From what i found David Gates is the one who made the sample for the beat. The song being sampled is called "Baby I'm a Want You", and its by the Fatback band, but it's writing credits are given David Gates. I would imagine that's why he also gets credit on Mathematics. I'm sure Mos Def wrote all the lyrics.
