Did you catch Nadia carrying the Olympic torch at the Paris 2024 opening ceremony alongside legends like Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams? What a spectacular show that was!
What did you think of the ceremony? Is there anything in particular you're looking forward to in these Olympics?

Yes I watched it and to see her my mind went to 1976 when I watched her on our TV in Tehran Iran and three years later my family and I left Iran in 1979 after radical Islamists occupied my ancestral homeland to this day. It was sort of different that she’s old and I am old and we both live in US. As a little girl she was my idol and that summer of 1976 I tried to do her moves on our Persian carpet. 🥰

Nadia is a popular culture ICON! She's emblazoned in a lot of our childhood memories. Her achievements remain unsurpassed because of the historical and political context. She catapulted to fame without social media and lucrative endorsements, like current champions. Also, the equipment has changed drastically. Today's gymnastics is very acrobatic.
Nadia was always very down to earth and authentic. She didn't rely on theatrics or an Instagram post about her relationships, to captivate people. Her gymnastics was fascinating and she was intriguing!

You do realize that we are all watching & discussing Nadia right now ON SOCIAL MEDIA?! And this is a different era. EVERYONE'S lives were more private back then. Now everyone & their brother is OVERSHARING, & often presenting a facade of their life. And people are watching it! Apparently everyone has hollow, shallow, boring lives. All this shit would stop if companies weren't making money from it! Plus, the English-speaking world today loves to tear people down, gossip, make accusations, spread conspiracy theories, etc. If you are a young person who is NOT on social media, people are going to be sus. Something like 50% of young people want to be "influencers". Also, it's not just young people who are "attention whores"; it's disgusting how parents use their kids on social media for their own narcissistic purposes. There are so many things to condemn online that someone posting about their relationships, unless they are trashing other people, seems pretty innocent. Of course, IDK to whom or what you are referring because, while I have an Insta account, that's only so I can comment on something I might discover from following a link. I've never posted anything & rarely am ever on the site. YT is pretty much the only social media I use & I'm on here every day, but I don't follow celebrities. I'm curious about ideas & learning, not gossip or drama, so I don't seek that stuff out.

Now, I know she is one of the most bravest and determined Woman in Gymnastics that ever lived. I cannot express how happy I am to see her have the freedom that so escaped her when she was young. She is a role model for every Woman in our Country. All I ever wanted was to see her happy and smiling. She has finally obtained that happiness and I applaud her! As a free spirit flying on those uneven bars like a wild bird, it's no surprise she flew towards freedom. A 14 year old girl from a country hardly anyone had ever heard of. A country that was reeling with political strife and immense difficulties. Yet with everything against her she scored seven 10s in gymnastic. Something unheard of.
When she finished her uneven bars routine they waited. The scoreboard read 1.0. Her trainer Bela Karoli went to the judges to to inquire the scire. People were flabbergasted. "That was a perfect routine!" The programmers of the scoreboard did not include a 10 since they thought no one would achieve such perfection so they stopped at 9.99 But they conceded that it was a 10. A perfect score even if the scoreboard could not show it. Nadya went on to achieve some seven 10s. Something ubheard of for a 14 year old from a country hardly anyone knew.
Nadya is history. No one can repeat her mastery, bravery and perseverance.

@@paulbutler1873 Simone Biles was most likely a junior elite at 14. Comparing Comaneci and Biles is a rather pointless effort.
The rules of elite gymnastics had changed by the time Simone Biles became a senior competitor. While young women before about the 90s could compete as senior elites at 14, the rules changed to a 16 minimum for senior elite and international competition.
Most likely though, Simone was a junior elite. The rules have changed so international senior competitors are older, and the revamped scoring system discourages artistic creativity in favor of athletic difficulty, but I still believe it's crass to diss the younger generation of gymnasts.
Ms. Comaneci had more of an artistic grace and peaked early--yet by 22 was burned out and retired. There are several athletes still competing into the 20s and beyond, even after marriage and motherhood, and I think that's great!
Have a great rest of your night.

This documentary shows us how olympic gymnastics in the late 20th century was essentially a second cold war, with prestige and soft power as the main prize. Károly's defection to the US was very interesting to know about, and I had no clue that Comaneci defected to Hungary before taking asylum in America. Truly, she has lived through a very difficult early life, and she deserves all of the peace and privacy that she wishes for. Her famous olympic scores may have been 10s, but I think she deserves 10+ for her shere strength to continue on throughout very difficult times.

These comments are disgusting…the last thing Nadia would want is to talk down about another amazing gymnast just to prop her up. Very unsportsmanlike and toxic. She would never.

I like Nadia, Olga, Ludmilla, and most of the 1960s through early 1980s gymnasts. Gymnastics lost its artistics in the early 1990s to now. I still like the mens gymnastics.

@@SLICE_Who not really. I stopped watching years ago because the beauty of it is gone. The female gymnasts are robotic, non ballet and non choreographed in the beam and floor. The Uneven Bars seem like 10 miles apart. Vault is a weird looking contraption. Again 195Os to late 1980s was the great eras for artistic gymnastics. Today its robotic more stress on extreme difficulty.

Simon Biles is amazing, but she doesn’t look smile or walks like Nadia. Nadia’s personality and forced smiled made her iconic. She was only 14 and her amazing routines were perfection - and not to mention not over stepping on landing- and all that perfection under a dictator and war. that made her the most graceful gymnastic of all times. She gave pony tales and wrists bands a meaning. All 80s girls us wanted to be Nadia

Bad rumors say ..some sports are not a good business 😢😢😢well, what a painful emptiness without them, let's get back that sweet feeling instead. During the Cold War, the Communist regime wanted to care of sports education in schools, it was a good decision, everybody let them kids enjoy sports education because you never know, only training kids surface the big champions, this gorgeous Nadia's story is the prove, athlets are like artists, they have a unique gift, a natural talent out of ordinary that must be exploited. If there's no chance for training, it's a huge loss for everybody.. for all countries and for all schools world wide 😢😢😢

Nowadays the press MAKES superstar athletes.....

This documentary is helping us understand, gymnastic competitions are made for young girls ... from 12 to 16 years old, when they turn 18 they are already big heavy and ..out of shape, the career is over when other athlets just begin to shine, 18 years old. Nadia is a very Romanian kind of creature, such hard worker, discipline is her main nature, the strong sense of duty but patriotism as well, for her pride any sacrifice is worthy, any sacrifice for her people, that's what we call...very hearty ones, their hearts beat only for the pride to belong a certain nation, something all sports champions should feel, having the double speed and motive to break the limits, it's a feeling that becomes a human value beyond any job, later on, it's a great feeling I love a lot and I could never give up on

No muscular sausage packed modern gymnast today can ever outshine this authentically demure and elegant first ever perfect 10.
Her skills were masterful and a work-of-art. She did not need a heavily padded thick mat unlike what gymnasts use today.
Gymnastics now is plain boring even with their quintuplet spins and mile high jumps.

the perfect 10 scoring system ended in 2006 now there's a difficulty score and an execution score and the Vaults are averaged so say a Gymnast does a Yurchenko double pike with perfect landing the top score they could get would be 16.4 and a Cheng Difficulty 6.0 with execution out of 9.9
