  • The Iron Ring is a ring that is given out to Canadian Engineers before entering the workforce. It serves as a reminder of the ethics they learned, and the obligation they took to serve and better society. This video, we look at the meaning behind the Iron Ring and whether it holds a subjective, more personal, meaning.
    To me personally, the ring reminds me to consistently challenge myself. The only way to improve and be better is to overcome hard obstacles. As hard obstacles become easy, new challenges need to be made.
    This video was a challenge for me. I stepped out of my comfort zone to produce it, but I'm super excited to finally share it with you guys. I hope you enjoy it, and learn a bit about the tradition and meaning behind The Iron Ring.

    I have one on my pinky, it's the most valuable piece of jewelry i have for sure. Every time i see the ring, it reminds me who i am, and my obligation of perfection for whatever I do.

    I'll show these to some of my students. The Iron Ring is truly a symbol of something for engineers. For me it was a reminder a constant reminder of my obligations and the priority of that obligation in 4 four years of difficult practice due to a difference in opinion and outlook between me and my bosses. Thanks for posting this.

    I think the ring and the ethos behind the ring is cool, however the society is amiss in keeping this to Canada, the world would be a better place if all engineers in the world subscribed to and were a part of this tradition.

      100% agreed. Especially since engineers design major structures like bridges and buildings. I’ll retell a quote I heard in school “a doctor can take 1 life with a mistake, an engineer can kill 1000s with 1 mistake”

    To most people that ring is just a ring. But to Engineers that ring is an oath and a ring of promise.

    Question....I am currently a retired Power Engineer. I was in a 5 year study program with the Northern/Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, while putting in the required hours for the program, in heavy Industry, back in the late 70s-1980. I have 32 years in heavy Industry, and was a Power Engineering Instructor for 10 years. Am I allowed to wear an iron ring, or do I have to have a University Degree?

    • @DanielMoy
      @DanielMoy  9 місяців тому

      You would have to check with the Alberta engineering chapter. I’m not too sure what the answer is to your specific situation

    I really liked the idea of a symbol that reminds one of their duties and the legacy of past engineers. I have not graduated from that Canadian University but being an engineer who loves his job, I would get myself such a ring (or make one myself) and wear it with pride.

    • @Sahil-mx9ry

      P.S. Not exactly a replica of this ring. Just a silver band for the pinky finger.

      I did my engineering in Computer Science and I am working as a Software Engineer from past 4 years.
      It's a never ending learning cycle. As of now most of my time is spent getting better at Computer Science (because I am relatively new to the field) but I have started to like other fields of engineering as well. I can't imagine myself doing anything other than making, breaking and understanding things. :D

    • @DanielMoy
      @DanielMoy  4 роки тому +1

      I don’t think it’s weird at all! You do need to go to a Canadian university however to qualify

    • @vannesasoria6279
      @vannesasoria6279 4 роки тому

      Kind of late to reply. But you need to have gone to a Canadian university to participate in the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer and get your ring. You can't just randomly start wearing it since the ring is a reminder of the oath you said at the ritual. Some universities in the US have a similar tradition however. Their ring is different though ; it's smooth without facets.

    Where does the iron from the ring come from? Why is it an iron ring?
    There is an important piece of information missing from this video.

    • @DanielMoy
      @DanielMoy  2 роки тому +2

      The iron is just iron from anywhere. It’s a misconception that it comes from the Quebec Bridge collapse in 1907.
      Why iron? It’s a common engineering material.
