      Probably not a coincidence either. I feel like the 80s and 90s were a time when the idealism of the previous couple decades fell away and the myth of racial progress came crumbling down. Feelings of frustration and cynism make for good music. In that way 90s hip hop kind of mirrors the way punk music came about in the 80s as a response to Thatcher.

    It's amazing how American Rap scene is so in sync with Eastern European history.
    80s - chill and friendly even in horrific situations
    90s - all about being ruthless towards each other
    00s - about finally having some money but losing some authenticity with that
    10s - about having it good but still kind of coasting on that 90s bad boy pretence when the world has completely changed (and the authenticity is nowhere to be found)

      rappers dont seem to take the same pride in their lyricism anymore. I like the melodic shit thats popular now but they should also have something to say it and execute well. There are exceptions but in general they rap about lean, getting their dick sucked, being in the club, getting money and other hedonist stuff. It can hit hard but when it lacks substance when there’s nothing else. JID, Lupe, Kendrick, Denzel and Cole put effort into their craft though, out of the new gen guys

    • @tonyp1376
      @tonyp1376 2 місяці тому +2

      Agreed. 90s *mainstream* hip hop was the best era of *mainstream* hip hop but in the 00s there were TONS of artists who were influenced by those 90s cats that were impeccable MCs, unfortunately they were all relegated to the underground as the mainstream was taken over by outside interests who saw the profitability of hip hop and pushed artists who were the most marketable as opposed to the most lyrical.
      For example, I grew up in Boston, Id put the underground hip hop scene here from about 2006 to 2011 up against anyone. TONS of great hip hop music, MCs and producers were doing their thing here at that time. They just got no love from major labels or turned them down because they were better off independent or signing to a minor label. I suspect that there were dope underground scenes all over the country, and even the world, at that time that didn't get anywhere near the recognition they deserved.
