    Discovering your channel is the best thing that could happen to me. I was seriously thinking about a No-Buy period and you really have inspire me to do it. FabFitFun Add-Ons are on right now and I'm only buying things that I really need, to replace things that I no longer have, unlike other occasions, where I bought things "just to try" Tks for your videos. BTW Looove how long your videos are and your style. Keep it going.♥️

    Hannah! About to embark on an ambitious no-buy, I’d love to hear more on your panic buying before the clock ticked to Jan 1/18 lol. Because I found myself doing the same. I’ve shopped like never before but I still think I will save money overall and learn something and hopefully get out of the habit of accumulating too much. I look forward to having a curated, thoughtful collection that each item gives me pleasure.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      My panic buying wasn't TOO out of control, but I definitely stocked up on things like underwear, and I bought an extra pair of sneakers because I tend to wear out my shoes. And there were two or three more expensive things that I probably wouldn't have bought under normal circumstances, like a silk dress and that Le Labo detergent. I didn't panic-buy buy a bunch of small things, but rather I indulged in a couple of big things. In retrospect, I don't exactly regret it, because I love most of the things I bought. But I would have regretted going wild in the drugstore or buying up a bunch of lip products at Sephora or something like that. I think at that time I was already starting to feel weary of my over-large collection.

    You have been using up an amazing amount of products! You must have gained a lot of space back in the closets, cabinets... That’s a great thing! I’m happy ever time I finish a product. While the money might be long spent, finishing something makes me feel like I’ve gotten my money’s worth.

    It took me almost an entire year to finish a 500ml body wash/bubble bath and by then I started not liking it, so I now know I dont need AS big a bottle of whatever product I choose next; probably It's Raining Men.
    I've never truly loved the laneige water mask but I wont go without their lip mask. Its lasted me since January and I'm still not done despite using it every night. Super good cost per use for me.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому

      I'm also a serious lover of that lip mask! I agree, it lasts forever.

    • @Puglover130
      @Puglover130 6 років тому

      notafangirl you know what, I’m also a very slow user of products like conditioner, and especially dislike lotion etc.. I may use 3 a year and that includes my pre-makeup moisturizer! And then I watch empties videos where it’s a months worth and the person has like 7 empty body washes, 5 x $85 candles, and 18 lotions and I’m like WTF?? How is it possible to get through this much?!? I have been saving all my empties since Jan 1/18 , I thought it’d be fun to see at the end of the year the rate of speed in which I go through things, anyway I am not evendone filling ONE basket yet. And it’s August!

    • @notafangirl
      @notafangirl 6 років тому

      @@Puglover130 7 months and not even 1 full basket of empties is actually pretty cool to me😁 I do a small monthly basket but that's more to keep my head financially in the zone. Yeah using up products that fast makes me go 'eek!' Because then I think I over used the product, but I suppose to each their own, at their own pace.

    If you like bar soap you could try Yorkshire soap factory. The sents are really good, and the bars can last 6 months too a year or longer. Made with Shea butter so you don't need body lotion after unless you have really dry skin. :-D I currently have "rainy day in hebden" and it's lasted me over a year using it every day

    The only it cosmetics thing I like is the bye bye redness powder. Hides my rosacea better than anything I’ve ever tried. I love ulta. My Ulta just got Chanel. I find ulta to be less intimidating. I buy most things there. The only brands I buy from Sephora are hourglass, Marc Jacobs and Drunk Elephant. I’m trying to fully switch to Ulta. It’s closer and their rewards are so much better.

    You might want to look into ulta’s rewards program. It’s better for some people than Sephora. You get actual money off instead of samples. It they carry some of the higher end brands you like it might be worth it for you

    I need to try Le Labo at some point - I like the same sort of scents - strong, spicy, sexy scents. Cleopatra by Tocca is my signature scent for Spring-Early Fall, and then I switch to Colette in the late fall and winter. Both of these scents are divisive, but I never fail to get tons of compliments from men and women when I wear them. I like the slightly masculine vibes of both of them, especially Colette, which has a tobacco note. Totally evocative of Colette. Citrus doesn’t agree with my skin chemistry - it smells soured and fermented on me. I learned this the hard way in high school with an unfortunate experience with Clinique’s Happy. Love your empties videos. I have quite a pile going. I’m saving the packages from the entire year of 2018 so I can do a blog post about how much I used up.

    If you haven't, you might read about the founder of IT Cosmetics. She's pretty impressive and the products are very good for covering hyper pigmentation. I think they've since sold to a larger company. Also, it wasn't designed to be sold on QVC, they just got their break there. I mean even Tatcha, Tarte, and Josie Maran sell on QVC. Money, money, money.

    Have you tried Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre? I've been using this as my night cream for a few years now. It's super emollient and creamy, has a lovely but not overpowering floral scent. It does not break me out, and I always wake up feeling so moisturized with super soft skin. It's also not that expensive--I think about $22 on Amazon. I'm a big believer in the French pharmacy products, especially Embryolisse, Avene, and La Roche Posay. Also, if you ever feel like switching SPF creams (I can see from your videos that you're quite devoted to yours), the La Roche Posay Toleriane moisturizer with SPF 30 is uh-mazing. Very moisturizing yet sinks right into the skin, and again, around $20 a tube. I love your videos--found you by reading your essay in VQR!

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому

      Hi Thea, I've never tried it! Thanks for the recommendation. And it's amazing that you found me through VQR! I love that! I actually am looking for another SPF, as much as I love mine I've decided that it's just way too expensive. I'll try to get a sample of the La Roche Posay, I've gotten a couple of recommendations for that one.

    • @crazlylegs2
      @crazlylegs2 6 років тому +1

      Wow, I just googled you. I'm doing my MFA at UMich right now! Going into my second year. I really loved the VQR essay. I too started indulging in the beauty gurusphere after the election, obsessing over skincare as some bizarre capitalist form of self-sustainability and self-care. I've been trying to pin down *why* I enjoy UA-cam and smothering my face with creams and serums, because as a writer and reader I often feel so silly and wasteful in my love for these things. I really connected to your essay because it tapped into that feeling of indulgence-as-recovery while also breaking down class, race, and beauty in a lovely, nuanced way. Anyway, thanks for doing this work!

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      WHAT??? No shit! Small world! Thank you so much for your kind words about my work. I started writing nonfiction while I was at UMich. I was there as a poet, but I took Eileen's class and when I started exploring literary nonfiction I was like "where have you been all my liiiiiiiiife!?!?" I was in the MFA program during the election, and my post-election descent into UA-cam obsession was kind of a dirty secret of mine while I was there (because of feelings similar to those you describe). Now it's turning out that a huge percentage of my nonfiction writing is about that very thing, so I guess it's not a secret anymore!

    I'm a big fan of your no-buy series and I'm inspired to do my own, so thank you!
    I just wanted to question your sheet masking routine. I don't know if it makes sense to put the mask on after you've done all of your skincare first, surely the essence from the mask can't penetrate the skin properly and be it's most effective if you put a barrier (moisturiser/serum etc) on first? Typically a sheet mask should go on after washing your face and before your serum.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 років тому

      I usually mask after serums but before moisturizer. I'm less concerned with getting the mask's serum into my skin and more excited about using the mask as a barrier to evaporation so that my more expensive active serums can have time to completely absorb, if that makes sense.

    The problem with those comedogenic ratings is that it's not an exact science, it's based on how many people in a control group break out from a given ingredient. For example: coconut oil rates as highly comedogenic and I've once met someone who could only cleanse with coconut and not break out. Meanwhile, jojoba oil is widely known as non-comedogenic and a safe choice for most skin types. Not me! Within 30 minutes I'll start breaking out.
    So the moral of this story is, these ratings are a good guide, but they are not solid facts and we just have to try everything and test it on ourselves

      I think trial and error is always wise! Argan oil breaks me out, but I believe it's a 0 on the scale.

    So I just found your channel the other day and haven't heard or read this question answered yet - you've mentioned that you started this channel to keep yourself accountable for your no buy but are you continuing your channel in 2019?

      Hi Christine! Yes, I am going to continue! The project will change slightly in 2019 but the channel will be here :)

    Hello, Hello
    I come in peace. I am 67 years old I have great skin no wrinkles, however my face is starting to sag. I realize now there is no cream or portion that correct this effect other than plastic surgery. If there was a cream that would make me look like Hannah I would mortgage my home and even sell my first born (just kidding about my first born) From my opinion and mind you it’s only my opinion consumers spend billions of dollars selling a fantasy. And yes you are right eating healthy will keep you slim, but can you promise someone in their early years they can only have healthy skin if they routine consists on multiple expensive products. I can only speak from my own experience my grandmother only used ponds cold cream had the skin of an angel and my mother only used soap and her skin was flawless. They both had beautiful skin if they were alive now they would cringe on the thought of spending so much money on face products. However everyone is their own individual and if it makes you happy go for it! No judging just unsolicited advice from an old lady 👵

      Hi Doris, it sounds like you have great genes! Thanks for watching and commenting. xo

      Hannah Louise Poston that’s so true. I find that genes have a lot to do with. I’ll be 40 on my birthday and people think I’m a sister to my 13 year old or a girlfriend to my 18 year old. I take care of my skin but really think genetics play a huge part

    I think once my last bit of Good Genes is gone I'm going to try the Paulas Choice Resist Advanced Smoothing Treatment 10% AHA, good lord could the name be longer please. It's a combo of acids including lactic. We shall see what I think of it. I love what Good Genes does for my skin, but I think the cost has always kept me from using it as consistently as I should have for best results. Actually I also have the Tarte Tingling Treatment to get through first. I don't want to have multiple chemical exfoliants on the go! You inspired me with you Z palette to depot a few of my singles. I love single shadows but don't often make the effort in the rush of getting ready for work to search out a single shadow, but now they are in my Z palette and getting some love.

      I love my custom palette so much! I think I'm entirely converted. It reminds me of a painter's palette.

      Agreed! I'm contemplating a couple smaller palettes also so I can have all the colors I enjoy in one place.

    I know I'm way late to the party but I've been watching/listening to your videos literally all afternoon and I've surmised that you probably smell faintly of body odor, bergamot, amber, and probably some other mysterious scent and usually that's the type of human I find myself drawn to. Just a funny quip I thought you'd appreciate

    Perfumed products are really not good for your skin, not to mention risking being a scent bomb to everyone around you. All Free and Clear is not only much more economical, it doesn't include any scent or coloring agents.
    In a similar vein, CeraVe has excellent skin care with no added fragrance or colors.

    Great job Hannah, but you are young beautiful lady do you really, really need to repurchase all those skin gimmicks? You don’t need them you have natural beauty. Have u consider maybe going organic?

      Hi Doris! I appreciate your concern, but as I said in the video, I've done a lot of research and trial-and-error, and I'm happy with my current routine! I'm in my mid 30s and I struggle with acne, dryness, texture, lines, redness, and scarring. Without powerful skincare you would be seeing a very different face on the screen :) Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Doris.. are they gimmicks if they work?
      Plus, I agree Hannah has a beautiful glowy complexion, but advising her to discontinue her skin routine with no info as to what her “before” looked like, ie how much her routine is helping, is kind of crazy. It’s like telling a skinny person there’s no need to eat healthy because they’re thin.. disregarding the obvious that’s the reason why they’re thin to begin with!

    You might want to look into ulta’s rewards program. It’s better for some people than Sephora. You get actual money off instead of samples. It they carry some of the higher end brands you like it might be worth it for you
