While bombers are often associated with massive destruction, the Petlyakov Pe-2 earned its place in history as a silent, efficient predator-precisely choosing its targets, striking with unparalleled accuracy, and disappearing before the enemy could retaliate. It was not the loudest bomber, nor the most visually imposing, but it proved that in the art of warfare, precision and speed could achieve much more than raw firepower.
Yes, thank you for a nice video. A couple of points: 1 - The "Carousel" wasn't unique, the Ju 87 pilots called it "la Cadenza" when they did it. 2 - Similar tale with Tupolev and the Tu2. He was in the Lubianka. For a real fund of info on all Soviet aircraft, see Bill Gunston's book "Aircraft of the Soviet Union". A heavy tome written in almost telegram English so as to condense all the info into the book - big as it is.
Great episode! I will admit that I have been critical of several videos on the various "Dark" series of channels, but this is not one. This was very well done! Great film clips, great research, and great writing and narration. Damned well done! I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you very much. I have had no love for the Soviet Union under any circumstances, but they did occasionally get something right and this PE-2 bomber was certainly one.
Good looking plane and looks quite modern. ( seems that the russians do some of there best work behind bars ??? ) Thanks for the upload enjoyed watching it. 🙂
A great video and narration! If Stalin had not been such a psychopath, those executed or imprisoned scientists, Marshalls, Generals and Colonels could have done so much to mitigate the unbelievable disasters that fell upon the Red Army during 1941 and 42.
I used to think I was as versed on aviation as a non pilot could be, but you continue to expand all of our knowledge; I had heard of this plane but not how versatile it was and especially about the tragic loss of its creator. I would ask one thing that would help me, and possibly others too, when you mention something like “a flame dampening exhaust” maybe you could explain why that is a great enhancement. I would guess that, on the surface, it makes it harder to spot at night?
You might be surprised at what a skilled pilot in a dive bomber can do. Dive bombing was a different game from level bombing. And then there was the Mosquito, which famously put a bomb through the front door of Gestapo headquarters.
Very interesting aircraft. This video is very informative, and it makes me wish I could see an example of the aircraft in person. I wonder if there is still one in existence. You would think they would keep such machine around to honor the compliments of it designer's and the crews that flew it and what they experienced and sacrificed to bring it to life as well as risking and giving their lives flying it.
So if twin engined aircraft like this and the Mosquito were able to be so fast, why were the Germans never able to bring the ME 110 up to this sort of standard?
That "carousel" attack reminds me of what I read of North Vietnamese pilot's tactics during the Vietnam War against the US Air Force until we got wise to it and made it pointless. But I imagine, for the day in the early 1940s, it was rather innovative and effective.
The term carousel became synonymous in memoirs as a dogfight and bullets use a term which can translate as arrows. The design resembles the Mosquito only as a two engine attack aircraft. The design was commonly used. Since, the Soviets waged a battlefield tactical air war, the Pe-2 seems to have been relegated exclusively to close air support and light bomber. Great video.
As Germany spent most of the war with less than 3 months reserves of oil, the Ploesti oil fields were well protected. Witness USAAF casualties when attacking them.
Mossie was faster (Mossie was faster than just about anything in WWII that didn't have a jet engine) and Mossie wasn't a dive-bomber. Also Mossie relied on speed, there was no defensive armament. And Mossie was considerably more versatile--there were bomber variants, fighter variants, dedicated attack variants with heavy cannon, and carrier-based torpedo bombers. The fighter variants could hold their own against FW-190s. I suspect the UK missed a bet in not producing a Mosquito-based escort fighter.
When I first heard of "Operation Bagration", I thought it was called that because the Red Army soldiers had to survive on just 1 bag of rations for the operation. 🤷♂
Fun fact: the Green Berets on this OP called in so much ordnance that missed their targets that they were forced to have an AirForce Combat Controller attached to them to call in future air strikes.
Laughable! Parroting Soviet tall tales about these planes being able to drop bombs down the chimneys of bunkers just reflects how gullible this content producer is. That's something even small drones have issues with today. A Pe-2, by the way, was the last plane shot down in combat between German and Soviet aircraft.
Petlyakov,s 'Peshka' , seriously cool bomber designed in a prison cell that saved Russia from defeat by Psycho Hitler and fat Herman. Peshkas performance even more remarkable considering its two cloned Hispano engines low pony count , around 1,150. Well Einstein ?, think of Petlyakov,s Peshka with two Packard Merlin 38,s, 1,600 of Uncles Sam,s best ponies fresh from the Kentucky Derby.
Please refrain from using "taking the (whatever) by storm." It is a useless phrase that means nothing unless it is in reference to a worthless object being hawked as the latest and greatest thing. I watch all of your videos and like your content but I NEVER EVER watch any video that is "taking the (whatever) by storm.
Good video Dark with a lot of relevant video keep it up

Yeah, we just saw the video.
Unlike other allied powers who just poured incendieris to cities at night.
Does anyone else see a resemblance to the British Mosquito?
Petliakov-2 and 3 where in combat before even model of Mosquito was made
@kwestionariusz1 Yes, and do you suppose that the DeHaviland designers might have been influenced by the PE-2?
Not really. There were many twin engine attack aircraft with twin tails that look similar, rather than the single tailed Mozzie 🦟
Shit ya at first that's what I thought it was
Not really other than twin engine

That's what I'm talking about. Excellent documentary. Thank you

Great content as always! Thanks for putting in the extra work by using your own voice. It makes a huge difference!

I do some of my most memorable work IN bars - particularly on "Ladies" nights .... Giggidy!!

If Stalin hadn't been such a psychopath, he would have been killed and replaced by someone who was. It is the way of totalitarian states.

@@frankmcgowan9457 How can Russia break out of this cycle? It could be such a great country, but this cycle reduced it to perpetual disgrace.
Communism is sociopathic… 😂😂😂
Funny how there's never been a movie or a TV show made about Bolshevik Russia Cheka atrocities

During the second world war there was no such thing as "incredible accuracy" 😅

What a great country Russia could be if the best and brightest weren't imprisoned, tortured, and killed.

Excellent video Dark Docs ! Thank you.

Symply the best!
The more I hear about this Stalin guy, the more I think he was a real jerk!
He killed more people than hitler!
Evan bombers that had the Norton bomb site did not have pinpoint accuracy.
Neither did the bombers with that crappy sighting system
Great video as usually :)
Just one remark plese consider dot say YAK as letters but like word or Yakovlev - letters souds (to me) strange :)
Это звучит странно даже для такого американца, как я.
I didn’t see anything about a sniper model of this plane your tagline says something about a sniper bomber so disappointed
Typical Dark Skies rubbish
Yes they did 14:40.
Yet another CLICKBAIT THUMBNAIL. Typical Dark Skies 👎
I have read that the PE-2 was one of the first to have a pressurized cabin. Is this correct?
Nice work bloke
It's pretty much a metal version of the mosquito, a British plane I believe
Mossie was faster (Mossie was faster than just about anything in WWII that didn't have a jet engine) and Mossie wasn't a dive-bomber. Also Mossie relied on speed, there was no defensive armament. Some of those pilotettes are cute enough.
Its been a while since ive watched this channel. When did he start speaking slowly?
It looks beautiful
Never heard of this aircraft before. Curious. Perhaps the Brylcreems were too miffed at being left in the dust!
When I first heard of "Operation Bagration", I thought it was called that because the Red Army soldiers had to survive on just 1 bag of rations for the operation. 🤷♂
Still trying to figure out the thumbnail..
What is the song?
Once in a while the Soviet Union got it right, despite itself. Isn’t it typical that the PE-2/PE-3 was designed by a prisoner of the USSR?
Great story I enjoyed it. I did not know anything about the airplane.
It looks like a beefier version of the mosquito.
But then again, everything Russia builds is built tougher
It is a tough country in every way.
Fun fact: the Green Berets on this OP called in so much ordnance that missed their targets that they were forced to have an AirForce Combat Controller attached to them to call in future air strikes.
Fun fact I was a Green Beret and called plenty of close air and didn't need a Combat Controller, or a TACP.
Heyyy I might have that in mobile War Thunder… it’s FIRE 🔥🔥
Ehhhh nvm I don’t have that…
Great documentary on a ww2 plane I knew nothing of 👍🏻
Thanks I had no idea about this plane seems like a really goof unit
Was this plane used during the Vietnam War? 🙂🙂🙂
The Soviets always find a way
like number 666, for the second time today 😂
Complimentary algorithm enhancement style of a comment!😊
1940 Wasn't the Russian's allies of Germany at that time and had invaded Poland ?
No notice again.
I often wonder how much tech from what was sent to Russia in lend lease was used in their own aircraft.
All of it.
BF-110 look a like
Except BF-110 wasn't a dive-bomber.

Thanks!
But,not "pieshka"!
It's "peshka"!!!
Kursk Was this airplane designed by a Ukrainian?
USSR don't do nothing -
One of Solzhenitsyn's books, "The First Circle", was set in a sharashka. Worth a read.
Soviet history is boring AF. Russia today is still boring AF.
