    Four hours in YOUR presence. We don't know how many hours he spent learning to kite before he got to you. You can watch videos all day but at the end of that day you still have to perform. So four hours, before anyone gets ticked is only four hours that we know of. Congrats to BOTH of you guys !!

      Wayne Everett he watched videos but it was his first 4 hours with a wing and motor. He raced ATV before so the coordination was there. I don’t think it’s hard to launch and land, or fly for that matter m, when conditions are perfect.

    I'm "self" learning ground handling with an old wing (airwave wave). I know its frowned upon in this sport but the way I see it is I can learn 50% of what I need to know from youtube and get a head start for when the lockdown ends to get some real 121 instruction and hopefully get in the air as soon as I can travel. I'm thinking of posting clips online to let the experts of UA-cam criticize the hell out if it. I Should get some productive comments as well as a few insults no doubt.

    • @MarcAmenson
      @MarcAmenson  4 роки тому +1

      I think that's a good way to go. There's a lot you can learn from watching videos and practicing on your own. Then when you're ready to fly, get a good instructor to make sure you're doing things safely and help you get your first flights. The key is to learn the correct habits, and fix any bad habits you may have formed on your own. All the best!

      Out of curiosity which wing do you have? I started out Paragliding well over a Decade ago. Riding Thermals and Ridges un-powered is very relaxing after hiking up a mountain. With the right wing you can use it powered or unpowered. Like my current Ozone Buzz Z4 wing. For a 2012 wing it's held up rather well.

      Robert, training is not a joke and you should know better. I know for a fact that you have talked to pilots on your show that would never condone such a short amount of training. In fact what I have heard many of them say is that you should spend a lot of time kiting to improve your skills and stay safe. You seem like a good dude to me but when you join the Dell haters and say things like you did here I just feel disappointed in you. Dell trains his students well and I would know as I am one of them. Taking the time to master your glider is never wrong and having the level of skill needed to "kite up a trailer" could only ever help you as a pilot.

He's not winning a friend in me because of his poor way with words. Go back and listen to what marc said in this video. This was not Marc enlisting people to fly without any training. These guys were learning everything they could before they got under the wing. If you really care, join our conversation on paragliding talk tonight when we go live. Awsome video Marc, I always look forward to yours and Kyle O's, Tuckers and Matt M. videos for learning. One comment about the take offs. A young man was killed on take off when he was getting in his seat. He used his hands while brakes were not stowed. He stalled his wing..... So just make sure students are aware not to pull brake down when trying to get into seat.Sounds like common since but in the excitement of the moment you don't always think straight. Keep Flying and stay safe.

      Ashley Evans I love watching those guys videos also! I'll have some more coming out very soon. About the stowing the brakes when getting into the seat, that is one of the most important items that I discuss with the students. • @MarcAmenson
      @MarcAmenson  6 років тому +2

      David65702 I think it's so important to do the 4 major physical steps 1. Kiting 2. Power Walking 3. Simulator/hang test 4. Motor on back kiting. Then add perfect weather and huge airfield, boom! Recipe for success. After that it's a lot of stuff like weather, aeronautics, meteorology, maintenance etc. all things that are important also but can be learned through videos and books.

    • @VanyaD88
      @VanyaD88 6 років тому

      David65702, If you actually did go to Super Training and you didn't fly it was because you were not ready period. Dell does not put people in the air who are not ready. How is that a bad thing? I think that instructors should care enough to train students all the way and if they are still not ready to fly then instructors should say as much. Taking a little longer to master the skills you need to stay safe is never the wrong thing to do. Most likely though you are just trolling.

    • @David65702
      @David65702 6 років тому +2

      I actually did go to super training 2 years ago in June, I never said it was Dell's fault I twisted my knee 3 days before the end of training and was never the same I could have flown the last day but the winds where to much for me, half the students never made it in the air so I don't feel like a total loser, it was because of Dell's training that I am flying today I fly a trike but I'm flying because of super training and about 8 to10 hours of Dave Jewell's training finished me off and I was flying, that's how close I was to flying at super training. Only blaming myself, maybe his style of training wasn't the best for me, Mo was ready in 2 days.

I want training but like Dustin I have done my research, watched all the videos and I plan to do ground work on my own for many days and hours and then I am wanting some training. No one will do hourly training. They all want $2500-$3500 for full training or nothing. I just don’t think I should have to take the whole course the same one someone who has never flown let alone on their own and someone who has never flown with a parachute or wind conditions and when to fly and when not to like I already have. I just want some training to figure out the differences and safely take my first PPG flight. I am going to be forced to self train which I’m confident I will do great at but I’m trying to take everyone’s advice and get training but I’m not willing to spend thousands of dollars on it. Edit: it's nothing like flying a plane (much better imho), but after you've learnt the basics, your PPL will stand you in good stead. For recent example this Kyle O vid

    While congrats are in order for your student having been able to fly after only a few hours, I would caution you to at least protect yourself in the future, by having students who opt not to take the full course of training as offered, sign a waver of liability, or they don't fly. This is because, in the future, should the worst happen, regardless of what that student may have promised you in person, his family could come back with a suit against your estate for allowing him to fly without the full course of training. He's an adult, free to make his own decisions, but you just never know, these days. Get with a legal eagle, and have them draw up a standard waver of liability contract which every student must sign, containing a contingency for declination of full course completion. Other than that, thanks for the video.

    I am fine with a guy not training for flight skills... It's just that a lot of locations are being lost, because of GUYS... who never learned. Proper Etiquette!!
    It's the one thing learned from being around schools and pilots... that is missed by guys that go solo......
    It's killing the sport

    Marc, no angry rant here but I do have some thoughts. Paramotor training should never be rushed. Yes it's true that a few here and there will learn faster than others but that is no reason to rush things. This sport is inherently dangerous, as all extreme sports are, and the reality is that not everyone will survive the learning curve. If you want to instruct then you have a responsibility not only to your students but to the sport itself to do everything you can to first master the sport yourself, including putting in the years, and then training students correctly and thoroughly. If they get themselves injured or killed because their training was rushed and they just weren't ready to go out into the world and fly then that is on you. Training should never be taken lightly and I think that four hours is too short by far and just irresponsible. Experience is necessary to fly safe and that will never come quickly or easily and no amount of video watching can substitute for actually hands on training. I am going to ask you a tough question here and I want you to think about it - Do you truly believe you have the experience and skill to instruct? I'm sorry dude but a couple hundred hours of flying really isn't that much and from what I can tell you have rarely if ever had your skills tested by real world scenarios. I just think that you have rushed into being an instructor and you are not ready yet. Get mad at me or ignore me if you want but I hope you will give my words some serious thought.

      VanyaD hello and thank you for your comment. Also thank you for respectfully letting me know your opinion. Every instructor has to begin somewhere. Even if I was flying for 10 years and only flew in safe conditions in a safe area then what more what I really know? Are you suggesting that I fly in unsafe conditions so I learn the limits of our sport and that will make me a better instructor? What does Dell Schanze know that makes him so magnificent? How to kite a glider on the ground and fly like a maniac? I am not teaching an acro class, I am not teaching an advanced pilots class, I am teaching new pilots how to safely and confidently fly their gear. I tell all my students upfront exactly where I'm at with experience and what I will be teaching them. I do not take training lightly, and the pilot in this video would have flown on his own with no instruction, so I offered to help. He had already met with another instructor and was definitely not impressed, that's why he came to me. I always appreciate feedback and thank you very much for your viewership!

      Marc, no I am not suggesting that you fly in unsafe conditions. What I meant was that you have to challenge yourself to become really skilled. Kiting for short amounts of time in light winds just won't do it. It takes hours and hours and days and days of time kiting in the different modes and in stronger winds to really develop true reflexive response. Once you develop reflexive response you will be infinitely better at preventing and dealing with collapses. Why should all pilots do this? Because even a good pilot on a calm day flying in the morning or evening who is not doing acro can run into trouble so why take the chance. It is not just Dell who says this btw. I have heard this all over from pro paraglider pilots who say that in order to be really skilled in the air and to be really good at preventing and responding to collapses you must put in the time kiting and kiting correctly. Your feelings about Dell have no bearing on the truth of this and I think you should consider that. As for what makes Dell so magnificent? Well, he has spent decades training and learning to fly in every type of weather at every elevation you can fly a paramotor at all over the world. He originally trained with the US paragliding team captain. He was told once by a pro that he was on their top 10 list of those who would die and Dell actually listened to him and corrected his flying. He has had the means to test many, many gliders and paramotors and has a wealth of knowledge about them. I will leave it there but there is more. Anyways, I just believe that learning reflexive response through intensive kiting is necessary, is one of the best ways to keep yourself safe and should be included with any paramotor training. Just some things to think about.

      Everything you said here makes total sense. All pilots\students should kite for hours and hours to be as skilled as possible, myself included. I guess the only thing to do is continue kiting and learning, I intend to do that and encourage everyone else to do the same. A wise pilot once told me, "If you're not trying something new, you're not learning." At some point we balance our desire to fly with our desire to sit on the ground with a kiting harness. I will be as safe as I can, and will learn as much as I can, and I hope everyone else does the same. 😀

    I have a friend that had a powermotor given to him. It's about 20 years old, and has been kept inside since new. We were trying to get it started one night, and I noticed the two wooden props were on backwards. Made me wonder if this thing has ever been flown. We We took the props off and turned them around, but one broke, so he has tried to fly it with just one prop. Well, it finally cracked too. The motor sounds like it needs a carb, and we are not real sure what kind of engine it is, or what size prop it needs.My freind has never flown a paramotor, or anything else, but insist he can fly this. I'm afraid he is going to kill himself . He built his own cart for it, but I think this one was made to wear on your back, without a cart. What do you guys think, is he certain to get hurt, or should he just jump on it and give it the gas?

      Lee LaFarlett sounds dangerous all around. Tell him to see an instructor. This is flying, do it wrong and you will get hurt, break gear or die. Not worth the risk.
