I see some listings of homes but, nothing in a newer style home. Is that generally whats available in Brookings? In the Brookings Harbor area you can grow lemons, limes, many varieties of bananas and over 50 varieties of Palm trees and Palm bushes Outside year round. It’s climate is truly unique to the Pacific Northwest. It truly is Oregon’s banana belt. The very Southern Oregon Coast is in zone #9 averaging 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the rest of the Oregon Coast. Also the unique condition called the Chetco effect (a condition causing a warm down slope wind) keeps Brookings climate milder on most days than the rest of the Pacific Northwest Coast.

Yes, it’s generally safe here. We do see some homeless and drifters especially in the downtown area and in Harbor (the southern unincorporated area of Brookings) but the residential neighborhoods are safe. We do get the occasional bears wandering into town but they are only a threat to our trash cans 😂

@@LivingOnTheOregonCoastWe have a couple of fast food places Ray’s is gone, and the best Fred Meyer’s I’ve ever been to in Oregon came in. ( two stories putting the clothes upstairs is the reason) I traveled over 1,000,000 miles all over the United States for business and 25 years. Brookings is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been in the United States. It’s extremely difficult to find a place to rent. People who retire don't do it to "spend their last days" somewhere. We aren't about to keel over. Retirees often have 30+ years to enjoy life and often good health. They want to choose a nice place where they can relax, enjoy life, and to use as a home base for travel. Retired does not equal "old."

Hi Jamie. Just returned to Sonoma Co from Smith River, CA, of course went up to Brookings. The greenbelt area was super hot last week.
I lived for 4 years in the area. Returning after a 10 year absence, its changed. A little more red neck than it was. I was surprised.

Your reference to that extreme temperature, that was the day that LA topped it and most of the California coast was that high. Other than that, I've been here over 20 years and, while I track the high and low each day, don't ever remember a day over 100 and only two or three days a year over 90. Same was with lows. One or two days below freezing. Most days in the winter are 40-55, summer 50-65. Kentfield, CA near where I lived for 26 years in San Anselmo, gets more rain annually than Brookings. It drizzles a lot during the fall and winter (now) here but accumulation isn't that great.
You missed the best Sushi north of San Francisco (Pacific Sushi), great Thai food, Mexican, Super Fly and Oxenfre are tops etc. Much better than Crescent City or up to Coast until you get to Newport except in Port Orford, Red Fish
From a County Perspective, we are the Wild Rivers Coast (100 miles encompassing 7 great rivers fishing, rafting, etc. and said to be the most beautiful coastline on the Pacific U.S. mainland.
Highways form I-5 to the coast. Brookings is as easy to get to from I-5 as any other highway between I-5 and 101. 126, 42, 38, etc. And it is an easy drive from Medford and Ashland via 199. Google will often send people looking for the shortest route from I-5 to Gold Beach on BLM roads which trap people in the winter, especially RVs and people die
Gas is about 80 cents a gallon cheaper from Crescent City, CA right across the border.
For Curry County, Prior to the pandemic, the only international windsurf competition on the West Coast was in Pistol River, OR, about half way between Brookings and Gold Beach.
Fred Meter IS NOT a Walmart. It's more like a Macy's for food and a pharmacy.

But the people i interacted with were terrible. I hope it's gotten better since then.

Brookings is not good for retiree’s or anyone with chronic health issues because the health care system is not adequate. They have an ER facility that is a level 5 trauma center which is the lowest rank. If you get a heart attack or stroke you have to be flown out to Medford which is three hours away or possibly Portland which is the ONLY Level 1 trauma center in the state. One nurse told me they lost patients because the helicopter wasn’t cleared for take off due to the fog. If you have a chronic illness like diabetes your going to have to travel 3 hours to Medford to see an endocrinologist and hopefully you won’t get pounded by a big redwood on the 199. I literally almost got hit by a huge tree on that road! Price of living is horrible unless your rich because it’s a tourist town! If your a warm weather person skip this place because 7 months out of the year is wet, cloudy and miserable. Definitely not a good place to live unless your middle aged, married and in good health.
