It's been 20 years since the release of Mos Def's debut album Black On Both Sides - renamed Yasiin Bey. The underground hip-hop icon is reaffirming his presence with a new album and a brand new performance at the Culturebox Festival 2021. In 1999, Mos Def won over the critics with his first album, marked by his political acuity and an inexhaustible groove. In 2012, he abandoned his pseudonym in favour of his baptismal name, rewritten with two 'i's, more melodious. Like a more mature version of himself, the artist wanted to venture out as a committed intellectual into the world of art and performance. Recognisable by his elegant flow and engaging lyrics, Yasiin Bey is now releasing Negus, his fourth album, and embarking on the anniversary tour of the classic Black On Both Sides. Describing himself as a citizen of the world, the artist travels from New York to London, from Paris to Cape Town. In the midst of his travels, music has never really left him. He is now back on stage at the Culturebox Festival to celebrate his legendary album with us.
