I helped an old lady move from Detroit to San Diego, and I moved her belongings, personally, in a uHaul, by myself. When I got to SD, I did not know what to expect. Never been to California, or anywhere in the west prior. I was gobsmacked the moment I got to SD. The beauty was beyond breathtaking. From Midwest to Far West.
Then, she invited me to stay at her place in La Jolla. I said, "Sure!" I did not know it was the wealthiest city in SD, until I started noticing patterns like, LOTS of Tesla's, and residents were sharing with me the value of their homes, and I saw fancy boutiques and restaurants.
It took a month for me to catch on, "This place is SWIMMING with money!" Just the ambiance, amenities, atmosphere. La Jolla is almost TOO perfect of a place to live IF...and this is a BIIIIG "IF"...you can afford it.
I learned after 6 months living there, I needed a career that would allow me to continue living there, because working a normal "job" wasn't cutting it. Most workers bussed into La Jolla and left to live further away from the shore. There is a clear "Haves" and "Have Nots", situation. However, the average worker/employee were generally very happy to work in aroung the wealthy they serviced. From my experience, the wealthy of La Jolla are incredibly friendly, happy-go-lucky, generous and kind.
I'd walk home from a brutal day of work landscaping, and some random guy outside his home would offer me popcorn, food and drinks. Don't know me Adam from Eve. Just smiling, snacking on popcorn, and offering me a bag lol. Another invited me to a house party he was hosting with some friends. Another guy saw me in Carls Jr. (my new favorite restaurant to this day!), and paid for my entire meal when he knew I couldn't afford to get what I wanted on the menu.
I just had the best of time, and now, I'm seeing, I didn't see and explore enough! There's so much I thought I explored but didn't! Now, in 3 months, I'm heading back, with a LOT more money and time to check out all of those places I didn't see or visit.
Lastly, it's funny how you left out the best nude beach lol. As a young man, I enjoyed that beach for it's "view" lol, and met a lot of beautiful, friendly women and really cool guys.
Damn, I miss San Diego so much lol.

I lived in San Diego for 11 years. Moved there for college when I was 18. Went to UCSD and worked at Scripps Inst of Oceanography for 4 years after college. I got scuba certified at La Jolla Shores, and spent many summers kayaking and snorkeling in La Jolla (shores, cove & in the caves). I would always bring friends there, as well as inside the cave from that tunnel that was featured. I lived in Pacific Beach and would drive over Soledad Mountain on my way to college/UCSD. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 8 years now, and watching this video was so nostalgic. It is very well made! Thank you 😊
Ah, and loved Windnsea as well! Would always bring friends and guys I was dating there 😉 it’s like a hidden European/Mediterranean beach right in San Diego.

I can't believe I came across this video. Back in the late 70s and early 80s, I lived in La Jolla. From this video I see that it's changed a lot. I lived up by Torrey Pines (5:35), and we used to go there to watch the hang gliders and surfers. I worked at the La Jolla Light, the weekly newspaper there. My husband and I used to go to La Jolla Shores beach (3:16). Thanks for this video. It brought back lots of memories.

I got my license when I turned 16 and we drove down to La Jolla with my parents till this day I call it The Jolla. It's a running joke that my mom and I share. I have.
I photographed a Schindler place near Wind and Sea. I shot a Ken Kellogg house too. I still want to play Torrey Pines. It is one of my favorite places. It can be a little stuck in the 80's as far as architecture but I love it.

When I was going to UCSD in 1978-1980, I used to go snorkeling off LA Jolla Cove, swimming out to the first bouy. LA Jolla used to be so exclusive but it has turned into trinket shops and touristy traps. Used to go to the restaurants down on lower Prospect but it's just over runned now. Used to ride my bike from UCSD down to LA Jolla and ride back but now it is so co vested it's just dangerous now. Used to ride my bike north to Torrey Pines to Del Mar. Since UCSD is right off Blacks Beqch, used to go there and climbed down the cliffs to boogie board and run along the shore. I was in good shape back then so I carried my 10 speed down the cliffs on the goat trails to ride on the shoreline then climb back up carrying my 10 speed. Used to see a Cadillac rolling around with "Dr. SEUSS" on the license plate. It was Theodore Gisele, creator of Dr. SEUSS books. But too much congestion and too many people.used to go to the asalk Institute hoping to bump I to Dr. Jonas Salk. He was like God, strolling along Eden, as he discovered the polio vaccine.
I think the best days have past.

@@Voyagerhq i’ve lived in San Diego. My entire life and all of San Diego has changed not just La Jolla. I lived at the beaches in my younger days ski Beach Mission Beach Crownpoint, Blacks Beach La Jolla Shores Silver Strand. I was all over the place, even Coronado. I even went to dog Beach a few times with my pets I loved Belmont Park. In my younger days San Diego is not the same. Not just La Jolla. It’s over populated. But they still have some very new and up-and-coming communities that are not overrun yet like Eastlake Escondido and Encinitas la Jolla Shores is a very nice beach, but San Diego is a very sunny city. All the beaches here are over populated especially on holidays.

Don't mean to scare people or bring any bad news, but La Jolla could be a huge landslide into the sea from the cliffside looking towards the sea.
I do hope there are checks into the stability of the land around the cliffsides and where instability is showing on the edges. Perhaps places we cannot see from above, but only underneath it all.

La Jolla in Spanish does not mean the Jewel even if it's a beautiful place. La Jolla means entrance of water smaller than a bay of bahia (in Spanish) La Joya to mean the Jewel is written with a y. Not a lot of people know that. But of course if you're a San Diegan you will say it's a Jewel because it's a beautiful place.

    • @Voyagerhq
      @Voyagerhq  Рік тому +9

Interesting, Many sources say it means “The Jewel” yet the definition you provide also makes a lot of sense. I’ve read the Kumeyaay called the area “Matlahuayl” meaning place of the caves and the Spanish may have adapted the word to match your description of entrance of water. Since the caves are submerged in water it would make sense. Thank you for your insight!

La Joya. The Jewel 💎. It's just use the double L phonetically, instead of the Y. That's definitely Spanish language, either way. A small inlet bay, "Cayo", or a cove, "Cala". Their way and Spain's way. La Jolla.

La Jolla is far older than the 1800s. Some of our ancestors go back 30,000 years here or more. San Diego has some human artifacts going back possibly 130,000 years. Oh yeah. Do not appear to be or act like a seal. Great whites might mistake you for one. The cliff collapses at Blacks beach were fantastic, if you haven't seen them. 'Contemporary art' Can you say 'money laundering'? Jonas Salk saved untold millions of lives. A true American hero. Mt Soledad is indeed a breathtaking view. Too bad godbots had to piss on it with that execution device that ignores all of the Jews, Muslims, atheists and others who sacrificed their lives for our country in WW2.

You forgot; Smoke weed, drive around Mount Soledad, look for iconic homes with small front doors, swear you saw the midgets from The Wizard of Oz. I date myself perhaps. (Surf Blacks, and reefs as well)

Too bad that the street vendors have taken up much of the parking and crowded out the sidewalks so much that it's hard to visit the beach areas in La Jolla.

I disagree. You’re mistaken. It is not hard to visit beaches in La Jolla because of vendors at all. They do not occupy any significant portion of any street or parking.

@@jimas9775 he’s lying. I literally live here currently. Vendors rarely impede day to day or visiting beaches. Parking is a general problem at any popular spot in San Diego.

@@JMVideos7676 yeah that’s for the entire San Diego because in other places it is a true problem. But not much in LJ. It would be inconsistent to say “oh these laws apply to everywhere except LJ”.

Parking is reasonable and only difficult during the busiest times. The best part is that parking is free just about anywhere you go!
