- The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is set to classify aspartame, a widely used artificial sweetener, as a possible carcinogen. After years of conflicting research, the IARC is expected to make the declaration on July 14. Aspartame, which is 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, is commonly found in low-calorie food and beverages such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi. Despite containing calories, it is used in smaller amounts due to its high sweetness. Stay tuned for the latest updates on this important classification.

My favorite soft drink is water. When you are thirsty, it tastes absolutely delicious.
Absolutely agree.
Now even water in the US isn’t safe.
Yep. Water is the most amazing drink ever. Nothing comes even close.
you can trust any industry as much as any politician or any banker
As long as maximum profit is the motive, that will always remain true.
So with that logic, you shouldn’t trust anything this doctor is saying 😂
Keep to water - be safe
I remember back in 1981 or 1982 my dad's friend came over with a couple packets of aspartame. He worked on developing it and wanted us to try it. We were so amazed at how much like sugar it tasted. Back then we just assumed things were safe or they wouldn't put them in the market.
I read about aspartame toxicity back in the 1980s. I also heard that the person in the FDA who approved it, then went on to work for the people that made aspartame for a multi million dollar salary. 🤔
Donald Rumsfeld was CEO of the company that made Aspartame prior to being in Reagan's cabinet.
I read the papers too when I entered Medical School, and it was believed to be a carcinogenic since then. It was Rumsfeld who was CEO of the company that made aspartame, and the day after he got appointed by Reagan into his cabinet we heard it was approved. The FDA has a history of deep corruption for decades.

He drank 2l diet Pepsi everyday. This actually scared me out
My friend died from kidney cancer three years ago. He used to go through six to eight cans of diet Coke a day. That got me over my addiction to the stuff. Frightening.
Maybe he should drink 42. Because nobody will drink 21 cans a day. Only the ones that has minus 21 brain cell like you tho
I need to make some changes! Thanks for sharing! Im addicted to soda/pop. My parents even put it in my bottle as a child. Long term addiction. I’m only on diet now but clearly that’s not that much better
My friend used to drink between six to eight cans of diet, Coke a day. He’s was completely addicted to it. He passed away three years ago with cancer of the kidneys. I stopped drinking the stuff when he was first diagnosed, I was drinking three or four cans a day. It’s just not worth the risk.
Try find a drink that doesn't have these sweetness in the UK...same for yoghurts. My sister had suffered a really bad cough and a annoying need to keep clear her throat, which I know would drive her colleagues mad, she was like this for over 15 years, her saliva was thick . Since stopping have products with aspartame it just vanished. I really can't believe that for all these years of suffering so bad it was down to sweeteners .
Natural yogurt contains no sweetners. By the way its shocking how aspartame did that - glad your sister found a solution in cutting it out ❤

I’d like to point out a few things. First, the direct action of releasing insulin is for the body to turn sugar in the blood into fat. Insulin is a hormone, and that is its primary purpose. So the result of gaining weight coming from behavior that causes the release insulin should be viewed as expected.
Second, I think at this point that we have more than enough scientific measurement about the problematic consequences of sugary drinks to at least advise that their consumption is definitively linked with negative health outcomes. Just the overall psychological dynamic of acquiring joy from eating/drinking sugar is behavioral activity that is adverse to health outcomes.
You would have to drink 36 cans of Diet Coke every day for decades!
Who's crazy for avoiding artificial sweeteners for 30 years NOW???
i probably drink a diet coke once a month. otherwise i drink water and home brewed tea with organic monkfruit extract.

What doesn’t cause cancer these days :/
In California, everything causes cancer. It's advertised on almost all forms of matter in the state.
Thank you doctor as I was growing my mother would give me soda on my birthday parties. I remember hating the taste but because the other children would drink coca cola I would drink as well without liking it. Now that I am a mother I have never given any type of soda to my children. And glad that I did. Now that the children have grown up they are staying away from it ❤🇬🇷

Excellent!
“Ate their regular diet” sounds like a good control of calorie intake. 🤯
I've been drinking cans of diet cola pretty much everyday since the 1990s. Not overweight.
There's a reason anecdotes aren't used.
How's your insulin level and A1C? Even thin people can become diabetic.
Never drink diet coke or soda, even rarely to drink regular coke! As I eliminate or no consumption of sugars in my diet...Less oil and salt as well...!😅
So let me guess Diet Coke will switch to Sucralose??? Ugh!! I just suppose it's time to quit drinking artificially sweetened drinks. It really should have been time when 12-packs were being sold for $8.99
Sucralose is claimed to disrupt DNA in humans now.

They said the same thing about low fat sweets many years ago. The texture of the fat substitutes tricks your body into thinking it was full fat. I don’t know if this study has held up over the years. In the 80’s everyone went to low or non fat everything. Now everyone likes full “good” fat keto. 🙃
monk fruit and stevia is where it's at.

According to my continuous blood gucose meter adding milk to my coffee raises my blood glucose. After going up, my BG goes down. I have been taught that rising BG causes release of Insulin. I can only conclude that consuming milk causes insulin release. Drinks sweetened with stevia, erythritol, saccharine, or aspartame do not have this effect ON ME. ???? I will continue to test.
That's the reason they always recommend processed milk products like cheese etc for diabetes instead of milk.
Sugar is deadly too.
I wish the cola companies would simply make a soda with LESS SUGAR. Is it really that difficult? Use real sugar but less. Ikea has an excellent fountain cola with less sugar and it's much more refreshing. Come on folks, it's not rocket science!

Aspartame actually makes my throat get a bit inflamed. I can drink an occasional Coke zero but if I have two my throat will bug me for days.
I also bought an artificial liquid sweetener thing for coffee once. I put two drops in my coffee and I swear it almost destroyed my throat.

Best of all, I feel better than ever. Don't miss my addiction at all. There is nothing good to be gained from drinking soda, diet or not. All it does is harm the body. My personal opinion is that the stuff should be banned.

Dr. Hansen, you don't have to drink diet coke/pepsi, etc.

Mike, what Mic are you using in the video?
I get tons of aspartame in my nicotine lozenges… 😬🙄 It’s my only vice. Along with working too much, not having time for exercise or sleep, so the nicotine helped power me through the workday. Geez - can’t have any vices anymore. Sigh.
This thinking is so backwards. Artificial sweeteners don’t have to cause cancer; those people who tend to consume diet soda in large quantities make enough other poor choices that complete the total cancer risk. People who tend to drink diet sodas often use them as a means to avoid calories. Many people think of diet soda as free or offsetting impact of other foods. Chances are, they are not making better choices in other parts of their lives…diet, exercise, self care, stress reduction, sleep. They’ll drink a diet soda while eating a double cheeseburger with large fries (fried in a processed seed oil) from a fast food place and think “I’ve just saved myself 100 calories.” They’ll do this five to seven days a week and expect no consequences.
These studies are focused on artificial sweetener consumption and the incidence of cancer among populations. They’re not considering the consumer mindset and the full context of life choices of those who tend to consume lots of diet soda. There are too many variables and no financial benefit to a manufacturer.
There are no shortcuts to health without consequences -whether it’s Wegovy, Ozempic, gastric sleeve or diet beverages. You have to change the way you think about beverages and food and make purposeful choices. If there is a big corporate interest in consuming a popular food or beverage that is manufactured, a person who wants better health should avoid these.
There are health benefits to many unprocessed foods that are bland and bitter. Yes, I eat Brussels sprouts and broccoli without drowning them in a sauce. Corporate America wants to sell them to you, but processed and packaged with a sauce that was created in a lab by a scientist solely for sensory stimulation-not for health.
A 60 y/o attorney i worked for died from brain cancer, she kept CASES of diet coke under her desk....CASES, not 6packs, CASES. she otherwise appeared very healthy.

It's all correlative rather than causal as usual. The dose makes the poison as usual. Huge quantities of many things can cause disease/illness. I really hate these poorly done studies with low confidence conclusions.
True, but I'd rather have some of the data instead of being kept completely in the dark. It's up to each one of us to decide what to do with what we have.

Is Sucralose fine? I recently switched to a sucralose based low calorie sweetner.
There is research it was bad if heated over about 120°C (ie. okay in tea/coffee, but not cooking).
It does seem to spike insulin, so potentially has the same problem as aspartame? Worth studying.
@@erwark I only drink it with tea and that too very less but I'm thinking of switching to stevia as it's natural.
I’ve switched over to unsweetened iced tea, partly based upon your reports. I don’t care if my drinks taste _sweet_ ; I just want them to taste _something_ !
Sometimes I drink limeade very-lightly sweetened (i.e., still pretty sour) with sucralose. By that I mean actual, pure sucralose, not Splenda, which is 95% sugar and has the same number of calories as sugar - no kidding; look up the ingredient list!
All the reports I’ve seen pretty much agree with what you’re saying here: “just don’t overdo the aspartame.” 3-4 cans a day, no cancer risk, but a dozen or more per day, you’re pushing you luck a bit.
Can you explain how release of insulin without presence of glucose would continue to weight gain? What's the physiology of that?
I think because insulin makes you hungry
