  • After participating in an iron ring ceremony, graduates from accredited undergraduate Engineering programs in Canada are given Iron rings. These rings, at times called Kipling rings are a symbolic representation of humility and pride that Engineers have in their profession. In this video I share the origins of the Engineering iron ring and how Rudyard Kipling, author of the jungle book developed the "Ritual of the Calling of the Engineer" info about the secret iron ring ceremony. Last, but most importantly the impacts of the Quebec bridge disaster to the Canadian Engineering profession

    Ottawa U grad of 1978. The iron ring ceremony is still one of the high points of my life, even more than being commissioned as an officer in the Canadian Navy. Just replaced my lost iron ring (sigh) for a stainless one. Do miss the feel of the iron one. The new stainless one is so shiny, lol. Good job on the video. I wonder how many give back their rings upon retirement?

      Incredible that you had the chance to watch this video! Cool to know that even after so many years the iron ring remains a high point in your life. Gilles Samson, how much maintainace does a iron ring require? Do you have to lubricate it every month or so? Also, is it annoying to take off while washing your hands? Curious to know how the experience is compared to the stainless steel, now that you've switched over

      @@OsamaBaig I never did anything special to maintain the iron one. Wore it all the time even when swimming not even when washing my hands. I did notice a faint bluish ring around my finger but it washed off easily enough, but i never really noticed it. The stainless ring is shinier than the old one but other than that not much of a difference. Not many people know what it is, nor what it means, unless they are another ringed engineer.

    Very cool to hear about the ring(s) more in depth! I only learned last year of the oath and how seriously things were taken in Canada when I watched a special about that very bridge and how it all lead to our unique Engineering programs. I didn't realize there's one for Nuclear engineering as well. Arg... makes me wish I had pursued that rather than IT.

      Yes, the Zirc ring is super cool! Special to Ontariotech (not as much history involved) however its made from fuel bundles (empty)! Its never too late Aaron :)

    I know this video is over a year old but I need a question answered, I have just finished my corse in aerospace engineering and I really want this ring, but the problem is that I live in the uk and I was wondering if it was disrespectful if I bought an engineers ring and wore it?????

    • @OsamaBaig
      @OsamaBaig  8 днів тому

      I feel like it would be a bit disrespectful since the ring is given out by a specific organization. You should reach out to them and let them know your credentials and why you want one, maybe you can try to see if they would be willing to invite you to calling of an Engineer ceremony

    Pssst. I could've made that ring for $40. /s Kidding aside it's a very neat ritual we have. Laymen like me who build something can't use the "engineered" word. That's reserved for people that wear the ring.

    • @OsamaBaig

      Haha you can make it for $5, the metal is super cheap. Doda, people like you who are physically building infrastructure are doing just as important of a job. You are taking some incredible risks and those are appreciated by society. Without you, designs would only be in conceptual phase, you make it happen!
