I remember those days, she was called boring and sad and her gymnastics was not spectacular ... Ok, she did not smile, but she had a fantastic execution, not so many gymnasts have this level of excellence, it is nice to see her again in a video :)
@@GymnasticsSavesLives Yes the second flip on the double lay got wonky, but that 1.5 pirouette was better than a lot of the top bar workers today can do.
Her routines were designed around the new code of points at the time. Certain connections and leaps. Her stoned face only made her routines boring. Although I do think she had more potential but she just followed orders for her coaches glory for their government. I think that's why she never looked like she had any personality.
Maybe not the most flashy, maybe not the most artistic, but she was consistent, as tough as nails, and did some difficult moves on the power events. And she deserves some credit for relative longevity.
Very powerful and tough gymnast. Not as elegant as Simona Amanar who I also loved watching in the 1990s, but on vault, as well as floor, Gina was formidable.
@@PeirsolFan2 First you have no evidence to prove, second abusive coaches work in some sports, I watch volleyball too, and I often saw the coach screaming and yelling at his athletes during breaks in competition, sometimes people need to get scolded or punished to realize the problem, but that's not the case for everyone, and, personally, I'm not too fond of it, but it does work for some athletes
Great video Thanks. I personally think Gina was a great gymnast - she had a lot of difficulty in her routines and made it look easy because of her fantastically reliable execution. She was always knocked because of her serious look and lack of facial expression but that was just the way she was! Her stoicism was admirable. Gina was one of the greats for sure!
I'm so grateful to you for all these routines from Atlanta, my first and favorite Olympics🙏 I remember how I always appreciated Gina Gogean despite her lack of artistry and beauty. I think her humble attitude was a lesson to me. Besides, her floor music is really beautiful.
you can always count on Gina to hit routines after routines. She does not give away deductions. Just look at the full-in dismount on that floor routine.
Some of the highlights -- That AMAZING 1.5 pirouette on TOP of the bar. That STUCK double back from two back handsprings off beam. A STUCK full-in at the end of the routine.
If you compare her routines to likes of Shannon Miller, Henrietta Onodi, or Lilia Podkopayeva, I wouldn't call her unforgettable, but she was consistent, i'll give you that. And she worked the code very well in the 90s.
Romania was outrageously overscored during the 90’s and Gina was one of the many gymnasts who were benefited from that. However we can’t deny how consistent and hardworking she was and IMO those were the main reasons why she had great results throughout her career
She and her coaches played the CoP very well I'd say. They understood it and took advantage of it. Had just enough difficulty and made it up with beautiful executions to win.
Under the 1993-1996 COP, an acrobatic series of at least two elements was required. However, unlike the current COP, a salto was not required to be part of the acrobatic series. Gogean’s back handspring step out + back handspring to two feet portion of her dismount series fulfilled the requirement at the time.
Like others have said . She worked the code of points extremely well , taking advantage of some quirks in it . Most noticeable to me on beam . The 92 routine of Gutsu was much more difficult
😂At the 4:00 mark you can hear coach Steve Nunno saying “…Shannon, come on now”. I’d rather watch Shannon Miller any day. Not knocking Gogean’s consistency.
She was very exciting in the early 90s with some stunning skills on each event but by 96 and 97 she was completely forgettable. In this AA final against the likes of Podkopayeva, Mo, Kochetkova, Khorkina, Miller, Dawes and etc I didn't even notice she was there. Heck, even Milo and Amanar had more presence. But in the end her consistency paid off!
Sadly these performances WERE Forgettable in 1996. Overshadowed by GREAT USA performances but even by Gina's standards from her earlier years these were some of her MOST stock routines. I first saw her in 89 and thru 1992 she was a VERY exciting gymnast with HIGH difficulty on ALL events. Hard vault, crazy combo's on bars at Euro 92, full beam difficulty and full in in some cases off it to boot, and MAD paced choreo with FAST combo whip thru to combo's on floor. But after 92 the only thing that remained of interest were her EXTREME cat-like stick landings that impressed me and her flare, but everything else had been lost unfortunately. Others her age increased they difficulty like Shannon etc but Gina seemed to go the other route even if it still spoke to the code it was to basic and I lost interest.
USA great performances?? Apart from Shannon, USA had atrocious form on most of their skills with bent knees, flexed feet, cowboyed summersaults, crossed legs on twisting skills, lack of amplitude on many of their skills and etc. just to name a few. Luckily, during that era, the scores didn't reflect those obvious problems at all. Whereas the Chinese were the ones that really stood out. They had immaculate form and execution but unfortunately it didn't give them any advantage in terms of scoring. They did much more difficult leaps that got credited exactly the same as the much easier US leaps for instance.
@@BlankFormatted when the routines are easy, OF COURSE THE GYMNAST WILL BE CONSISTENT…. She had no E skills on bars or beam and ONLY one salto on beam, so it’s hard to classify her as a great all-around gymnast.
Wow! I’m surprised that her floor music was הבאנו שלום עליכם (Hebrew folklore). Always nice to hear it. Were any of the romanian coaches/ choreographers Jewish?
There's nothing wrong with being a more serious/composed performer, which is what Gina was. It's a shame the 97 beam final is what people think about when they hear her name.
@@liliansmeenge3297 No. She won over several competitors who had much harder routines (Kui YuanYuan being the stand out). After that many thought she was overrated and the "boring performer" discord became larger.
@@floralgem I definitely don't think she should've won that day, but with the perfect 10 system, Kui indeed had more visible errors. It's a shame that she wasn't born in the open ended code era, she was so ahead of her time
@@mht4908 Yeah sadly the wobble on the layout full probably did her in. This is also an example of something people show others why open ended scoring is superior.
