Hands down the best version of this song ever performed and recorded..thank god future generations..maybe hundreds of years from now can look back at this masterpiece👏
As a proud Irish man, Wexford man and Rathnure man I sing this song where ever I travel. I live in killanne and my house is on the site of Kellys homestead... I bring my Kids to John Kellys grave regularly . One Irish legend singing about another. Powerful stuff REMEMBER THE MEN OF 98
+new bridge This man who this song is about. He was a leader in the '98 Rebellion and was hung on Wexford Bridge after he was captured by British forces.
Phil Coulter: "Always, always in the forefront, leading the charge was that voice again. I refuse to think of Luke Kelly in the past tense. He will always be a part of Irish music and Luke's songs will always be his songs only...In the days, weeks and months ahead I will listen again and again to Luke's records. I will cry a little, I will remember a lot, and I will savour every moment. And I will still get goosepimples every time I hear that voice again."
Kelly was beautiful. Luke Kelly RIP. As wild as his hair. Such a talented performer. People know about Elvis and Johnny Cash. But who remembers Kelly? Well I do and millions of Irish
Never again will 5 men come together and form a band like the Dubliners - amazing how these 5 great musicians were all around at the same time and all found each other
This song is no doubt the best example of gaining back the fighting spirit - even after a dreadful loss . Glory to those great men who fought for the freedom . I carry that heritage from my finnish forefathers. Today this is everyday life for our brothers in Ukraine. Slava Ukraine!
I can't even begin to express the total joy the noise of those five men bring into my heart. RIP Luke, Ciaron, Ronnie and Barney and long live John Sheahan!
I have not heard the passion in all my life as I have with Luke in this particular song he used his Banjo like a rifle and his voice like a nuclear weapon
My grandparents were born in Ireland. I have never had the priviledge to go there but pray someday I will. I would love to visit my family there. My mom and dad went for 6 weeks and said it was the best thing they ever did. I just LOVE everything Irish. Guess my dear dad left me with that legacy.
They never had their sound together better than this. This is AMAZING. It's as good as it gets. Luke's vocal delivery is on top, top form, Barney's banjo purrs away beautifully, Sheahan's fiddle rides along majestically with the vocal, Ciaran's backing vocals fill the sound out and make the refrain gorgeous. Ronnie appears to be picking out the chords and keeping back out of the way - no less important to the overall sound than what anybody else is doing. 10/10 stuff. Brilliant.
Such is the magnitude of a voice is what you are hearing. That's why you get upset, Luke's voice can penetrate the very soul that occupies you and stirr emotion. Very few people can or have the ability to do that. God bless you.
+CirclingTheDrain john is the best bar none but this is a song not a melody but loves up to the people who love john as i think he is the best best bar none him and barney and then sean and then luke on the octapus jig, only bye the dubs
@@konstantineguruli And a nice guy. Back in the early 1960's my brother was working with Robbie Lynch, an early member of the group. As I was working at a photographic studio at the time I was hired to meet the lads in a pub off Grafton Street to take some publicity photos. All the lads were there except for Ronnie Drew who arrived late and in a foul mood. He walked in and yelled "We are breaking up the group!" So in the heel of the reel no photos were taken. John Sheahan drove me to my bus stop on O'Connell's Street and gave me some cash for my troubles. The rest is history.... Nice to be able to capture their music on UA-cam.
2017 with luke gone 33 years not even the best of singers even today even touch close to him, his headstone merely says, luke kelly dubliner, of such talent nothing more needs to be said, everyone remembers
Man, two people didn't lke this..they must be of English stock..Irish music doesn't get better than this..RIP Luke Kelly, my late Irish mas favorite traditional singer..Plus, he was a redhead..gotta love 'em..
My great-grandfather was from Killane and every time I hear this stirring folk song I think of him and the times he lived in. The Dubliners perform it with real passion and I see (at the time of writing) that this song has over half a million views,
That this amazing and powerful music could come from just 4 people is quite remarkable, given all the electrical accoutrements and crap bands seem to need today to produce not even a tenth of such a wonderful sound. Dubliners forever!
I was born in Enniscorthy and my grandfather was born in Killane. I have known this song all my life (over 50 years) and have heard many singers/bands perform it. Luke Kelly's version ( & the rst of The Dubliners) gives it power and passion and makes me proud to be a man from Wexford.
Saw the original Dubliners live about 3 or 4 times many years ago. Didn't want the shows to end, they were so good! One of the best ballad groups ever. Also liked the Wolfe Tones.
Excellent. Luke was a great artist and his blues/folk influences are to the fore here along with of course the Irish music too. This is an excellent example of the Irish contribution to music.
The rackards bobby billy and nicky all irish legends grew up in john kellys house in killane and luke sings about them another legend say no more words dont do these men justice, rip all 🙏🎤⚾☘️☘️☘️

This might come out wrong but I'm gunna say it anyway, I'm an American who was born long after luke was takin from this world and in no way would I have ever met him or have ever known anyone who did. Here's where it gets real. I can't wait for my judgement day to see the loved ones I've lost and hug there necks, but once that's all said and done I will meet this man not just because he was a great singer and song wrighter but because i feel like this man changed my life threw his music and his legend. I can not wait to meet this man someday

Stevie Ray Vaughn was unbelievable, never heard of him till I moved to USA in 2004_2008,was someone special! Ireland had Rory Gallagher who was Slash's idol...guys were born to play

Credit to the German TV technicians that allow us to enjoy this gem of a performance a good few decades later - I'm sure Luke and the boys would agree
It is so rare to hear a voice that is so powerful, so emotive, and so clearly delivered.

Luke was the greatest, We will never see the likes of him ever again.
Why do I always feel like crying when I hear Luke Kelly. His voice just gets me.

Just look at that lad . If I had a wish or two , it would be to sit and listen to him sing in person . My how he could command a room with his voice .
Sheehan on the fiddle at the start. Absolute bliss. Quite possibly my favourite sound in music.
