The City receives approximately $140,000 annually in Transient Occupancy Tax revenues derived from a 6 percent tax on motel and other temporary lodging. The city allocates 25 percent of that amount for tourism promotion.
The City of Brookings recently-created Tourism Promotion Advisory Committee (TPAC). The TPAC is needed since the city and Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce have ended their joint tourism promotion effort.
This new advisory committee will review these proposals, and others, to develop a recommended strategy for the use of the city's tourism promotion dollars. Some of those ideas include working with Port of Brookings Harbor officials, creating short video clips and utilizing the Internet to entice both visitors and potential residents to the area, and focusing on the Rogue River Valley populations and travelers on Interstate 5 and Highway 101 to stop in Brookings.
