      Leo is a genious who has a way of bullying people into doing something they should be doing anyway purely for their own good and nobody else's. I have been meditating on and off, and every time I listen to Leo, I question myself why I don't do it every single day. What excuses do I have? What the hell else on earth could possibly be more important than spending half an hour every day just being purely aware? He's right, it's way more satisfying than watching the telie or playing games. It's not fun or exciting or anything, it's just satisfying. It's like discovering a nice and quiet little room in your house that's always been there but you just never realised. That's how I feel about meditation.

    That was the key for me. When I began meditating years ago I at first was trying to control my thoughts. This would cause inner resistance and I quickly learned that observing the thoughts and bringing awareness into it was the key. Once I did that the thoughts would naturally begin to slow down. Within a week or two of meditating I was able to stop taking adderral and since then do not consider myself to have ADHD. Awareness is key. Great video Leo.

      My first try failed and my current attempt has not progressed until watching this video also I have taken meditating as 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes before sleep which is not as hard as I thought but the trick is for me to figure out myself how to be 'aware' of my thoughts.

      Aaron Doughty Great advice on the candle meditation video on curing ADHD. I've tried this technique, but I forget how if it any effect on my concentration. What I can say that I remember of though is that I find myself smiling and feeling high at some points throughout the day haha and I've beaten my sisters at Just Dance, which is quite uncommon, indicating that maybe my focus did improve?
      Anyways, telling you about this might help me be more motivated to do the technique on top of my breathing/simple awareness of thoughts meditation practice. Thanks so much Aaron!

       Marius Aleksandra, Meditation teaches you to be neutral and free, to find the point of balance and clear view inside of your mind. This point helps you to seperate your human consciousness from all the animal emotional garbage and social dellusions. When you find it, you can see the life, the existance as it is - senseless, nonsensical, unnecessary. Once you understand it and accept it - you don't need any excuses to live anymore. Everything becomes stupid and meaningless like a theatrical play and death just stops it.

      heather bullock why would u be late to work. Do it on break, do it after work. Do a little before work. U could even meditate while ur working using mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is just attention to the details of the present moment, at work it'll make u more productive. The excuses we make is just that, excuses. Your mind will come up with plenty of excuses not to do it, that's part of the hurtle. The more u do it the more ull want to do it so just make the hurtle.

    I am Muslim and love watching (most of) your videos. What I learnt from this video today is that:
    Meditation is about being AWARE, not stopping yourself from thinking.
    As a Muslim we make 'salah' 5 times a day, and each 'salah' can take about 5min. Salah is loosely translated as prayer, but it is much more than that. It's a set of rituals we do with meaningful postures, saying meaningful words as a way to connect to our Creator.
    I will use your technique to improve tge quality of my 'salah': practicing AWARENESS rather than focussing on stopping my mind from thinking (which has been impossible for me).
    A lot of what you share in your videos reminds me of advice given to us through the narrations of prophet Muhammad.

      I've been studying Islam and Sufism and Muhammad. Some good stuff there which I will discuss soon. But also a lot of dogma there. So you gotta be very selective.
      Ancient forms of Islamic & Christian prayer ARE essentially ritualized meditation.
      Fana al Fana is my favorite concept.

    Just wanted to say that I meditate for about half a year daily and I totally see myself changing quite a bit. Building a habit of 20+ minutes is really powerful because once you let yourself slack off and shut the timer sooner for whatever reason. It'll come back at you and kick your ass really hard. Every time you do that, it's like instant 50% willpower loss you'll have to slowly build up again. Be tough on yourself. Everytime you have one of the bad days, remind yourself that your only task is to sit there till the alarm goes on. When you feel it's hard, focus on breathing or on awareness or think of just about anything. Just carry on. It is worth the time and effort.

    This video changed my life

  • @Merthalophor
    @Merthalophor 7 років тому +69

    Here are my notes to quickly look over the content over this video, maybe someone can use them:
    Goal: To be "aware" as opposition to "think".
    What you do: You try to not stop manipulating yourself and just feel and think whatever your body wants to feel or think. Something hurts? Feel it. Thinking about sex? Think it. Try to not manipulate yourself. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Sit down 20 minutes every day. Try to not force what you think or feel. That's it. Nothing else.
    * Habit is key. Once for 20 minutes EVERY DAY, for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. Otherwise, meditation will not have an effect on you.
    * Some days will be good, some days will be very bad and feel like you just sat for 20 minutes instead of meditated. This is ok. During bad days you actually make more process than during good ones.
    *THE ONLY WAY to fuck meditation up is not meditate at all. As long as you sit for 20 minutes, you're doing it right.
    Benefits:
    * Get deep satisfaction from doing nothing and focus the most important parts of your life

    • @aadon94
      @aadon94 7 років тому +2

      During mindfulness meditation the goal is not to allow yourself to think whatever your mind or body wants to think...Surely it is to manipulate the attention and bring it back to the object of focus (breath, counting, mantra, etc.)

    From what I learned by practicing Karate for 2,5 yrs, I'm now 21 is that meditation is basically emptying the mind, cleansing the mind to give more space TO FOCUS optimally - for the actual session of whatever training you ought to be doing.
    Don't think about literally anything, what you will eat later or if your girl has texted you - ANY thoughts disrupts the inner peace of meditation. We have so many things to think about because everyday we are projected with "information" regarding false images of how life should be that we feel we must match.
    It's 2016 - but you can understand why monks stay in secluded areas near mountains, it is the ultimate meditation to become one with Life thus providing you with inner peace.
    Think about it, even time has been measured by someone and projected for us to follow, clocks etc - what if you drop everything and have a void mind.
    One last thing, meditation is not "shutting your eyes" - it's "cleansing your mind" because constantly we think about things and it might not always be healthy to have these thoughts in our head.
    Filter the trash and embrace the emptiness of your mind.
    Hope this helps, also great video Leo!

    Great to see this down to earth view of meditation.
    Human beings are rapidly moving toward creating an environment which will no longer sustain us. Learning to detach from ego through meditation is THE key.
    It's free, simple (maybe not easy!) and requires no religious or political affiliation. And, if you're evidence led like me, it's now backed by science! So, what are you waiting for???

    01/03/20:
    My first meditation practice. At first it came easy to be aware and after 5 minutes my thoughts instantly took over. I didn't fight them I let them be. I caught them mid sentence and I allowed them to carry out completely. When doing that I instantly fell into a "sleepy" state going back and forth between watching my thoughts and being aware of myself and my surroundings. The last 5 minutes where the most difficult for me. I snapped out of that sleepy state and time has never passed by slower. I lost awareness and my thoughts took over. Overall I'm happy for having this experience. I'm excited for my upcoming journey with meditation. Thanks Leo

    I actually got great inspiration from this video. At the moment i am watching it because I want to share it with my brother.
    I liked this video because of its honesty about the beginning of meditation.
    It is kind of hard at the beginning. But i got that "I can afford 20 minutes in day spend only on myself " because without conscious awareness about yourself for short time we are constantly interfering with environment around us.
    I just started to do this habit since mid January 2020. Had moment mid February that i missed 3-5 days, but i equalised meditateing 2 - 3 times (It just happened that i was so much in my own momentum enjoying day and next day i remembered that i forgot to meditate) following days. Around end of February and the beginning of March i started to meditate twice a day asap morning and shortly before sleep, but kind of i felt that i start 35 min. mornings and 25 min evenings.
    And yes Leo is right some days meditation was like 5 min but some days i thought when those 25 or 35 minutes are going to be over. My experience says meditation is like life no days are the same, but quite soon i noticed that every day after meditation i had peace for a while within me. I just felt calm and peaceful and it is amazing feeling when you for some time are aware and appreciative about everything. It's like nothing bothers me but i have clear and sharp mind.
    Have to admit that i used weed at the beginning (i meditated and got into great feeling vibrations letting them through my body) but really quickly i got thought "How it is to meditate without weed?" or "How it is to be aware on sober mind", "How i am going to see the world sober and aware of it". Life gave me chance and from the end of February weed supply disappeared from my life.
    Meditation at the beginning became kind of support and mostly was easy.
    Around mid May i realized that something is changing. I realized that i can replace thoughts. I realized that i can use breath to release excessive thinking. I realized that focusing on something with awareness allows me "not to be with thoughts. And around 1. of June i woke up one day and it felt like "from dream". I was aware of myself also ar metaphysical/spiritual being. That was my primary reason for meditation at the beginning.
    Meditation awakened my inner being/guide or other words i became aware that i am also non physical. That there is more of me than what i can see, taste, touch, smell and hear. I realized that i also feel. Feel vibration of my body.
    I understand that there are many factors involved (like 200-700 other videos on physiology of human like glands, spirituality or metaphysics, awakening and manifestation, spiritual nutrition etc.)in my story and i am just at the beginning of my journey but i got a "taste" of the freedom existing within me.
    I have been looking for freedom externally but apparently it's within us. We were born with it.
    I just applied consistent thought "I can afford 20 min a day Just and only for myself" all other times deal when it comes attitude.
    Thank you Leo for being
    Bless you
    💛💛💛

    @aliwashington8117 8 років тому +1

    Absolutly. It is really cool - you and I started our hard core meditation practices at exactly the same time. 3 years ago, in December I felt intuitively that I needed to step up my meditation game, and I dedicated myself to a 1 hour a day practice. And you are so so right when you say that first 6 months - 1 year are the hardest. I remember those early mornings in those early days feeling like I was in absolute HELL but at the same time I KNEW I had to keep going.
    3 years on, and I never would have expected to be where I am now with life. I think one of the things that people just are not aware of is exactly how MUCH awareness is going to come when you start down the meditation rabbit hole. I think lots of people subconsciously shy away from it, because as you get closer and closer to seeing reality for what it is, you totally lose your ability to hold onto victim stories, limiting beliefs, old negative habits - and I think with this awareness people get freaked out. You lose all ability to hold onto your old life, because the stories that you were using to justify that life no longer hold water. There is no way to dedicate your life to mediation and not have it WILDLY change everything. Not have it get to the point where you have to start taking responsibility for everything - and then beyond that.
    It is a gold mine, but at first with all the realizations of the TRUTH of your own mind and your own self being your own prison, it is intense.
    Awesome video Leo, as always, much appreciated.

    If 20mn is long for you, you can start with 10mn. 10 also seems enough to clear the mind a lot of times, slow down, and really settle in the present moment

    I have been meditating over the last 8 months, and men, it's so lovely. Sometimes, randomly when I walk, I get a shock of pure intense joy, peace and happiness. And the more I meditate, the more I get this indescribable feeling. It's nothing compared to the happiness you (temporary) get from a graduation ceremony or something similar to that. It's just, pure, peace and natural JOY.
    And I have been just meditating for 8 months, I can't imagine what it'll bring in the future :)

  • @mirzamay
    @mirzamay 7 років тому

    It isn't like this for everyone, I did a certain meditation and the first time I did it the racing thoughts stopped and never returned like that again. That was sahaj samadi, a very ancient form that some people believe was the first formal form. But it did little for me after that, whereas other types did better for me long term.
    For most people doing just a few minutes a day, or twenty minutes every two or three days of some type that works well for them is still extremely beneficial.
    I definitely wouldn't say it's going to suck for an entire year without discernable benefits, that's just one person's experience. Everyone's journey will be different.
    But I really like the majority of this advice, especially the explanation of how simple it is to just become aware. There is great power in that alone.
    This has inspired me to get back into meditation, and maybe be more consistent at it. But for me there's nothing that will guarantee failure more than to insist I must do it every day or it's useless and won't see any results for a year. I can't remember to brush my hair every day, I have difficulty sometimes with things that give me great results fast since there is such a limited amount of energy. Luckily, meditation isn't something that usually sucks energy, it's great for lifting it.
    But I have to be able to do it when I'm not in terrible pain or everything can be made worse, just depending on how that pain is affecting my state of mind. Illness issues. See...Everyone's journey is different.
    BTW I lived in Fairfield Iowa for many years, which is the meditation capital of the U.S., possibly of the world. Some people there do 7+ hours a day, which I think is quite over the top.
    I've seen a lot of different philosophies and types of meditation, extremes and mild, it's the epicenter of the science on meditation. I've never seen a description put quite so succinctly and effective as on this channel. If you forget the whole sucks for a year thing/can't miss a day it's quite inspiring.

    A few years ago i had some irl issues, i felt angry in such a way that i also felt lost. And i was sick of dealing with it and dealing with the people that caused it, it was rly profound never have i felt these feelings in such an intense and blinding way anger, betrayal, mocked at.
    My last resort was meditation (i was pretty meh about it since i saw it has mambo jumbo, but i decided to give it a go).
    And i felt nothing special at first but, but... after a long time of meditation routine and patience, i.... changed the anger was no more, replaced by understanding and peace with myself and others. And dispite me believing i was right in the argument, i felt for the first time that i could forgive the people that caused it and understand them wich i couldnt force myself to before.
    Its really hard to explain and it feels weird typing this, but i just felt like i never did before, the way i described it was...freedom, freedom of mind and control, it was almost magical. I neglected metidation when i got better due to lazyness, and maybe i should give it a go again since things arent to nice right now. But plz if u are reading this and are felling down in your life, give it a try it will change your life. I myself am going to try it again and im sure the results will be worth it, like they were before.

    I don't quite understand the "no manipulation" technique? If I let my mind do everything it wants, than how is meditation different from simple daydreaming? The technique which I have been trying to apply so far is to concentrate on something, let's say your breathing. Once you find yourself caught in s thought story, slowly release the thought and go back to observing your breath (or the chirping of the birds, flowing of water or whatever you are concentrating on). Is this type of meditation incorrect for a beginner?

    • @karabinjr
      @karabinjr 7 років тому +1

      when daydreaming you follow the thought and let the story unfold. you don't go there when meditating. I only meditated twice in my life, so don't take this as a deep advice.
      I am repeating what the dude said in this very video. Or in another one, there was another one on the same topic from him.

    • @ritalyu3043
      @ritalyu3043 6 років тому

      same question. It appears to me that the "no manipulation" technique is quite different from the technique Leo mensioned in the other video ( to clear thoughts). Manipulation happens when my mind chooses to let the thought go.

    I started using the app headspace, which really improved my consistency and results. It keeps you on track with your progress and some really informative information is given. Im not an affiliate or something, but the subscription is worth.
    They start out with 10 minutes, which works better than 20 minutes for me. Doing one month of 10 minutes a day will help you to build the habit to have longer sessions of 20 mins. Eventually you want to go even longer as Leo mentioned.
    What also helped me is seeing meditation not as a goal but more as a little habit that you carry with you, during the day. I have multiple mini meditation sessions during the day now, while driving, waiting, on the bus etc.

    Man, Leo, I really had this thing by the balls for awhile. I found a meditation center and have spent at least 2 hours a day meditating there through April and May for 6 days a week doing self-inquiry work. Then in mid-May, my meditation guide (who is enlightened) explained to me that they were shutting down the center down at the end of the month!! We had a small group meeting & everyone that attended was incredibly pissed off about it. The guide was also moving away to another center too far to visit regularly.
    One other lady who lives in town, said she would offer sessions at her home from 10am - 2pm, which I would never be able to make. However, I took last Friday off, texted her to see if I could attend & didn't get a response. So pretty much any efforts in town by these former students has fallen apart. The guide and the Austin guides who were visiting on the last few days said that I should travel to the Austin center (from Houston), but that's a long way to go & spend an entire weekend there (or longer). I might do it next month, but it's too far a drive to make that a regular thing. Lastly, they stated they would have another center in Houston, but not sure when it would return.
    My guide explained to me that meditating on my own would probably not work. She also said that whatever method I choose, I should stick with that one method only & not try different methods or build my own. She said to stick with one until enlightenment & actually told me that I'd be wasting my time meditating without a guide. She also stated that some meditation techniques would take longer than the one they use & she believed she could get me to enlightenment within 1-2 years with their method.
    Since the center has closed, my meditation habit has floundered & I don't know what to think. Sometimes when I try to meditate after coming home back from the gym & then trying to meditate, I just fall asleep. None of this would've happened if they didn't close down the goddamn center.
