Pegmatites can occur in metamorphic rocks as igneous intrusions. The existence of pegmatites heavily implies re-melting through intense heat caused by the metamorphic process, making the rock an igneous as it as completely re-melted; but the rock remaining was only partially melted, so you have igneous inside of metamorphic.
Dan you are a prospector, not just a gold hunter. Don't worry about those that don't like the other videos, they can always choose not to watch them and stick to the gold ones.
My boyfriend is a geologist and I asked him about the pegmatite. He said pegmatite is an extreme intrusive igneous rock, but it is found in greenschist facies metamorphic rock all over the place. I don't know what all that means, but apparently it's definitely found in metamorphic! So, you're right :)
In plain-ish English, basically pegmatite comes up through the existing rock as magma intrusions and cools crystallizing into the sapphire gems. The heat from the magma intrusions aids in transforming the rock layers into a metamorphic rock seam.
If you heat metamorphic rock up enough, it eventually begins to melt. This area was at the perfect point to melt some of the rock, but not all, and then cooled to leave igneous rock (pegmatite) in the areas that melted and metamorphic rock in the areas that stayed solid. Source: former igneous and economic geologist.
@@MulletDestructur You are describing contact metamorphism. It is not metamorphic from regional alteration. It is metamorphic directly from the intrusion.
I used to work for an older woman She always talked about her star sapphire and I remember driving her to her safety deposit box at the bank she got all excited that she had someone to show it to 🤣she probably hadn't seen it in many years but when she showed it to me I instantly knew why it was in a bank and not her safe at home . I will probably never see one as big or beautifully as hers but I will always be fascinated by these beautiful gems . Thanks again for taking us on the hunt with you
Most of us watch , to watch what you find , either Gold or Gems , makes no difference , we just enjoy watching you !! And that you include your family , bonus !!!
I have a geology degree and back in Minnesota as an undergraduate, we studied "hard rock" geology, aka petrology. I think the confusion could arise that pegmatites arise from close association with igneous intrusive bodies, but they are actually commonly at the top of the mass and are from "dewatering" or when the igneous mass loses its water and a lot of cool minerals come with it and out of solution, like mainly silica, but could be micas and even feldspars, and of course, for economic interest, gold and other valuable mineral and gems, in with the crazy coarse mineral grains formation which are due not to slow cooling, but super slow precipitation and cooling. This Metamorphic rock was probably very close to a huge igneous intrusion, what that metamorphosed it, and the pegmatite pushed up into it. There is a complete gradation between igneous intrusions and very coarse metamorphic rocks, and sometimes it's only the remnant bedding in an otherwise igneous rock that clues you into that it is metamorphic.
I, for one, really love the gemstone and mineral collecting videos because I'm just a geology nerd first and foremost. That's why I got into the prospecting videos in the first place!
Ya , me too. Nothing against gold and all but minerals and crystals is where my intrest is. Unfortunately for Mr Hurd I do not buy the rocks And minerals I collect, . That ocean picture stone is tempting though.
Yep, gold is just gold, a technically useful (electronics!) mildly pleasant looking metal (i much prefer silver for jewelry). Gems are near infinite permutations of simple building blocks reshaped by unique natural conditions. Much more interesting.
@CJ yep, certainly silver sapphires! Have a bunch, no pyrite for SURE. Black, brown, silver, yellow, pink, blue, greens...orange, even, too. Loads of fun to play with!

Estimado Dan, muy hermoso es la geología y más con prospección de gemas. Buen trabajo y más feliz ver que sales con la familia. Hermoso trabajo. Soy geólogo y me gusta la gemología. Sigue adelante!!
Honestly, I prefer the videos that aren't about gold now, unless there's something extra to the gold ones. You've done a great job teaching us about gold, but every time you do a gem video I learn all kinds of neat new stuff. I think the best ones are where you're doing a combination of enjoying the prospecting and showing us something new.
Love the content you make and your personality, I used to love collecting fossils and rocks on the beaches with my mom. Now I have two boys and my oldest loves collecting rocks from everywhere. ❤
I love star sapphires. Purchased on while I was in India and I wear it nearly every day. It's such a mysterious and surprising little gem! I'm thrilled you found some on your claim! Might just have to get some :)
They're a real kick! To get a good star, though, the cab has to be domed high enough for the star to really pop. You won't often see a shallow cab of this stuff.
Hi I just came across your video and I don’t know if you have ever considered it but the women are very into acrylic nails and they would absolutely buy the little gem stones to put them on the nails. Just something you might want to consider. The nail industry is a billion dollar industry. I just wanted to give you another way to make money doing what you already love to do. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful video with us. God bless and happy prospecting.😀😀
I have had a fascination with sparkling rocks since I was a child of 2. Rock, mineral and gemstone collecting has been a hobby of mine my whole life. I have some amazing specimens of polished and raw minerals.
Love your content in general! Always educational and has inspired me to look for my own claim sometime in the near future. Would love to see a video on how you go about looking for and securing a claim!
Panning for gold is fun..those little specks are so shiney. I also luv pretty rocks. When I was a kid I would crack open rocks just to see what was in them.
Love Lapidary goods!! thanks for the fun If you did just feather wedges on top holes and leave bottom holes empty it'd pop out easier, 4-6 wedged on top 6-8 empty on bottom Hope you wear a respirator when drilling them holes!
Dan! Because of you I fell back into my interest in gold and I started binging your videos maybe a year ago (So glad to see your growth!) And I started buying/saving in gold in silver, I have 2oz of gold and 32oz of silver. You remind me of my grandfather and you've helped my mental help a lot just by being you and I just want to thank you ❤️ Next thing I really want to do is pan for gold
I love all your adventures. My dad made beautiful jewelry from gem stones. I used to find some along the Fraser and creeks in the Caribou. I enjoy this so much.
I have to say I prefer what you are doing now Dan. I love the gem stuff too, it reminds me of rock hunting in some of those same areas as a kid with my parents. I truly enjoy your content, keep it coming!
You are making great memories with your family and those boys will have all your videos to show their children when they are older. That's something alot of kids can't say nor do, but you making these great videos and teaching millions of other people and their children what can be found in the ground if they would slow down an just look. In today's world everything moves way to fast, but you my friend are showing and teaching everyone to slow down an just look at where they are at an they might find a rock, gem or chunk of gold they will will always treasure an keep an pass down with a story of how they found it to their children. I Love your videos buddy and one day your boys will say, we had an adventure since we were born because my Mom and Dad made our lives an mainly our childhood so much fun we didn't realize at the time but he was teaching us all about rocks and we say thank you for that dad.
Dan, rocks that have undergone high grade metamorphism can undergo partial melting, and when that melt starts segregating, it forms bands of migmatite, which very much resemble pegmatites. The only difference between pegmatites and migmatites is that pegmatites form from melt intruded from elsewhere, but migmatites form in place.
I like gold but I grew a fascination into gemstone way more than gold. Beautiful finds. Not many people realize the powers the crystals have. They are really magical and have healing benefits ETC
No, I love the general prospecting! Back when I was in my teens, we went on vacation to Canada, Alaska, Sweden and Norway where there are loads of rocks! I always was fascinated by the discolorations and apparent colors seeping out of mountains like rust or salt. I've always been told there was nothing of value, but when I look at what you chop open here... I was right and my parents were wrong!
Lovely finds! About 43 yrs ago I had purchased a Star Sapphire and a Fire Opal that I was going to have someone put in to 2 ring settings. I had them in a small tin, however, before I had a chance to have that done I lost them to a house fire. I have since got a Fire Opal ring but have not found a Star Sapphire for a ring that i could afford, and still can't. It was nice seeing one again on your video, they are beautiful.
Sapphire is my birthstone & my Dad got me a black star sapphire when he was in Thailand during the Viet Nam war in '64. It's surrounded by six tiny blue sapphires (dark blue regular sapphires) & I love it dearly. My mother also got one, surrounded by rubies her birthstone - lol. One of my favorite rings is a turquoise I got from a trading post in AZ when I was in college - beautiful turquoise blue color, with imperfections even a tiny hole in the stone. I really love it & the handmade silver setting it has, made by a local Native American artisan in the late 60's.
I prefer watching the gemstone recordings. I’ve always had a passion for gemstones anyway. I’m so glad to see you enjoy doing this and I’m learning a lot from you.
Last summer, I was working outside when my area got a record breaking heat index of 126F or a bit of 52C. I didn't notice any difference from the normal 100-115 we normally get in summer, but the others I work with acted like you in the heat. Love your gemstone videos btw.
I mean you are Dan hurd PROSPECTING. You are not just gold, that's what I love about your channel you cover all aspects of geology. The gem videos are definitely some of your best content in my opinion
I recently bought a house in a historic part of AZ and dug up a bunch of soil, uncovering someone's rock garden! Lots of large quartz gems, tons of geodes, and even plenty of schist chunks with garnets, tourmaline, and sapphires just like these! The area is on the edge of the Mogollon Rim and has tons of dead volcanoes, with all the rich minerals they bring.
Looks like that the metamorphism happened long after the stratigraphy layers were laid down and possibly when the clasts of pegma were deposited in those layers maybe. Doesn’t line up on how it usually goes down but some times it do. Great vid Dan!

I personally love gemstone hunting, I've always been interested in rock hunting.
Dan, I love all your treasure seeking adventures!😀
Dan, I'm big fan of everything you do. I love the adventure side of it, so to me personally it doesn't matter what you're searching for! Thank You for all the hard work & I'm also glad to see you're doing great since your last hospital stay!
Wow, Dan, the family is with you and they enjoy the field work with you. You are a good man, Dan. Love seeing you harvesting the saphires, etc.
I love watching anything you put up on UA-cam. I’m 58 an learn a lot from your channel. Thanks for what you do!
Yay!! Dan I love your mineral collecting treasure hunts
That is really awesome to be able to bring your family and teach your kids on the field.
I just like watching your adventures! you do what makes you happy and makes you money!
Panning for gold is fun..those little specks are so shiney. I also luv pretty rocks. When I was a kid I would crack open rocks just to see what was in them.
Love the gemstone and lapidary content!! ⚒️💎
I love watching all your adventures! Gold, garnet, BC ocean picture stone, smelting, & more. Love it all ❤️❤️❤️
Greetings and well wishes to those who care!
Greetings and well wishes to you my dude, my guy, my dude-guy
Lady says "can you refrain from throwing the rocks in the ditch?" Dan says "sure I will get Dana to clean them up"..lol classic Dan😄
Love Lapidary goods!! thanks for the fun
If you did just feather wedges on top holes and leave bottom holes empty it'd pop out easier, 4-6 wedged on top 6-8 empty on bottom
Hope you wear a respirator when drilling them holes!
I like all the adventures. Any kind of prospecting. Rock, mineral, gold, it doesn't mattter. It's all good. Keep the fun coming and don't melt! 😷⚒
That black star sapphire in the thumbnail, absolutely favorite mineral
I really like the mixing of gemstones episodes into the videos. Learning a lot too.
Beautiful stones Dan, you all did well in finding and getting them out. God bless, all of you please take care and thank you for sharing 🙏👍❤️
I have to say I prefer what you are doing now Dan. I love the gem stuff too, it reminds me of rock hunting in some of those same areas as a kid with my parents. I truly enjoy your content, keep it coming!
To be honest i love the gemstones and rocks WAY more than the gold panning:D
Aw you look seem to have a nice family. A very wholesome venture you have going on.
I like these gemstone videos. Teaching me knowledge on what a lot of these precious rocks are that I have no idea how to differentiate etc
Thanks Dan!
Everyone does gold. That's why I like you Dan. You don't do what everyone else is doing. Keep doing you!
Thank you Dan and family for another awesome prospecting video :) I love gold and silver, but I also love gems and crystals. I love how they all form.
Dan and family these videos are fantastic! Thankyou for the way you put things with the knowledge behind it.
I appreciate your transparency in the economy of prospecting, makes sense!
I love the feather wedges. The pingybois make such great noises.
For what it’s worth Dan, i enjoy all your videos. You are quite the character and your adventures are always entertaining!
Great vid Dan!
i like the fact you do rocks too. they are far more accesible to obtain too! My 23 and 25yr old and i love rock hunting.
Aquamarine and garnett are two of my favorite gemstones. I'd love an Aquamarine video. I love both your gold, and gem prospecting videos.
