  • I created this video because I think there are a lot of people out there that would love to make this style of quilt but have no idea how. I say that because I was the same way! I loved this quilt style but had no idea how to do it. So I hope this video gives you good instruction and details on the whole process.
This video took me a total of 2 weeks to make because I can only work on the quilt in the evening after work. The entire making of this quilt took me just under three weeks (I didn't film myself making the quilt back, the quilt sandwich, the quilting process, or adding the binding).
If you would like to jump to a specific part in the process, please use the list below.
    Processing the shirts - 0:39
    How to process shorts/pants - 10:29
How to process button down shirts - 18:38
Ironing and stabilizing the shirts - 26:33
How to use a t-shirt press instead of an iron - 51:40
Measuring & cutting out the quilt blocks - 57:45
How to measure and cut blocks with circle logos - 1:20:07
How to handle logos that don't have enough fabric - 1:33:58
Designing the quilt top - 1:43:37
Filling in gaps in the quilt top design - 1:50:20
Sewing the blocks together - 1:58:47

Carol, my husband was killed in a car accident last year. He had lots of T-shirt’s and I knew I wanted to do something with them. I had never made a quilt before but I watched your video over and over many times. I would get one step done and then watch the next step. I also studied other videos but yours was definitely the major one that got me started and kept me going. I just wanted to thank you for your detailed instructions. I was able to do it and I think it turned out good and something I will always cherish. I would not have been able to do it without you, so thanks again. Pam from Illinois. I wish I could post a picture, but not sure how or if that’s possible.

I have a bag of football and rugby that my late husband wore, perhaps I should do the same, I don’t think my son will ever wear them, but he’d probably like a quilt. Fabulous tutorial.

Carol, Thank you SO much for your tutorial videos! When my daughter and son-in-law moved to Europe, they were limited in what they could take. They asked me to make them each a t-shirt quilt out of their collection of sentimental t-shirts they had kept from childhood, college, sports teams, etc. I had only basic sewing knowledge and a very old and basic sewing machine. I found your video, watched it all the way through, took notes, and referred back to it multiple times. It took me a year to make both quilts but I did it! I also got myself a nice new sewing machine in the process. I had documented my progress and made each of them a little booklet of how their quilt was made. I also made them each a storage bag. They both love their quilts! Your video gave me the confidence to tackle something I didn't think I could do. You are such a wonderful teacher! My next quilt will be one for my husband who is a huge UGA football fan. Peggy D.

Oh my gosh Peggy, that's so awesome!! I'm so glad I was able to help you make these wonderful gifts for your family! :D And making the booklet for how their quilt was made is such a great idea! I might have to add that for my client quilts! I'm sure they will love and treasure their quilts forever! I'm sure you're a pro at them now. Usually by the end of the first quilt everyone has a good rhythm and flow going. If I can help with any future projects, or if you ever need a longarmer, I'll be here! ;)

How can I thank you! My other half died last year to the day and then I watched your video...you have given me inspiration to do the same with all of his T-shirts so that I can have a cuddle with him again! I can't thank you enough. I'm sure he would approve of his shirts being used this way, so thanks xxx
I would also like to state how very well you delivered such a difficult topic that even I could understand. You have lifted my soul as I shall be closer to him now; many, many thanks.xxx

You can make anything you want if you put your mind to it. I made some many of my children's quilts by hand until I got the hang of it by using the machine. Once you get started, you don't want to quilt. My mama never used a machine, she made everything she and some of children wanted was all made by hand. you can do it

I’m watching your video again for a refresher course. After doing tons of research, watching UA-cam videos, and reading several books about making t-shirt quilts yours is hands down the best! About two years ago I made 2 out of my daughter’s sorority tees. They both turned out great! Getting ready to make 3 for the grandkids out of their Papi’s Harley tees. Thanks so much for the great instructions. Wanted to mention I hung a vinyl table cloth with a fuzzy back on the wall with 3M hooks to lay my blocks out. I’m too old to be crawling around on the floor 😂.

Your instruction is so detailed it really leaves no doubt about what to do. Thanks for taking the time to be so detailed as it has made this, what I thought was a complicated quilt, seem relatively easy. I'm going to tackle this same design for a friend's daughter and a less nervous about being able to pull it off than I was before viewing your video. I am not a beginner quilter but have not done a random size quilt before so, again, thanks!

That's great to hear! I really tried to include all the info that I needed when I first started. Hahaha. It really can be easy if you take your time. The hardest part is the cutting. So long as you cut correctly, the rest is a breeze. If you mess up a seam, you just rip it out and try again. Hahaha. I'm sure you'll do great! If you're a quilter already, the measurements should be a piece of cake! :D Good luck!

You're very welcome! I'm glad I'm able to help. I always tell people, if you're nervous about messing up, go to Goodwill or hit some yard sales and buy several shirts for cheap. Make a quilt, from start to finish, using those shirts! By the time you're done, you'll have worked out all the kinks on the measuring, cutting, sewing, etc. If you mess up, no biggie because those shirts have no meaning to you. And then you can always donate the quilt!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It has been 10 years since I quilted. This is the best step-by-step refresher and 100% the best tutorial for a collage style quilt. Is it long? Yes, but that's the beauty of it! Please ignore comments about "you could say less." or you say this or that phrase too much. This way is much more like you are in my living room talking me through it and it's perfect. I started and finished (yesterday) my college son's collage quilt that has shirts from preschool to high school. It was the best quarantine project and he loves it! Thanks for taking the time to do your videos.

Wow! Thank you! We recently purchased a new RV and I thought it would be neat to use t-shirts collected from our years of Cub and Boy Scouting with our 2 sons. I had saved the fronts/backs of t-shirts in a box when we moved. I thought to hire someone to do it, until I was reminded that I sew, I make quilts, clothes, etc. The puzzle design was what I wanted, but the random corners intimidated me. Your video took every bit of the mystery out of how to organize myself and how to sew it all together. I'm a tech geek, so I laid out my quilt using an Excel spreadsheet. I've pieced together my border strip and now ready to tackle connecting all my shirts and filler fabrics. I'm sure I will refer to this as I go. Your detailed instructions were exactly what I needed to take the leap. Thank you again and again!

I am a nurse and I decided to hand sew at the beginning of Covid so that I could cope mentally. This was the first video I watched. I liked the idea of a quilt with different sized blocks because this was my very first sewing project and I knew I couldn’t cope with the conventional quilting. I made a storybook/photo/memory quilt and used your 4” method. My blocks worked perfectly because they were different sizes. Because we had very strict lockdowns in Australia I had lots of time. The quilt turned out to be queen sized and it took two years, 100% hand sewn and quilted. I have just taken it to South Africa. I came looking for you as I now want to make a quilt with my son’s ‘gangsta’ hoodie. Hopefully I will not take two years lol. Thank you so much for this video.

Send pics when it's completed as I'd love to see it! Good luck and thanks for watching!

Stitches can be taken out and fixed, cuts cannot be undone though. If you're worried about using their shirts for the first quilt, swing by a garage sale, or a goodwill and get several tshirts from there. You'll be able to practice but it won't be on shirts that have meaning. :)

I am almost done sewing together the t-shirt blocks for a quilt. I watched this video from Carol and used her method of cutting the blocks from multiples of 4. I am so excited! They are going together so smooth and all have matched perfectly. One note would be to not forget to add the 1/4" to each side, have a very sharp rotary knife, a cutting mat and the rulers like Carol shows in her video. I have blocks that are cut: 4 1/2", 8 1/2", 12 1/2", 16 1/2", 20 1/2". Thank you Carol for making this so much easier for all of us!

That's great! I'm glad everything is working out. That makes the project so much more enjoyable! :D Oh yes, seam allowance is important. But should you happen to start cutting and forget the seam allowance, no worries! Just keep cutting the blocks the same way, with no seam allowance, and they will still line up perfectly. The only down side is all the blocks will be a half in smaller then you originally planned. :) You're very welcome, and thank you for watching!

Just wanted to make a small point here. The content is not what makes a fabric stretchy. There are plenty of fabrics that are 100% cotton that are not stretchy: sheets, dish cloths, button up shirts, etc. What makes them stretchy is whether they are knit or woven. Rarely is a woven fabric stretchy (unless it is woven with elasticized thread) but knit is always stretchy no matter what the knit is made of. Many years ago double knit was all the rage. It was made of polyester and had plenty of stretch. Love your video. I am about to try this for the first time which is how I came to find your channel. Keep up the good work.

Just wanted to say thank you for producing such a good tutorial. I have saved tee-shirts for over 40 years knowing that one day I would make them into a quilt. Needless-to-say I was scared to start cutting them, but your instructions were so clear that I ventured ahead. I am so happy with the results. Thanks again.

    A great tutorial!
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. I have a lot of T-shirts that I've collected over the years that mean something to me; usually a particular event or trip. I've been wanting to find someone to make me a quilt out of them and decided to watch a UA-cam video to see how many I needed. Your's was the first video I watched. You inspired me! I decided that after a little practice with my wife's sewing machine, I'm going to create another memory and make the quilt myself!
Thanks again for taking the time to show us all the hints and tricks so be successful with this project.

Thank you! And thanks for watching! What a great idea! Doing it yourself will make it that much more meaningful! :D Here's another tip before you start. Go to Goodwill or some yard sales and buy some tshirts. Use them to do a practice quilt, from start to finish. Doing a practice one first, on shirts your don't care if you ruin or not, will prepare you for the real deal. Then, once you're done, you can donate the quilt! A win win for everyone. :D I hope this helps and good luck on your project!

This is such an excellent tutorial! I’ve done a collage t-shirt quilt, large like this, for my youngest son out of his concert t-shirts. I also did the “Y” seams, and made those sharp intersections (b/c I’m an avid quilter)! As a retired educator, I want to compliment you on your thorough and well-paced instructions. They were impressive! I’ve had many requests to make t-shirt quilts, but I save all this work for only my family! I have another t-shirt quilt started for my first born son, and then I’m sure the bags of t-shirts will start coming in next for my grandchildren. Meanwhile, I’m still quilting and longarming quilts! Thank you for posting this to help all the people who would like to make a t-shirt quilt! 😉

OMG! I wish I had found this video before I started working on my first tshirt quilt. My client wanted a collage so I just cut the logos as big as I could and then started piecing. BIG mistake!! I was over 1/2 through when I realized it was not going to workout so I started making adjustments to the remaining blocks and had to use many 'filler strips' to get things to line up. I still have a few seams to go before it will be done but clearly I could've benefited from your excellent instructions and demonstration ...oy... I'll know better for next time!! Thank You for taking the time to do this video!!

Since yoh make so many tshirt quilts, have you evef considered getting some plexiglass (what your rulers are made of) made in several sizes in incrementz of 4"?
    Such as 4x4" square, 8x8" square, 12x12" square & 16x16" square.
You can mark the center and inch markings on them with a permanent marker.
I did this & it saves so much time.

You have created the most comprehensive and easy to understand quilting video that I have ever watched! Thank you so much for taking the time to make and post it for all to see! Several people at church have asked me to make them a t-shirt quilt for their kids to take to college with them, but I never had the nerve to take their precious mementos and start cutting them up! This video answered many questions I've had for a very long time about making this type of quilt. I just wondered why you didn't use a quilting square to cut out some of your pieces. I really like that you used increments of 4" as your standard measurement multiple. Thanks for the tip abut the coupon!!

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  8 років тому +2

Wonderful! Well honestly, shirts have logos that are some many different sizes, I think I would need several squares to be able to always use one to cut out the logo. And it could change if I change the standard measurement as well. So, I just find it easier to use my two rulers. :D But you could totally use a quilt square for a simple style quilt where all the blocks are the same size. I did that over the weekend actually. I had been given shirts that were already roughly cut and I squared them all down to 10.5 x 10.5 using my square ruler. It was super easy. :D you are very welcome. I'm always glad for those coupons. :D

Thank you SO much for this video! This is exactly what I needed. (The two Craftsy tshirt classes I bought were no help at all). Your cutting demo on how to center the image was perfect.
I am trying to make a lap size/twin size quilt, but virtually all of my tshirts measure 12 x 16 long. I do have the tshirt backs and logos. Do you have any suggestions for how to lay this out?

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  7 років тому

You're very welcome! Thank you for watching. :) I'm sorry to hear that! I've often wondered what the classes contained but never wanted to pay for them to find out. For lap size, I usually go with 60x60. You could do 5 across by 4 down and it would finish about 60x64. You could also go 5 across and 5 down and it would finish 60x80. That would make it a very large lap quilt. For a twin, I would go 6 across and 6 down and it would finish about 72x96. That's assuming all your blocks are 12x16 inches.
