George Michael had an amazing band. He was incredibly loyal to them and they to him. He even payed them when they weren't touring. :)
The fact that they were mainly black wasn't an issue, he just wanted talented people. Though he was a big supporter of equal rights and was very pro social justice. There's never really been ghettoisation in the UK, in the way it existed in a lot of US cities and towns. Even in areas where a lot of black people lived, there would always be plenty of white people too. Not to mention people with origins in the Indian subcontinent, or East Asia. If someone were to describe an area as a black neighborhood, in the UK, it may be 40% black, at most. I think a lot of British artists, who have gone to America, have found some of the racial attitudes hard to deal with. The Beatles, for instance, insisted on a clause in their tour contracts, that said they would not play to segregated audiences. In the 50s and 60s, a lot of black American artists, virtually unknown to white America, were idols in the UK. It was their influence that sparked the first 'British Invasion'.. When MTV started, British artist were among the first to criticise it's exclusion of black artists. See this MTV interview of Bowie, where he turns the tables on his interviewer and can barely contain his disgust at the response: ua-cam.com/video/XZGiVzIr8Qg/v-deo.html When Craig David, a black British artist, went to America, music exec's wanted him to drop his band because it was mainly white and they felt it wouldn't fit. He refused. There's an endless stream of such stories. I'm not saying that racism doesn't exist in Britain. It does, of course... unfortunately. However it does appear to be less entrenched and much less acceptable.

I agree with you, George stole that show and he showed the wirld he's no longer the other half of WHAM & gained so much respect amongst not only the lidteners but he's pierce!
He was so great that Queen wanted him to be frontman which he said no to (GM is my fave singer but he cant sing Queen songs like for exampke Adam Lambert, it's just different voice, GM was R&B/Pop!
But GM's interpretation of "Somebody to love " I actually preferd than when Freddie sang it 🙄 (or is it sung)
?) anywho, Freddy had the best voice for many decades, but George did something magical to that song and I love that Queen & George Micheal ft Lisa Standsfield made cd and each penny went to Freddies HIV foundation, it was amazing and it was before George became the male version of Madonna (IF you can say that) but Michael pushed boundaries by making "I want your sex"l 💕
Anf he made European and Asian ppl love R&B because he was able to mix genres and he used he's fame to introduce "new" music (it was new back then) by singing R&B, making collab with Arethe Franklin just before he released "Faith"!
Ppl today don't know how much George did for musicians today, musician knows.
It's odd to think how similar both George and Freddie had almost same upbringing, same hiding in the closet but Freddue came out the day before he died (everyone knew he was bi, but it was more acceptable back then) I think everyone kniws how George came out 🤪 (but he made it easier for future male artists too)
      I agree 😁😉✌️

Please look up info about George Michael. He holds a few records in history. He made the "black charts" and was considered a blue eyed soul singer. His band, Wham! also broke barriers as the first Western band to perform in China. As for a song or two to showcase his voice, definitely the aforementioned Freddie Mercury tribute, Somebody To Love. My personal fave A Different Corner, Jesus to a Child (it was written about his partner who died from HIV/AIDS complications.), Careless Whisper, along with the Aretha, Whitney and Mary J duets. The Aretha one won a Grammy for them both, in the soul/r&b category which ticked off a number of people. One More Try, Father Figure. Essentially you can't go wrong with him.

I was just listening to a vocal coach who said George was the better singer than Elton. You could hear the change in the bravado of the song when Elton came on. George’s actual singing talent was apparent until Elton came on, then not so much. It became like a competition. According to him Elton is a great musician and songwriter, singer not so much. No comparison to George. Also, it’s not Elton playing the piano.

This performance has significant meaning even then. They had feud over 1985's Live Aid, using Elton's song and George didn't let Elton sing his parts. In a nutshell, George treated Elton as a session player on his own song. 1985's Live Aid was a BIG deal Worldwide! They

George always had a majority of black members in his band, and i can only think of one time where he had a white back up singer , you can listen to his body of work and hear how soulful he was...he did duets with Aretha, Whitney and Mary J , Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson...just fantastic music !

George Michael was so underrated. His voice was one of a kind. The reason why Mariah and Adele and Leona Lewis are around. His voice was so uncomparable that even the Queen of Soul herself had done a duet with George Michael called *KNEW YOU WERE WAITING FOR ME.* I wish back in the day people took George Michael's voice seriously the way Michael Jackson, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandrose, David Bowie, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and Prince had taken him. Elton John and George Michael were solid with those voices.

This was a major performance. George was going through a Hard Time professionally and Personally. His Lover Anselmo would eventually die of AIDS, and he was going through alot of issues with Sony. He wanted to get out of his Contract but they wouldn't let him. Elton John and George worked with each other before, on a Song that Elton did called Wrap Her Up. The Two of them along with David Furnish attended Princess Diana's Funeral where Elton Sang an alternative Version of Goodbye Norma Jean. Also this was the Second Time Elton went to Number One with his Own Hit. Shortly afterwards Elton would go into Rehab to battle his Demons including Drugs, Alcohol and Bulimia. You may not know this but The Brits have always revered American R & B. From the 1950's when the Beatles started out, they would cover Little Richard, Chuck Berry as did the Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds that Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton & Jimmy Page started out in. Elton was also influenced by Little Richard as was David Bowie. The Beatles also covered a lot of Motown Songs in the 1960's from Money, You Really Got A Hold On Me, Shout & Twist & Shout and Please Mr. Postman. For this music Generation a lot of Boy Bands & Girlbands "Cover" obscure R & B Songs. In fact The Music of Motown & Philly Soul has been featured on Soap Operas, TV Shows, and have been Covered on Reality TV.

This is EPIC!!! My favorite hands-down! George Micheal is an entity all his own as is Elton of course! Luuuuuv this song/ performance! By the way this song is an Elton original...not sure whose "band" it is for this performance...probably a combo of both....

George Michael saw a lot of talent in Black music and really tried to highlight it and learn from it. It was kind of silly when he was accused to "stealing from Black music," but he took it well and just tried even harder to highlight the talent that inspired him. He did a duet with Aretha Franklin too that was pretty good.

I'm not sure if the band is George's or not, however, check out his more of his works on U TUBE. a note also check out his band members. With WHAM and the next 10 to 15 years, many stayed with him through his solo career. And the next set another 15+ years. Some though it all. That says a lot. He has many black professionals in his band, He had only the best for his music. You should also listen to the Freddie Mercury tribute. George sings Somebody to Love. He knocks out of the park. If you really like George Michael, do some more of his music. You won't be disappointed, I promise. I love to see your reactions to his music. Please do more. Thanks, Be safe and healthy.

I sincerely hope that after (or before) you have exhausted the many great works of George Michael, you will do a deep dive into the many great works of Sir Elton John. There is not enough space here to list the numerous masterpieces that Elton along with his lyricist, Bernie Taupin, created together. Only you can discover this by checking out not only his hits but also the many album cuts that rivaled his hits but were too mature for commercial radio. Songs like Have Mercy On The Criminal, All The Girls Love Alice, Social Disease, Better Off Dead, Talking Old Souldiers; I could literally go on and on. I truly do not understand why more of his music isn't reviewed, knowing what I do about his extensive musical library. Please see the video of Elton John/The Oven Manuel Song. It will give you a new perspective on this most talented superstar.

This was one of Elton's first performances after getting sober. He was nervous about doing this as he wouldn't have a piano to hide behind. I think that is why he let George take the lead and heavy lifting on this one. It hit #1 which did better than Elton's original back in the 70's. Great songwriting by Bernie Taupin and you can't go wrong with Elton and George. React to any of George's live performances and you won't be sorry. I usually prefer them over his recordings. He is always absolutely pitch perfect.

In a time when 90% of the music is just garbage, there actually was a time not so very ago when artists like George Michael and Elton John made some of the best, most heartfelt music in history. Auto-tune and lip-sync were unheard of and not needed, because real voices and instruments ruled the day...Many of today's artists might be remembered for a decade or two....George's and Elton's music will be listened to as long as there are people still around to hear it...RIP George!

Devon DaVinci I suppose this is what is referred to as a generation gap I was 12 (George Michael was 11) when Elton John wrote this song and it had a deep meaning for me already back then. I would never think of it as just a suitable OST song but you are from a different generation it is worth the same that it does not speak to you in any other way. This is a Bernie Taupin lyric, a timeless work of art like all the others. As for having black musicians in bands I can only say Europe is a different world.
