Lyrics:
I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most
And when he came to his true love's dwelling
He knelt down gently upon a stone
And through her window he's whispered lowly
Is my true love within at home?
Wake up, wake up love, it is thine own true lover
Wake up, wake up love, and let me in
For I am tired love and oh, so weary
And more than near drenched to the skin
She's raised her off her down soft pillow
She's raised her up and she's let him in
And they were locked in each others arms
Until that long night was past and gone
And when that long night was past and over
And when the small clouds began to grow
He's taken her hand and they've kissed and parted
Then he saddled and mounted and away did go
I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most

What a beautiful surprise I got this morning . I went into my 13 year old daughter's room to hear her listening to this song and listening to many more of Lukes song . Luke you'll never die even in today's messed up world . Power to you . R.I.P Legend .
This just made my morning 😊
Even at only 23 years of age, I'm glad I was brought up right. Sat on the counter top in the kitchen 10 or more years ago, listening to Luke, Liam and his brothers 🇮🇪🙏✝ I love My Home and My People.
That is so good to hear that the young generation are listening to real music
i worked on this! it was the first time the late late show allowed an artist to pre record a song! all knew this would be his last! his self chosen epitaph! it wasn't part of there normal set! its complicated lyrics had the band afraid that he might not remember the words! you can see it in their faces! he did it in one take! determined to the end! I'm glad i was there!
what an honour it must have been Tony, Don McLean said about Buddy Holly "the day the music died", i think for us it died when Luke left us,
Wow! Great post!
peter flynn Talk about hitting the nail on the head. Thank you friend.
this was the first song I heard of Luke's--sadly, only 5 years ago. I hope he knew how much he was appreciated and loved and how wonderful his music was. Would that I could have heard him in person.
Tony Byrne, just read ur post...must have been brilliant to have been in the same room as Luke Kelly...and what a song to hear him sing..health and peace to you!!
I am in tears. It is so heartbreaking and beautiful to witness how well Luke sang this, and the deep respect and love the other Dubliners had for him. Luke Kelly had the best voice I've ever heard. Rest in peace Luke, God bless you.
And thank you.❤

seen these dozens of times, Luke has the best voice ever in folk music, they were brilliant, he is why I started singing in folk clubs in the seventies because it's excellent music, my wife didn't like folk music now she's singing it all the time only after 60 years, God bless you Luke, RIP@jeffbird9846
Feb: 2020 who is still listening to the late great Luke KellY?
I'm always listening to his songs but specially this magical and his last song, my friend.
More than we'll ever know, I'm sure. Like the best of music, this performance is somehow both ephemeral and timeless.

Whenever the camera locks onto Ronnie you can see him miming the lyrics in case he needs to step in. Luke was so sick in this but still carried himself like the professional he was. They all knew it was the last time they would preform together, this makes me cry everytime I watch. Greatness can't be cloned. Luke will always be the voice of Dublin

I didn't know that and I already loved the song, along with all other dubliners stuff, now I will cry too.. @@cecilechantaloup9675 Yeah in the months before this Luke couldn't finish a song without forgetting the lyrics due to his brain tumor. His last ever performance and he remembers each word. His last goodbye in a sense.

I remember Luke sitting at our kitchen table and singing that very song, over 50 years ago, right here in New Hampshire. Ironically, some people insisted at the time that this song was about death and dying.

I had to go and learn more about this amazing singer... To my sorrow, I found out, that he had died some years before... But still, here we are, almost 30 years later, I still love Luke Kelly, and I can honestly say, that his voice helped me that night in the hospital....

The first time I watched Luke singing this, I was overcome with sorrow and could not stop weeping. To see such a vibrant, vital man nearing his end is never easy, but this one completely undid me. "I must away now, I can no longer tarry" he knew. RIP the Legendary Luke Kelly. The Voice of Ireland.
This is beautiful, but very sad to watch. Although he looks barely able to stay on his feet, that voice at its weakest still has more power and emotion in it than most other singers could summon at their peak. For someone with such colossal talent to die so young is a terrible loss. Given that he was extremely open to new influences, and a versatile talent, one can only imagine the great things he could still have done for many years to come.

The greatest Irish ballad singer of all time and the Dubliners no one will ever b as good as them again.
March 2020, I was 15 years old when I first listened to the Dubliners and now I am 66 years old . And still enjoying there music very much.
Just stumbled on this song by chance two days ago. To be honest, I just can’t stop listening to it. Never knew who Luke was nor heard any of his songs, but reading through all the comments, I conclude he was a true legend. RIP.
Ezekiel, Luke Kelly R.I.P. was an Irishman, the lead singer in the group of brilliant musicians the Dubliners. He was a very intelligent man and an amazing vocalist, you could listen to the cd Luke Kelly The Definitive Collection and listen to 'the Rocky Road to Dublin' and 'the Shoals of Herring' to hear how brilliant a singer he was. This particular clip on UA-cam is very moving because he had a brain tumour at the time. It was his last time singing in public. He died of the brain tumour. R.I.P.
I grew up listening to Luke Kelly and The Dubliners. He was a great singer but died so young. In Ireland long ago there would be barn dances with Irish music, singing and dancing and all the neighbours would gather. Irish people were not very rich and sometimes they would meet in the neighbours houses and party. I have some very happy memories of this and I learned a lot of Irish songs. Ireland has changed now because we keep our doors bolted at all times.
He sure was Ezekiel, and Thank You Sir for the kind words...A Legend Indeed.
I hope a year later Ezekiel you have had a lot of great times listening to more of Luke. He lives on and on and will never die
A year on I am glad to report that I have learnt to sing this song perfectly while playing my keyboard. Much as I tried to, I can’t replicate Luke’s great voice. He was a true legend. RIP Luke.
You can clearly see that Barney and Ronnie are tearing up inside during this . Such a poignant moment for this peerless group of musicians.

Nunquam Non Paratus - Shut up da fuck, U2 are great too. You can’t compare the two, they’re both great. I always see people shitting on U2 almost as if it’s cool to put them down. Iv'e seen this video hundreds of times and every time I see it, it gives me chills, just like the first time!! Oh, if we could only turn back the clock.
Je l'écoute régulièrement, avec beaucoup d'émotion, ainsi que Ronnie, Barney, etc...On n'oublie pas de tels musiciens et de telles voix !
I sang this one evening in Birmingham. I was sitting in an old pub listening to a local musician and when he was done, I borrowed his mandolin and sang this while he packed up his other equipment. Shortly afterwards a woman approached me to ask what the song was called. I told her and she explained she loved the song but hadn't heard it since the day Luke Kelly passed and she never got the name of it. She had forgotten about it until she heard me singing it. Three years later, I hope she still listens to it.
Heartbreaking to see Luke here, only a shadow of his former self. But his remarkable voice never left him till the end.
D Finest performance and song I’ve ever had d pleasure to listen to proud to b Irish 🇮🇪#beautiful all round🇮🇪🍀
An absolute legend of a man. RIP
It's as if fate itself wished for this to be his last performance." I must away now I can no longer tarry...".To me not only the lyrics of the song draw parallels to the future succeeding this performance, but the way in which Luke performs provides an aura or idea that he knew soon he would be elsewhere. That is why no other performance will pluck at the heartstrings of my soul... RIP Luke
+Matty Bhoy I believe the song was Lukes choice and that the dubliners all knew deep down that it would be his last performance, so he more than likely sang this song as a goodbye song
+Sally Andrews One look at Barney's face as he is singing, you know his heart is breaking in that moment, and one's heart breaks along with his. I can't watch this without being sad, but seeing Luke go out with such dignity is good. R.I.P. Luke, Ciaran, Barney and Ronnie.
+Matty Bhoy Their faces and body language (especially Luke's) are what gets me the most. While everyone is so sad, but keeping their focus on the performance, Luke is giving his best, as he always did. He's keeping his eyes closed most of the time and dancing and singing every word with emotion and power. This is how he wanted to be remembered. It's like you said, like there was an aura around him that kept the sadness away.
Seldom is a performance more beautiful than this :) simply because of the sheer emotion Luke poured into it. And those words, beautiful, and with that voice.... "For I am tired love, and oh so weary..." You can hear it, he was waiting to be guided to the next world :)
But, from what I hear the song is not about going away.
One of my big regrets - I never got to see Luke sing live. A legend.
I saw him twice - in England never spoke to him, only Barney, but he was a singing God to me.
He is so humle, thanking the crowd. They all love and and wish he would live for ever. ❤️❤️

This wasn't his last live performance. It was recorded in June of 1983, but not broadcast until December of 1983. He performed live between those dates, most notably on The Dubliners tour of Holland in late 83, which the Live In Carre album was recorded.
