Post American World from Dystopia is also the Phantom Lord.
Similarly, the descending tail on the main riff of The Punishment Due follows a similar pattern. It's a descending major third riff moving from G to E, just with the high e and b thrown in. I would be surprised if it's also a reworking of the same concept
You can really hear Dave in these riffs, they all scream his style. When you take them out of the context of the Metallica songs they all sound like Megadeth riffs.

Always said the reason the first few albums was so popular is because Dave was a major part of writing them
@@nikkicartee879 He wasn't though, the first album he wrote less than half and he only wrote 2 riffs on the second. On an album of over 50 riffs this is nothing. The reason those albums are so good is because of James Kirk and cliff

@@imagereflection4826 I would disagree. He’s only credited for the songs your talking about. But if you’ve ever been in a band, you might have, you know that a member like Dave influences the other members a lot. This isn’t to discredit Kirk.
The breakdown in Phantom Lord straight up sounds like a Megadeth song. But being honest Dave's fingerprints are all over Kill 'Em All. At least they gave him writing credits in the liner notes.
They had to. The demos had Dave credited so he could have used that as evidence if they tried to shaft him.

@@1refi it's not uncommon for bands at all to use old archived riffs on their albums. Hell EVH used riff tapes from the 80's on their 2012 album. Plus it was 2 albums not 3 and the 2nd one was basically a single riff and an intro.

I never knew these riffs were Dave's but now that I know, it's totally unmistakable. They all sound like grade-A Mustaine riffs.
Yep! I remember the days of reading the CD covers and lyrics from to back and seeing "written by Dave Mustaine" on several songs.

@@goodini026 Well it's tough, most were collaborations and therefore belong to the band. He had.the right to use the riffs that he wrote and Incorporate them into Megadeth songs and he did. But the songs belong to Metallica

The average viewer of Joe Rogan's massive audience would walk away from that clip with the impression that Dave wrote most of those songs, which was exactly his intention in the way he said it lol. When the reality is that he wrote around around a half-dozen (very cool) riffs, which he went on to work in to Megadeth songs anyway.
Fun fact : The Call of ctulu riff written by Dave Mustaine is actually used agian in the opening of Hangar 18

Dave, the almighty *Lord Of The Riffs,* the chord progression in "The Call Of Cthulhu" is used again in "Hangar 18", taken to a whole different level.
A lot of people who don't really know about music only point at Dave's voice, of course he's not on James' league... But James and Kirk can only DREAM about the guitar work that has been done in Megadeth.
As much as I love a lot of Metallica's post-Dave riffs, they rarely have any of the exotic flavor that a lot of Dave's riffs have.
I feel that Dave is a more impressive singer. His vocals are quite unique. I suspect it took many years of experimenting before he got it down. You could say’s it’s semi-singing or something. On the other hand, James really made the most of the voice he has. So, I guess both men are extremely accomplished in their own way.

I guess part of it was that he wanted those songs to use for whatever post-Metallica career he attempted, but once they put them on Kill Em All, he really was back at square one

Meh. All the Megadeth songs that incorporated whatever riffs were also present on Kill 'Em All or Ride the Lightning ended up being way better. Mechanix has better energy than The Four Horsemen, which is really the most important element of these early-era albums. I certainly know which crowd I would've rather been in back in those days.
Flash Forward a few years and Hangar 18 absolutely shits all over The Call of Ktulu; you know what's more bitchin' than a band trying to write some "epic", mysterious-sounding track that is kind of beyond their abilities to actually do well? Hearing Marty Friedman rip off numerous solos that all have the sickness dialed up to 11.

After hearing all these riffs played back to back you can really tell they were written by Dave especially songs like Jump in the Fire. There’s that frantic quality to the Jump in the Fire riff that screams Dave Mustaine.

Ride The Lightning is my favorite Metallica song of all time and when I found out Dave had helped write it I was like oh that makes sense
Lepper Messiah is also Mustaine's. It was a song called a The Hills Run Red. And, while I can't prove it, I'm almost certain Mustaine has some writing credit in Damage, Inc.
Neither of these are true, leper Messiah has a vaguely similar chord progression on the bridge and that's it and damage inc has absolutely nothing to do with Dave. In fact Kirk wrote a few riffs on that song and you can tell

It's funny, he actually wrote hangar 18 very similarly to call of ktulu. Anyone that can play the hangar 18 intro will know what I'm talking g about. Cool that he saved those chords for another song

I love Megadeth especially the first five albums. But Metallica slowing down Mechanix into The Four Horsemen was one change I felt made the song way better.

Metallicas lyrics about the tour horsemen and the fact they played the galloping type riff at 2 minutes more times is why i like their version a little more. Mechanix sounds better but it was shorter and the lyrics didnt hit like Metallicas

I think metal militia sounds the most like Dave’s style but these are all terrific riffs.
I never really listened to much of the early early Metallica stuff...but I've heard bits and pieces of these songs over the years. But like the guy below me said, taken out of context, you can DEFINITELY tell these are Dave's riffs. They're oozing his type of riff writing and it's pretty obvious.
He used the exact same chord progression from Call of Ktulu in Hanger 18 intro. Fun to play around with..

The only ones I really liked are four horseman and ride the lightning. The second riff in ride The lightning you played is probably one of my favorite riffs of all. Time. I am still glad they gave him the boot.
Dave's riffs are some of the most distinctive riffs in existence. You can immediately tell the ones that ge wrote.
Dave actually wrote all of the music for phantom lord and metal militia as well as call of chtulu

@@Voyvoda1903 No call of ktulu has 11 riffs on the song and Dave wrote 1 and part of another. The song was a collaboration between James, cliff and Dave it also has a great lead melody written by kirk
@@imagereflection4826 the entire intro of the song is the bulk of the song. Hangar 18 and the song When by Megadeth features these chord patterns and progressions. Lars even said that Mustaine was the main songwriter of Ktulu.

The fourth riff which is played a lot of James then it goes back to Daves etc then back to riffs James wrote. Kirk wrote those great melody leads and obviously the solo. It is very collaborative and is wrong to say he wrote the whole song. Dave even said he was proud to have his riff on such an epic musical piece

James and Lars always made sure he got paid his royalties and songwriting credits from Kill 'Em All and even gave him a songwriting credit on Ride the Lightning even though I've seen him say in an interview that he didn't contribute much to Ride the Lightning.

Iirc Dave wrote for Metal Militia the riff immediately after the one you played. I'm not sure he wrote the latter or Ride The Lighting's main riff for that matter.

There probably would have been far less of it, that's for sure. I can't imagine Dave and Lars **wouldn't** have been butting heads the whole time; I think you'd be exceedingly lucky to get three albums out of that lineup.
Remove mustaine and I think metallica would have been twice as good. RIP Cliff. Cliff arguably brought more musicality to the band and he was easier to get along with.

They are very good riffs, but if Dave was still there for Ride the Lightning and MOP it just wouldn’t have been the same. And most of those riffs were Kill Em All riffs so Dave was there when they made those songs. U can’t rly say they “stole” those

@@idirdavid874 Like I said, he's credited on the songs he wrote and receives royalties. Dave wasn't even a member of Metallica for a full year, James, Lars were together in 81', you think they didn't write a single song until Dave showed up?
I mean, none of us were there so who REALLY knows. But it's public information that Mustaine gets $500k per year from Metallica for touring royalties because they play songs live that he's credited with writing. It's also public record that Mustaine has received $4 million + in royalties from record sales or KeA and RTL. Not bad for only being in a band for 11 months, and only writing on their 6th and 9th best selling albums.
Ellifson has even said that Mustaine didn't get ripped off by Metallica. Ellifson and Lars remained friends the whole time, so I'm sure he was privy to a lot of conversations. Lars even went to Megadeth shows to support them.
In the end, the difference in money that Mustaine would be making if he were credited on every song on Kill em All is a drop in the hat compared to what he's already earned from Metallica and what he already earns from Megadeth royalties, its simply not worth it to either party to care about it at this point. It would be the equivalent of you getting bent out of shape because your buddy owes you $20 from a few years ago.

some of the stuff you're playing is incorrect, my friend. don't take it the wrong way.
just to point out a few:
1) the downward chromatic riff in Ride The Lightning is played using Dave's spider chord method (he shows this himself)
2) in Call of Ktulu, the last note in measure 57 right before going into measure 58, is an open high E string, not a high A
Dave's stuff was always the best. After Cliffs contributions were gone that band was finished

Yes metallica was finished after Dave left. But according to the financial report, when he left they all dirt poor and now they all have more than 100 mils each but Dave claims recently he has to sell his gears to pay off debt. You must be very good accountant.

@Mirror Image James was a singer first, he doodled on guitar whilst Dave was in the band as lead guitarist. Dave's playing absolutely rubbed off on hetfield, and Dave was impressed by how much he improved, which gave James confidence to play guitar as well as sing. Both Dave and James have told this story already. Guess your to butt hurt to believe, but facts don't care about your feelings boy.

James had been playing guitar for 6 years before he met Dave had written 3 metallica songs before he met Dave and they even had a release of one of those songs before he met Dave.
James has said many times that he wanted for a time to be like Sean Harris and that singer/guitarists were unusual in metal but he still wrote on guitar and played at rehearsals. After a few shows and a failed try out with a second guitarist he went back on to guitar with vocals.
James had his style before he met Dave and in fact If Dave hadnt met Lars and his huge knowledge of a plethora of underground European proto thrash bands then Dave's style wouldn't exist.
So there's your history lesson and stop projecting it's cringe.

Wtf 😂 everything you said is false, Dave Mustaine was listening heavy stuff before he joined and Lars hired him cuz they share the same knowledge of bands, and he knew a lot of bands they liked. But his style was a lot more thrashy that’s why they kept telling him to slow down stuff, you’re dumb.
I think what people need to keep in mind is that these riffs were written in conjunction with a group collaboration (band). These riffs were a product of what they all worked on together. Ideas that bounced off 3 other people and morphed into the final product.

no, its been stated as fact from lars of all people that most of these riffs were brought to metallica by dave from his time in panic... in fact, he even showed james how to riff. So stuff it.

He has mentioned writing some riffs from 'Leper Messiah' in interviews. Not sure which ones though...

For the record, it does sound very Megadeth, especially when they play it live. However, he never sued the band or went for writing credit, which is suspect. If he really wrote the riff, why didn't he go for credit?

I mean, if you've ever listened to Hangar 18 you should have realized that the opening riff is basically the same as Call of Ktulu when looking strictly at the chords being used.
