quicker to make and I'll be able to post it closer to the check-in. In the meantime, empties and favorites and reckonings galore! Thanks for watching. xoxoxo

I'm using a Body Shop lotion and a Lush massage bar that both contain shimmer at the moment, just in daily life! I'm trying to reduce my ridiculous lotion collection so I have to use them up at some point, and I'd been saving them for a special occasion, but the occasion hasn't appeared so I've decided that life will just have to be that special!

I hope your hair appointment went well and that you're pleased with the results. Fellow long-hair here, I was thinking just the other day that I'm ready for a change and was considering long bangs and maybe even tinkering with my color a bit. I might even let the length grow longer again, I kind of miss my tailbone length--I was able to do some gorgeous updos and crown braids with antique hair pins and combs for decoration. Having a hair stylist that honors long hair is a beautiful thing, so many just want us to cut it off.

Please do a video about oils! I went a little overboard with the ordinary and I'm having a hard time understanding what I need!
I'm still in an experimental phase with skincare and hair, my skin and hair have changed so much in the past two years ( a mix of getting older and having to take lots of cortisone for a full year).
I'm on a budget so I don't use this as a excuse to buy mindlessly and you are helping so much! ❤️

At 62- The best eye cream ever is actually a good pair of large sunglasses that cover up a larger area around the eyes. I’m pretty reactive to a lot of “actives”. I’m happy with Clinique’s All About Eyes but over time the thing I think works best is good quality sunglasses with a recognized rating for complete SPF

    • @eikawithac
      @eikawithac 5 років тому +4

Yes! Sunglasses are important for your eyesight in the long term as well. I sometimes feel like the only person who consistently wears sunglasses throughout the winter but the cloud cover here (PNW) actually turns the sky an all-over blinding white and I feel like I need them more when it’s overcast than under blue skies!

I love that you include how fast the products are used up. Before I followed you I never thought of how much skincare was costing me a year, I laughed when I saw your calculations of the cost of your skincare habit and thought she's crazy..... then calculated myself, seriously not far you, hence did a U turn and changed my shopping habit. I love the skincare version of the "Shopaholic" you have on this channel and the honesty of that the price of skincare is a huge factor to consider when buying beautiful things. Love and Greetings from Sweden.

It’s amazing to me how once I stopped buying all the beauty products I didn’t want to spend as much on my different categories . I also realized that I need a simple routine. My mornings don’t allow for anything complicated, and I just won’t follow through with a multi step routine in the evening. I’m enjoying using up the bits and bobs I have while finding out what I truly want and don’t want, and it’s saving me 💰!

Could you make a skincare basics video describing how expanded your knowledge of skincare ingredients and developed your skincare routine? You seem to have a clearer grasp on what you're looking for, what's necessary, and the utility of each product depending on the ingredient profile (vit c, ceramides, peptides etc.) than I've seen on other channels. There is so much information out there it's hard to know where to start and what to trust.

It sounds like you were ready for a hair cut anyway, but in the future if you want to try and preserve rough feeling ends it's worth trying a strong shampoo as well as a deep conditioner! Build up and damage can feel really similar, so whenever my ends are feeling really nasty I do both a coconut oil long soak and a thorough shampooing with the straight up, SLS, no bells and whistles shampoo.

I know you're sad about using the body butter with shimmer before bed and not for tango. On a positive note, the Fenty diamond veil does the same thing for me. After lotion, I take a big fluffy brush and put it everywhere i want to shimmer and glow while dancing. You have it too now, so I'm hoping you can enjoy it that way also. Haha! I love that book stack in the background. I've got a stack like that on my headboard ready to collapse on my head.
I don't love the Atelier colognes because they're pricey but you really have to layer more than one to get any sort of complexity.
As for lotion, I think most mass produced lotions have a high "greasy" quality that doesn't absorb well, where a small batch product will probably have more expensive dry oils like hemp, and maybe it will be whipped, both of which give a better finish on your skin.

I had eyebrow length bangs for five years and I loved them. It took me a year to grow them out and now I miss them! However, I am in the process of transitioning my hair back to curly/wavy with the curly girl method and I don't want to have to deal with styling bangs right now, too. Plus, some guy told me I looked like a school girl with my bangs and that's a look I really want to avoid, especially with my height and baby face.

I can confirm, Nuxe is a French brand ! This product is one of their cult products, though I'm not the biggest fan of it (I find it too dry an oil). However, they have a beautiful lip balm if you ever manage to find it in the US ! It's the "Reve de Miel" ('honeyed dream' I believe ?). It's insanely rich, but so effective ! And it tastes like honey and candied orange ♥

Following your tips for training hair, I am on day 9 and my hair is so volumized and piece-y, I actually had to wear a beanie this a.m. just to kind of tamp it down. It's out of control. I have put no volumizing product in my hair since day one...(I used a small amount of mousse). Eye Cream recs: Paula's Choice has an eye cream with Vitamin C that clocks in at half the price per .5 ounce of Drunk Elephant. I've been loving the Bioderma eye cream which is $20 for .5 ounces. It doesn't have C, but my eyes don't tolerate that. I have had it for 6 months and it's still going. It deals with my puffiness, which is my main eye issue. I use it twice a day because it's fine under makeup.

I was intrigued to here about a brand of skincare formulated for sensitive skin. However, looking at ayr skincare's ingredients for a few products I wouldn't say, the formulas are free of irritating ingredients. That eye serum is not as bad as some of the other things I looked at, but it still has ingredients known to cause irritation in some people. Ayr uses citrus extracts and essential oils like tangerine oil, lemon extract, bergamot oil. I also saw rose extract/oil and rosemary oil. They make a point of saying they don't use synthetic fragrance, alluding to their use of other fragrance ingredients, which are added for experience not for skin benefits. There's a photo touting their ingredients that includes slices of citrus fruit with a heading mentioning how natural the ingredients are, so their inclusion was purposeful and plays into their narrative. This is a problem I have trying to find products that are truly for very sensitive skin. A lot of companies that are ingredient conscious focus more on ingredients being 'natural", so they'll use essential oil blends instead of synthetic fragrance and potentially irritating extracts instead of synthetic preservatives. I get that a lot of people who want "clean" wholesome feeling products are drawn to this kind of branding and mentality, but natural doesn't = better for the skin. It's frustrating for me that the feeling and positive connotation of certain ingredients seems to be more important to companies than creating products that are actually better for the skin. Lavender oil is a great example. People like that it smells calming, but it can be highly irritating, causing inflammation with no benefit to the skin. There are even products aimed towards infants with lavender in them, even though it's a terrible idea for such sensitive skin to come into contact with it. I know I'm off on a tangent, but it's discouraging every time a brand or product is marketed as being good for sensitive skin and I read the ingredient list and learn that sensitive skin apparently doesn't cover skin sensitive to fragrance ingredients, even though everyone's skin can react with inflammation/contact dermatitis, if a large enough quantity of those ingredients is present and some of them are sensitizing so the more you're exposed to them the more likely your skin is to have a reaction. "Sensitive skin" has no set standard, but I think it's disingenuous and/or ignorant of a company to use such a phrase when they ignore the issue of fragrance ingredients.

    • @rachellopez8357
      @rachellopez8357 5 років тому +1

Zillie yes! I am very committed to fragrance free products because I do have sensitive skin, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that even if they don’t think their skin is reacting poorly to fragrance, it could be causing inflammation without any symptoms in the moment. Most of my products are Paula’s Choice and cerave for that reason! You’re not alone! I feel like putting fragrance in skin care is such an old fashioned idea. We’ve known for a long time that they only cause harm. Same for jar packaging. It sucks hat so many luxury brands are just not making choices in keeping with science.

Skin care junkie here who used to spend WAY too much. Although I love the concept of Drunk Elephant, and have used and enjoyed a few products, I feel they are overhyped and overpriced. (Check out Glitzy Fritzy Drunk Elephant review). I have evolved to be much more ingredient driven and have found some great products at reasonable prices. Love Timeless, Cerave, Mad Hippie, Hada Labo, la Roche Pose, Elta MD,... (check out Glitzy Fritzy Mad Hippie Review). BTW, Glitzy Fritzy is hysterical if you want a fun video to watch.
And YOU my dear Hannah are at the top of my favorites list. Very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the indie brands.

I found Dr. Dray (here on UA-cam) and she turned my skin care regimen upside down. And her reviews of higher end products helped dispel my FOMO. I know exactly what you mean about your hair and the split ends and I am the same way as you about haircuts. But when the ends get to a certain point, there is no doctoring them up and they have to go. My hair stylist just cut off some dead ends that I’ve been ignoring for months and months. My ends were so dry. There was more length that could have been taken off, but she is doing baby steps with me every other month. Lol!

I looked at all the ingredients and reviews and I'm purchasing it right now as my first eye cream (just turned nineteen last month) it's sixteen dollars and I think it's a good start. I don't want to spend 50+ dollars on eye cream just yet and by the looks of your skin, neither should you.

If you are looking for a good eye cream I love the shisado eye cream! It is quite pricey but I have used it every day (mornings and evenings) for a month and I have hardly made a dent. I can truly see this lasting a full year! I recently finished the c tango eye cream and I thought it was just ok, the shisado version is so much better.

Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara is a great dupe for Too Faced Better Than Sex! You get the same effect (plus a little more volume) with no flaking. It's still pricey but I just buy the minis since I toss my mascara after a few months anyway

    Hi Hannah!
My absolute favorite sheet masks are from CVS, it’s the peach slices brand which is a Korean brand! I love the “hydrate” and “calm” ones. Other sheet masks make my face burn and these are one of the only ones that smooth my skin, plus they are $3! I also love their hydrate peel off mask, doesn’t hurt to peel it off at all! (Even my boyfriend likes that one!)

I loved this, as usual! I wonder if you’d like the eye cream by Paula’s Choice. It’s about 35 dollars for 0.5 oz and it’s very hydrating. It has a Shea butter base and also has peptides. It’s the only eye cream I’ve used that really moisturizes my super dry under eye skin.

Really interesting earrings! They are calming and intriguing. I will check out the site. I agree about long hair - there's no way around having to get some cut off from time to time - I mean, a good tidy up. It's just environmental damage, but getting the ratty bits cut away feels so good: hair looks thicker and healthier straight away. For good mileage with skincare, I discovered Elizabeth Arden by accident. I got a two for one deal on day cream: £35 for 2 x 2.5 oz pots and I am still not even really halfway through the first pot, even though I got these towards the end of last summer. More importantly, I see such a difference in my skin. When I come to replace my eye cream, I am going to try this brand. The sales assistant said I would easily get a good six months out of a pot. Based on the day cream, I trust what she said. It might seem pricey to pay out £40-£50 for an eye cream, but if it lasts me for 6 months or more, and makes a difference, then it's worth it for me.

    Hi Hannah,
I know you don’t do subscription boxes but have you ever heard of beauty pie? I tend to use it for certain products. The premise of it is that your getting luxury skincare at cost price. I would be really interested to know your take on it. Caroline Hirons has done a video on the brand and the concept and she really endorsed it. I recently purchased their vitamin c capsules which made me flash back to you talking about your vitamin c oxidising and I thought this type of product could be a good solution.

You can make sea salt really easy yourself. Than you can ad as much epsom and normal salt as you like and make it as heavy as you want.
There are a lot of ways to make it, I like the one with epsom salt, normal salt (just boil some water and let I melt), aloe Vera gel, almond oil, vitamine e oil (conservative) and some perfum oil for the sent.
Love the product, it’s natural and you use a lot less plastic. ❤️

The same mini-mascara thing happened to me with the Dior show mascara. I got one of the mini sizes from somewhere and I loved it SO much that I actually spent the $30+ for the full size (🤦‍♀️ which I didn't have the extra money for). I hated the full size of that mascara!!! In the big size, the formula was one of those "just ok" mascaras and what was worse was that I noticed a super strong perfumey fragrance that I didn't notice in the mini. It was so strong it made my eyes burn! (Seriously why would someone put fragrance in mascara?). I still kick myself for making that purchase!

I spray texturizing spray into the roots right at the back of the crown of my head and then rub my fingers on my scalp in circular motions to sort of tangle the hair there and make it poof up, if that makes sense? Not the most professional tactic perhaps but it seems to help.

I love that tarte timeless smoothing primer so much. Not the jar but that’s okay. It’s almost identical to the Tatcha silk canvas one tho the tarte is better. And I’ve found a straight dupe, L’Oréal magic skin perfector. So great 💕
But I hate better than sex. I hate the Wands of these. I don’t understand them. And I don’t get all the love they get. The L’Oréal one is just as useless. But I’m really liking “they’re real” by Benefit.

I love how helpful and articulate your reviews are, and that you make a point of saying how things work for you, since everyone’s skin/hair/etc are so different! I was just curious listening to your skin care products, have you looked into Paula’s Choice skincare? They’re probably a little big to be considered an indie brand, but as a woman owned company very focused on science and ingredient based skin care products, I would be very interested on your thoughts of the company! (I use them and love them for full disclosure, but I’m just curious and have no ties to them 😊) Side note - your new lighting looks amazing!
